Do not be
deceived:

cannot be

A man reaps

to please their
flesh,

the flesh will

destruction;

become weary
in doing good,

for at the proper time

a harvest

if we do not

The word

that
came
to Jeremiah

from
the Lord,
saying,

 “Stand
in the gate
of the Lord’s
house,

and

proclaim
there

this word,

and say,

‘Hear
the word of
the Lord,

all you
of *Judah

who
enter in
at these gates

to
worship
the Lord!’ ”

Thus
says the Lord of
hosts,

the God
of *Israel:

“Amend

your
ways

and
your
doings,

and

I
will
cause you

to
dwell
in this place.

4

Do not trust
in these lying
words,

saying,

‘The temple
of the Lord,

the temple
of the Lord,

the temple of
the Lord

are
these.’

 “For if you
thoroughly

amend

your ways

and
your doings,

if
you
thoroughly

execute

judgment

between
a man and
his neighbor,

6

if you
do not oppress
the stranger,

the fatherless,

and
the widow,

and

do not shed
innocent
blood

in
this place,

or
walk after

other

gods

to
your

hurt,

7

then
I will cause
you

to
dwell
in this place,

in
the land

that
I gave to
your fathers

forever and ever.

 “Behold,

trust in

lying  words

that
cannot
profit.

Will you

steal,

murder,

commit
adultery,

swear
falsely,

burn incense
to Baal,

and walk
after other
gods

you do not
know,

and then

come
and
stand

before
Me

in
this house

which
is called
by My name,

and say,

‘We are
delivered

to do
all these

abominations’?

11

Has
this house,
which is called
by My name,

become

a den

of

thieves

in
your eyes?

Behold,

I,

have seen it,”

 “But
go now

to
My place
which was in
Shiloh,

where

set
My name
at the first,

and see

what
I did to it

because
of the wickedness
of My people

you have done
all these works,”

says

“and

you,

rising up
early

and
speaking,

but

did not

hear,

and
I called
you,

I will do
to the house
which is called
by My name,

to this place

cast you out of
My sight,

cast out
all your brethren—

posterity of
Ephraim.

 “Therefore

do not pray
for this people,

nor
lift up
a cry or prayer
for them,

nor

make
intercession
to Me;

for
I will not
hear you.

Do you
not see
what they do

in
the cities of
Judah

and
in the streets
of Jerusalem?

18

The children
gather wood,

the fathers
kindle the fire,

and
the women
knead dough,

to make
cakes

for
the queen
of heaven;

and

they
pour out
drink offerings

to other
gods,

that

they
may provoke
Me

to anger.

19

Do they
provoke
Me

to anger?”

says the Lord.

“Do they not
provoke
themselves,

to
the shame of
their own
faces?”

Therefore

thus
says the Lord
God:

“Behold,

My
anger

and
My fury

will be
poured out

on
this place—

on man
and on beast,

on the trees
of the field

and
on the fruit
of the ground.

And
it will burn

and
not be
quenched.”

Thus

says the Lord
of hosts,

the God of
*Israel: “

Add
your burnt
offerings

to your
sacrifices
and eat meat.

For
I did not
speak

to
your fathers,

or
command
them

in the day
that I brought them
out of the land
of Egypt,

concerning
burnt offerings or
sacrifices.

what I commanded
them,

saying,

‘Obey

My voice,

and

will be

your God,

My people.

did not

obey

incline
their ear,

followed
the counsels

the  dictates

evil hearts,

came out of the land

to you

all My servants

the prophets,

daily
rising up

them.

Yet

obey

Me

or

incline

their ear,

stiffened
their neck.

did worse
than their fathers.

 “Therefore

shall speak
all these words
to them,

but

will not
obey you.

shall also call
to them,

but

a nation

Oh,
that my head
were a spring of
water

and
my eyes
a fountain of
tears!

I
would
weep

day
and night

for
the slain of
my people.

Oh,
that I had
in the desert

a lodging place
for travelers,

so that
I might leave
my people

and
go away
from them;

for
they are all
adulterers,

a crowd of
unfaithful
people.

“They
make ready
their tongue

like a bow,
to shoot
lies;

it
is not
by truth

that
they triumph
in the land.

They
go from one sin
to another;

they
do not
acknowledge
me,”

declares
the Lord.

