한 문장이 삶을 바꾸기도 한다
“한 문장이 우리 마음에 너무 강력하게 박혀 다른 모든 것을 잊게 만들 때, 바로 그 한 문장이 끼친 효과는 엄청날 수 있다.”
“하나님의 자녀에게는 두 가지 큰 특징이 있다.” 라일(J. C. Ryle)은 고전 ‘거룩’(Holiness)에서 이렇게 썼다. 당신이라면 그 두 가지를 뭐라고 썼겠는가?

믿음과 회개? 사랑과 소망? 찬양과 감사? 겸손과 기쁨? 라일의 책을 읽기 전이었다면, 나도 내가 무엇을 꼽았을지 모르겠다. 그러나 한 가지는 확실하다. 내가 결코 라일이 꼽은 두 가지를 생각하지는 못했을 거라는 점이다.

전쟁과 평화. 전투와 휴식. 군대 간 충돌과 조약이 가져다주는 평온. 그리스도인이라면 이런 두 가지보다 훨씬 더 많은 특징을 가지면 가졌지 결코 더 적지는 않다. 그리스도인은 아버지의 집에서 행복을 누리는 어린아이인 동시에 구주의 전쟁에 참전한 군인이다.

라일의 이 문장은 우리를 절망에서 구하는 데에 적지 않은 역할을 할 것이다.

전쟁터 한가운데 떨어지다

나는 그리스도인이 되었을 때 내가 전쟁터에 들어서고 있다는 사실을 전혀 몰랐다. 처음엔 낙하산을 타고 구원의 영광 위로 살포시 내리는 것처럼 황홀함을 느꼈다. 마침내 깨어나 그리스도를 알게 되었고, 죄로부터 안전해졌으며, 무엇보다 나는 천국을 향해 나아가고 있었다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않아 내가 착륙한 곳은 내가 전혀 준비되어 있지 않은 치열한 싸움터라는 것을 깨달았다.

물론 갈등은 언제나 내 안에 있었다. 그러나 내가 그리스도인이 되고 느낀 내적 분열은 차원이 달랐다. 몇 달 동안 평화의 땅처럼 느껴졌던 내 영혼이 전쟁터가 되었다. 참호를 팠고 전선이 그어졌다. 나는 과거에 한 번도 직면한 적이 없는 의심에 시달리고 있음을 깨달았다. 성경이 참되다는 것을 어떻게 알지? 하나님이 실재하신다는 것을 어떻게 알지? 게다가 죄를 죽이면 죽일수록 더 많은 죄가 내 속에서 고개를 쳐들었다. 이리저리 마구 얽힌 육체의 숲 사이를 기어 다니는 교묘하고 위장된 죄, 자기 아첨이라는 환상, 다른 사람을 향한 반사적인 정죄와 판단, 제멋대로이고 때로는 사악하기까지 한 생각, 그리고 하나님을 향한 변덕스러운 감정. 예수님 안에서 어느 정도의 평화를 누린 건 사실이지만, 그런 평화조차 마치 적에게 포위당한 것처럼 느껴졌다.

뭔가 단단히 잘못된 게 분명하다고 생각했다. 그리스도인이라면 이런 식의 흑암과 깊은 분열에 직면하는 건 말이 되지 않았다. 그렇다면, 결국 나는 그리스도인이 아니라는 소리였다. 나처럼 영적 곤경에 처한 사람이라면 결코 그분께 속했을 리 없다는 생각에, 한동안 나는 하나님을 아버지라고 부르지 않았다.

기독교 싸움

바로 그때에 라일을 만났다. 간단하지만 적절하기 이를 데 없는 “싸움”(The Fight)이라는 제목의 장에서 그는 나를 압도하는 강렬한 논증을 바탕으로 “진정한 기독교는 싸움이다”(66)라고, 그리고 모든 성자는 하나같이 군인이었다고 말했다. “은혜가 있는 곳에 싸움이 있다”라고 그는 참으로 남자다운 단호함으로 썼다. “싸움이 없이는 거룩함도 없다. 구원받은 영혼은 항상 자신이 싸움터 한 가운데에 있다는 것을 알기 마련이다”(70).

