The Seven Detestable

There are
six things
the Lord
hates,

seven
that are
detestable
to him:

*haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

hands
that shed
innocent blood,

a heart
that devises
wicked
schemes,

feet
that are
quick to rush
into evil,

a false
witness who
pours out
lies

and
a person who
stirs up
conflict

in the community.

Proverbs 6:16-19

John Chapter 1

The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was with God
in the beginning.

3
Through him
all things were made;

without him
nothing was made
that has been made.

4
In him was life,

and that life was

the light of

all mankind.

5
The light shines
in the darkness,

and the darkness has not
overcome it.

6
There was a man
sent from God
whose name was John.

7
He came as a witness
to testify concerning that light,
so that through him
all might believe.

8
He himself
was not the light;

he came only
as a witness to the light.

The true light
that gives light to everyone
was coming into the world.

He was in the world,

and though

the world was made

through him,

the world did not

recognize him.

He came to that
which was his own,

but his own
did not receive him.

Yet
to all who did receive
him,

to those
who believed in his
name,

he
gave the right
to become
children of God—

children born not of
natural descent,

nor of human decision
or a husband’s will,

but
born of God.

The Word

became flesh

and

made his dwelling

among us.

We have seen his glory,
the glory of the one and only Son,

who
came from the Father,

full of

grace

and truth.

(John testified concerning him.
He cried out, saying,

“This is the one
I spoke about when I said,

‘He who comes after me
has surpassed me because

he was before me.’”)

Out of his fullness

we have all received grace

in place of grace already given.

For the law was
given through Moses;

grace and truth
came through

Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God,

but the one and only Son,

who is himself God

and is in closest relationship

with the Father,

has made him known.

John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah

Now this was John’s testimony
when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem
sent priests and Levites to ask him
who he was.

He did not fail to confess,
but confessed freely,

“I am not the Messiah.”

They asked him,
“Then who are you?

Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”

“Are you the Prophet?”
He answered, “No.”

Finally they said,
“Who are you?

Give us an answer to take back
to those who sent us.
What do you say about yourself?”

John replied
in the words of Isaiah the prophet,

“I am the voice of one calling
in the wilderness,

‘Make straight
the way for the Lord.’”

Now the Pharisees
who had been sent 25 questioned him,

“Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah,
nor the Prophet?”

“I baptize with water,”
John replied,

“but among you
stands one you do not know.

27
He is the one
who comes after me,

the straps of whose sandals

I am not worthy to untie.”

This all happened at Bethany
on the other side of the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.

John Testifies About Jesus

The next day
John saw Jesus
coming toward him and said,

“Look, the Lamb of God,

who takes away

the sin of the world!

This is the one I meant when I said,
‘A man who comes after me
has surpassed me

because
he was before me.’

31
I myself did not know him,
but the reason I came baptizing
with water was that he might be
revealed to Israel.”

Then John gave this testimony:
“I saw the Spirit come down
from heaven as a dove and
remain on him.

33
And
I myself did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize
with water told me,

‘The man

on whom you see the Spirit

come down and remain is

the one who will baptize

with the Holy Spirit.’

I have seen and
I testify that this is God’s
Chosen One.”

John’s Disciples Follow Jesus

The next day
John was there again
with two of his disciples.

When he saw
Jesus passing by,

he said,

“Look, the Lamb of God!”

When the two disciples
heard him say this,
they followed Jesus.

Turning around,
Jesus saw them following and asked,

“What do you want?”

They said, “Rabbi”
(which means “Teacher”),
“where are you staying?”

“Come,”
he replied,
“and you will see.”

So they went and saw
where he was staying,

and they spent
that day with him.

It was about
four in the afternoon.

Andrew,
Simon Peter’s brother,
was one of the two who heard
what John had said and who had
followed Jesus.

The first thing Andrew did was
to find his brother Simon and tell him,

“We have found the Messiah”

(that is, the Christ).

And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus
looked at him and said,
“You are Simon son of John.

You will be called Cephas”
(which, when translated, is Peter[g]).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

The next day

Jesus decided to leave for Galilee.
Finding Philip,

he said to him,
“Follow me.”