“Beware
of your friends;

do not
trust anyone
in your
clan.

For
every one
of them
is

a deceiver,

and
every friend

a slanderer.

Friend

deceives

friend,

and

no one
speaks
the truth.

They
have taught
their tongues
to lie;

they
weary

desolate

“I will make
Jerusalem a heap
of ruins,

jackals;

waste the towns
of Judah

so no one
can live there.”

Who
is wise enough
to understand
this?

Who
has been
instructed

by
the Lord

and
can explain it?

Why
has the land been
ruined

and
laid waste
like a desert

that
no one can
cross?

The Lord said,

“It is
because

they have
forsaken my
law,

which
I set before
them;

they
have not
obeyed me

or followed
my law.

14

Instead,

they have
followed

the
stubbornness

of
their
hearts;

they
have followed
the Baals,

as their ancestors
taught them.” 

15

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
Almighty,

the
God of
Israel, says:

“See,

I will make
this people eat
bitter food

and

drink
poisoned
water. 

16

I will scatter
them

among
nations

that
neither they

nor
their ancestors
have known,

and

I will
pursue them
with the sword

until
I have made
an end of them.”

This is
what the Lord

says:

“Consider now!

Call for
the wailing women
to come;

send
for the most skillful
of them.

Let them
come quickly
and wail over us

till
our eyes
overflow with
tears

and water

our eyelids.

The sound of
wailing is heard
from Zion:

‘How ruined
we are!

How great is
our shame!

must leave
our land

because
our houses are

Now,
you women,

hear
the word of
the Lord;

open
your ears

the words
of his mouth.

Teach
your daughters
how to wail;

one another
a lament.

Death has
climbed in through
our windows

and
has entered
our fortresses;

it has
removed
the children from

the young men
from the public
squares.

Say,

“This is
what the Lord
declares:

“‘Dead bodies
will lie  like dung
on the open field,

cut grain
behind the reaper,

no one
to gather them.’”

“Let not

wise boast

of
their
wisdom

or

the
strong boast

of
their
strength

 or

the rich
boast

their
riches,

but

let

who boasts

boast
about this:

  that they have
the understanding
to know
me,

  justice

righteousness

earth,

are coming,”

Warnings From Israel’s History

5 :1

“Go
up and down
the streets of
Jerusalem,

look around
and consider,

search
through her
squares.

If
you can
find but one
person

who
deals
honestly

and
seeks
the truth,

I
will
forgive
this city.

2

Although
they say,

‘As
surely as
the Lord lives,’

still
they are
swearing

falsely.”

3

Lord,

do not
your eyes look
for truth?

You
struck
them,

but

they
felt no pain;

you
crushed
them,

but

they
refused
correction.

They
made their
faces harder than
stone

and

refused

to
repent.

4

I thought,

“These are
only the poor;

they
are foolish,

for they
do not know
the way of the
Lord,

the
requirements
of their

God.

5

So
I will
go to the leaders

and
speak to
them;

surely
they know
the way of the
Lord,

the

requirements
of their
God.”

But
with one
accord

they
too had broken
off the yoke

and
torn off
the bonds.

6

Therefore

a lion
from the forest
will attack
them,

a wolf
from the desert
will ravage
them,

a leopard
will lie in wait
near their
towns

to
tear to
pieces any who
venture out,

for their
rebellion is
great

and
their
backslidings
many.

7

“Why
should I
forgive you?

Your
children
have forsaken
me

and
sworn by
gods

that
are not
gods.

I
supplied
all their needs,

yet

they
committed
adultery

and
thronged
to the houses of
prostitutes.

8

They
are well-fed,
lusty stallions,

each
neighing for
another man’s
wife.

9

Should I not
punish them for
this?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should I not
avenge myself
on such a nation
as this?

10

“Go
through
her vineyards
and ravage them,

but
do not destroy
them

completely.

Strip off
her branches,

for
these people
do not belong
to

the Lord.

11

The people
of Israel and the people
of Judah    have been
utterly unfaithful
to me,”

declares
the Lord.

12

They
have lied
about the Lord;

they said,

“He
will
do nothing!

No
harm
will come
to us;

we
will never
see sword or
famine.

13

The
prophets
are but wind

and
the word
is not in them;

  so

let
what they
say

be
done
to them.”