일련의 성경 본문이 뒤따랐다. 어느 정도 수준에서야 다 아는 구절이었지만, 또 다른 수준에서는 전혀 모르던 말씀이었다.

“믿음의 선한 싸움을 싸우라”(딤전 6:12).

“너는 그리스도 예수의 좋은 병사로 나와 함께 고난을 받으라”(딤후 2:3).
“선한 싸움을 싸우며”(딤전 1:18).

하나님과 화평하게 하는 복음이 가져다주는 것은 죄와 벌이는 치열한 싸움이다. 왜냐하면 “예수님이 나의 주인이다”라는 말은 “죄는 나의 주인이 아니다”라는 것과 같은 말이고, 따라서 예수님을 따르는 것은 마귀에 향한 반역이기 때문이다. 그러므로 하늘의 위로로 우리를 감싸시는 성령님께서는 우리에게 하나님의 전신갑주를 입히신다.

라일의 글은 나를 묘한 위로로 채웠다. 몇 달 동안 나는 마치 전투에 뛰어든 민간인처럼 느꼈다. 그러나 이제는 제대로 전선에 배치된 군인처럼 느낀다. 내 전쟁은 당연한 것이었고, 진짜 중요한 것은 이게 꼭 싸워야 하는 좋은 전쟁이라는 사실이다.

전쟁은 정상이다

“육체의 소욕은 성령을 거스르고 성령은 육체를 거스르나니 이 둘이 서로 대적함으로 너희가 원하는 것을 하지 못하게 하려 함이니라”(갈 5:17)라는 말씀이 사실이라면, 그리스도인에게 내면이 분열되어 갈라지고 또 찢어지는 듯 느끼는 것보다 더 정상적인 것은 없다. 라일은 이렇게 말한다. “우리 안에 두 가지 원칙이 있으며 각각이 나를 지배하기 위해서 지금도 치열하게 싸우고 있다”(72). 우리가 영과 육을 모두 가지고 있는 한, 전쟁은 정상이다.

그러므로 기도해야 한다는 것을 알고 있는 그 순간에조차 모락모락 피어나는 유혹, 기도하고 싶지 않다는 끔찍할 정도로 강한 충동을 만날 때 놀라지 말아야 한다. 거부해야 함을 알고 있는 음식, 수면, 음료, 섹스, 그리고 오락에 대한 갈망을 충족시키고자 하는 고통스러운 욕망이 솟아날 때도 놀라지 말아야 한다. 가족에게 복음을 나누라는 성령님의 강한 명령에도 불구하고 우리는 얼마든지 영적 나태함에 빠질 수 있다. 아침에 충만하던 영적 충만함이 오후가 되면 어느새 사라져버리는 변덕스러운 영적 건망증도 만난다. 그리고 계시된 하나님의 말씀보다 나 자신의 이해에 더 의존하려는 충동적인 강박도 우리를 떠나지 않는다.

적의 포격에 놀라는 군인이 없듯이 우리는 이런 때에 놀라지 말아야 한다. 오히려 용기를 내야 한다. 라일은 말한다. “우리는 결코 사탄의 친구가 아니다. 이 세상의 왕들처럼, 사탄도 자신을 추종하는 자들과는 결코 전투를 벌이지 않는다”(72). 내적 분열과 반발심은 결코 우리가 사탄과의 전투에서 졌다는 것을 의미하지 않는다. 단지 전쟁이 시작되었음을 의미할 뿐이다.