Philip,
like Andrew and Peter,
was from the town of
Bethsaida.

Philip found
Nathanael and told him,

“We have found the one
Moses wrote about in the Law,

and about whom
the prophets also wrote—

Jesus of Nazareth,

the son of Joseph.”

“Nazareth! Can anything good
come from there?”
Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

When Jesus saw
Nathanael approaching,

he said of him,
“Here truly is an Israelite
in whom there is no deceit.”

“How do you know me?”
Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered,

“I saw you
while you were still under
the fig tree before Philip called you.”

Then Nathanael declared,

“Rabbi, you are the Son of God;

you are the king of Israel.”

Jesus said,
“You believe  because I told you I saw you
under the fig tree.

You will see
greater things than that.”

He then added,

“Very truly I tell you,

you will see

‘heaven open, and the angels of God

ascending and descending

on’ the Son of Man.”

new!”

this down,

victorious

Give thanks
to the Lord,

for
he is good;

his love
endures forever.

the redeemed
of the Lord

tell
their story—

those
he redeemed
from the hand of
the foe,

those
he gathered
from the lands,

from
east and west,

from
north and south.

Some
wandered
in desert  wastelands,

finding no way
to a city where they
could settle.

They were
hungry and thirsty,

and
their lives
ebbed away.

6

Then
they cried out
to the Lord

in
their
trouble,

and
he delivered
them

from
their distress.

7

He
led them
by a straight way

to a city
where they could
settle.

8

Let them
give thanks
to the Lord

for
his unfailing
love

and

his
wonderful deeds
for mankind,

9

for he satisfies
the thirsty

and fills
the hungry
with good things.

Some
sat in darkness,
in utter darkness,

prisoners
suffering
in iron chains,

rebelled

commands

the Most High.

healed them;

on the sea in ships;

mounted up

trouble,

stilled
the storm
to a whisper;

the waves

exalt him

the assembly

the elders.

turned
rivers into a desert,

flowing springs
into thirsty
ground,

fruitful land
into a salt waste,

the wickedness
of those who lived there.

into pools of water

and  the parched ground
into flowing springs;

there
he brought
the hungry to live,

and they founded
a city where they
could settle.

sowed fields

planted
vineyards

yielded
a fruitful harvest;

blessed
them,

their numbers
greatly increased,

and he did not
let their herds
diminish.

Then
their numbers
decreased,

and they were
humbled  by oppression,
calamity and sorrow;

he who
pours contempt
on nobles   made them wander
in a trackless waste.

But

he lifted
the needy
out of their affliction

and
increased
their families like
flocks.

42

The upright
see and rejoice,

but
all the wicked
shut their mouths.

43

Let
the one
who is wise
heed these things

and ponder
the loving deeds
of the Lord.

인자하심과

인생에게
행하신 기적으로
말미암아

그를
찬송할지로다

백성의
모임에서
그를 높이며

장로들의
자리에서

그를
찬송할지로다

여호와께서는

강이 변하여
광야가 되게
하시며

샘이 변하여
마른 땅이 되게
하시며

34

그 주민의 악으로
말미암아

옥토가 변하여
염전이 되게
하시며

35

또 광야가 변하여
못이 되게
하시며

마른 땅이 변하여
샘물이 되게
하시고

36

주린 자들로
거기에 살게
하사

그들이
거주할 성읍을
준비하게 하시고

37

밭에 파종하며
포도원을 재배하여

풍성한 소출을
거두게 하시며

38

또 복을 주사

그들이
크게 번성하게
하시고

그의 가축이
감소하지 아니하게
하실지라도

39

다시 압박과
재난과 우환을
통하여

그들의 수를
줄이시며

낮추시는도다

40

여호와께서

고관들에게는
능욕을 쏟아 부으시고

길 없는 황야에서
유리하게 하시나

41

궁핍한 자는
그의 고통으로부터
건져 주시고

그의 가족을
양 떼 같이 지켜
주시나니

42

정직한 자는
보고 기뻐하며

모든 사악한 자는
자기 입을 봉하리로다

43

지혜 있는 자들은
이러한 일들을 지켜 보고

여호와의
인자하심을