14

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
God Almighty
says:

“Because
the people have
spoken these words,

I will make
my words in your
mouth a fire

and
these people
the wood

it
consumes.

15

People of Israel,”
declares
the Lord,

“I am
bringing
a distant nation
against you—

an ancient
and enduring
nation,

a people
whose language
you do not
know,

whose
speech you do not
understand.

16

Their quivers
are like an open
grave;

all
of them are
mighty warriors.

17

They will
devour your
harvests

and food,

devour
your sons
and daughters;

they will
devour your flocks
and herds,

devour
your vines
and fig trees.

With
the sword
they will destroy

the fortified
cities

in
which
you trust.

18

 “Yet
even in
those days,”

declares
the Lord,

“I will not
destroy you
completely.

19

And when
the people
ask,

‘Why has the Lord
our God done
all this to
us?’

you will
tell them,

‘As
you have
forsaken me

and

served
foreign gods
in your own
land,

so now
you will serve
foreigners

in
a land
not your own.’

20

“Announce this
to the descendants
of Jacob

and
proclaim it
in Judah:

21

Hear this,

you
foolish
and senseless
people,

who
have eyes

but
do not
see,

who
have ears

but
do not
hear:

22

Should you
not fear me?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should you not
tremble in my
presence?

I
made
the sand

a boundary
for the
sea,

an everlasting
barrier it cannot
cross.

The waves
may roll,

but
they cannot
prevail;

they may roar,
but they cannot
cross it.

23

But
these people
have stubborn

and
rebellious
hearts;

they
have turned
aside

and
gone away.

24

They
do not say
to themselves,

‘Let us
fear the Lord
our God,

who
gives
autumn

and
spring rains
in season,

who
assures us

of
the regular
weeks

of
harvest.’

25

Your
wrong doings
have kept these
away;

your sins
have deprived you
of good.

26

“Among
my people are
the wicked

who
lie in wait

like men
who snare
birds

and
like those
who set traps

to catch
people.

27

Like
cages full of
birds,

their houses
are full
of

deceit;

they
have become

rich
and powerful

28

    and
have grown fat
and sleek.

Their
evil deeds
have no limit;

they
do not
seek justice.

They
do not
promote

the case
of the fatherless;

they
do not
defend the just cause
of the poor.

29

Should I not
punish them
for this?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should I not
avenge myself
on such a nation as this?

30

“A horrible
and shocking thing
has happened
in the land:

31

The prophets
prophesy
lies,

the priests
rule by their own
authority,

and
my people
love it this way.

But
what will you do
in the end?

 너희는
예루살렘 거리로
빨리 다니며

그 넓은
거리에서
찾아보고 알라

너희가 만일

정의를
행하며

진리를
구하는 자를
한 사람이라도
찾으면

내가
이 성읍을
용서하리라

2 

그들이

여호와께서
살아 계심을 두고
맹세할지라도

실상은
거짓 맹세니라

3 

여호와여

주의 눈이
진리를 찾지
아니하시나이까

주께서
그들을
치셨을지라도

그들이
아픈 줄을
알지 못하며

그들을
멸하셨을지라도

그들이
징계를 받지
아니하고

그들의 얼굴을
바위보다 굳게
하여

돌아오기를
싫어하므로

4 

내가
말하기를

이 무리는
비천하고

어리석은 것
뿐이라

여호와의 길,
자기 하나님의 법을
알지 못하니

5 

내가
지도자들에게
가서

그들에게
말하리라

그들은
여호와의 길,
자기 하나님의 법을
안다 하였더니

그들도 일제히
멍에를 꺾고
결박을 끊은지라

6 

그러므로
수풀에서 나오는
사자가 그들을
죽이며

사막의 이리가
그들을
멸하며

표범이
성읍들을
엿본즉

그리로
나오는 자마다
찢기리니

이는
그들의 허물이
많고

반역이
심함이니이다

7 

내가 어찌
너를 용서하겠느냐

네 자녀가
나를 버리고

신이
아닌 것들로
맹세하였으며

내가 그들을
배불리
먹인즉

그들이
간음하며

창기의 집에
허다히 모이며

8 

그들은
두루 다니는
살진 수말 같이

각기
이웃의 아내를
따르며

소리지르는도다

9 

여호와의
말씀이니라

내가 어찌
이 일들에 대하여
벌하지 아니하겠으며

내 마음이
이런 나라에
보복하지 않겠느냐

여호와께서 백성을 버리시다

10 

너희는
그 성벽에 올라가
무너뜨리되

다 무너뜨리지
말고

그 가지만
꺾어 버리라

여호와의 것이
아님이니라

11 

여호와의
말씀이니라

이스라엘의 집과
유다의 집이

내게 심히
반역하였느니라

12 

그들이
여호와를
인정하지 아니하며
말하기를

여호와께서는
계시지 아니하니

재앙이
우리에게
임하지 아니할
것이요

우리가
칼과 기근을
보지 아니할 것이며

13 

선지자들은
바람이라

말씀이
그들의 속에
있지 아니한즉

그같이
그들이 당하리라
하느니라

14 

그러므로

만군의 하나님
여호와께서

이와 같이
말씀하시니라

너희가
이 말을 하였은즉

볼지어다

내가
네 입에 있는
나의 말을

불이
되게 하고

이 백성을
나무가 되게 하여

불사르리라

15 

여호와의
말씀이니라

이스라엘
집이여

보라
내가 한 나라를
먼 곳에서 너희에게로
오게 하리니

곧 강하고
오랜 민족이라

그 나라 말을
네가 알지 못하며

그 말을
네가 깨닫지
못하느니라

16 

그 화살통은
열린 무덤이요

그 사람들은
다 용사라

17 

그들이
네 자녀들이
먹을

추수 곡물과
양식을
먹으며

네 양 떼와
소 떼를
먹으며

네 포도나무와
무화과나무 열매를
먹으며

네가 믿는
견고한 성들을
칼로 파멸하리라

18 

여호와의
말씀이니라

그 때에도
내가 너희를 진멸하지는
아니하리라

19 

그들이 만일
이르기를

우리 하나님
여호와께서

어찌하여
이 모든 일을
우리에게 행하셨느냐
하거든

너는
그들에게
이르기를

너희가
여호와를
버리고

너희 땅에서
이방 신들을
섬겼은즉

이와 같이
너희 것이 아닌
땅에서

이방인들을
섬기리라 하라

여호와께서 백성에게 이르시다

20 

너는 이를
야곱 집에 선포하며

유다에
공포하여 이르기를

21 

어리석고
지각이 없으며

눈이
있어도

보지 못하며

귀가
있어도

듣지 못하는

백성이여

이를
들을지어다

22 

여호와의
말씀이니라

너희가
나를 두려워하지
아니하느냐

내 앞에서
떨지 아니하겠느냐

내가
모래를 두어
바다의 한계를
삼되

그것으로
영원한 한계를
삼고

지나치지 못하게
하였으므로

파도가
거세게 이나

그것을
이기지 못하며
뛰노나

그것을
넘지 못하느니라

23 

그러나
너희 백성은

배반하며
반역하는 마음이
있어서

이미
배반하고
갔으며

24 

또 너희
마음으로

우리에게
이른 비와
늦은 비를
때를 따라 주시며

우리를 위하여
추수 기한을
정하시는

우리 하나님
여호와를

경외하자
말하지도 아니하니

25 

너희 허물이
이러한 일들을
물리쳤고

너희 죄가
너희로부터

좋은 것을
막았느니라

26 

내 백성
가운데

악인이
있어서

새 사냥꾼이
매복함 같이
지키며

덫을 놓아
사람을 잡으며

27 

새장에
새들이 가득함
같이

너희 집들에
속임이 가득하도다

그러므로
너희가 번창하고
거부가 되어

28 

살지고
윤택하며

또 행위가
심히 악하여

자기 이익을
얻으려고

송사
곧 고아의
송사를

공정하게 하지
아니하며

빈민의 재판을
공정하게 판결하지
아니하니

29

 내가
이 일들에
대하여

벌하지
아니하겠으며

내 마음이
이같은 나라에
보복하지 아니하겠느냐

여호와의
말씀이니라

30 

이 땅에
무섭고 놀라운 일이
있도다

31 

선지자들은

거짓을
예언하며

제사장들은

자기 권력으로
다스리며

내 백성은

그것을
좋게 여기니

마지막에는
너희가 어찌하려느냐