선한 싸움

그리스도인의 싸움은 단순한 전쟁이 아니라, 이 세상에서 가장 잘 알려진 전쟁이다. 라일은 이렇게 썼다. “기독교의 싸움은 선한 싸움, 정말로 선한 싸움, 뭐라 형언할 수 없을 정도로 좋은 싸움이라는 사실을 마음에 새기자”(80). 그렇다. 치열한 전쟁이다. 우리는 전투에서 부상당하고 피를 흘리기도 한다. 바닥에 떨어졌을 때는 절망의 유혹을 느낄 수도 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 우리가 싸우는 그리스도인의 싸움이 얼마나 선한 것인가?

정말 좋다. 하나님께서 원수들을 밟을 것을 확신하기 때문이다(미 7:19). 정말로 좋다. 가장 힘든 전투를 만날 때면 하나님이 우리를 더 강하게 하시겠다고 약속하셨기 때문이다(사 41:10). 진짜로 좋다. 넘어지는 사람조차 예외 없이 다 용서받을 수 있기 때문이다(요일 1:9). 좋은 전쟁이다 우리가 죽이는 건 사람이 아니라 오로지 죄와 마귀이다(롬 8:13). 너무나도 좋다. 이 전쟁으로 인해 우리의 인간성은 파괴되는 게 아니라 회복되기 때문이다(골 3:5, 9-10).

True Christianity Is a Fight

“The child of God has two great marks about him . . .” So writes J.C. Ryle in his classic book Holiness. How would you finish the sentence?

Faith and repentance? Love and hope? Praise and thanksgiving? Humility and joy? I’m not sure what I would have said before reading Ryle, but I know I would not have finished the sentence as he does:

The child of God has two great marks about him. . . . He may be known by his inward warfare, as well as by his inward peace. (72)
Warfare and peace. Combat and rest. The clash of armies and the calm of treaties. The Christian may have more marks about him than these two, but never less. He is a child in the Father’s home, and he is a soldier in the Savior’s war.

That sentence would play no small role in saving me from despair.

Parachuting into War

When I entered the Christian life, I had no idea I was walking into war. I felt, at first, like a man parachuting over the glories of salvation — finally awake to Christ, finally safe from sin, finally headed for heaven. But soon I landed in a country I didn’t recognize, amid a fight I wasn’t ready for.

The conflict, of course, was within me. I had never felt such inner division: my soul, which for a few months had felt like a land of peace, became a field of war — trenches dug, battle lines drawn. I found myself assailed by doubts I hadn’t faced before: How do you know the Bible is true? How do you know God is even real? The more I killed sin, the more I seemed to discover hidden pockets of sin — subtle, camouflaged sins crawling through forests of tangled flesh: self-flattering fantasies, knee-jerk judgments against others, unruly and sometimes wicked thoughts, fickle affections for God. I still enjoyed a measure of peace in Jesus, but it felt now like peace under siege.

Something must be wrong, I thought. Surely a Christian wouldn’t face darkness this black, division this deep. Surely, then, I’m not a Christian. For a season, I no longer called God Father, fearful of presuming that such an embattled one as I might belong to him.

Christianity Fights

Then came Ryle. In a chapter simply and aptly titled “The Fight,” he proved to me, with arresting intensity, that “true Christianity is a fight” (66), and every saint a soldier. “Where there is grace, there will be conflict,” he wrote with his manly matter-of-factness. “There is no holiness without a warfare. Saved souls will always be found to have fought a fight” (70).

A battery of biblical texts followed — texts I had known on some level, yet clearly hadn’t known on another.

“Fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Timothy 6:12).
“Put to death the deeds of the body” (Romans 8:13; see also Colossians 3:5).
“Put on the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11).
“Abstain from the passions of your flesh, which wage war against your soul” (1 Peter 2:11).
“Watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41).
“Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:3).
“Wage the good warfare” (1 Timothy 1:18).
The same gospel that brings peace with God brings war with sin. For to say, “Jesus is Lord” is also to say, “And sin is not” — and to follow Jesus is to walk in high-handed rebellion against the devil. So, the same Spirit who wraps us with heavenly comfort also clads us with the armor of God.

Ryle’s chapter filled me with strange comfort. For months, I had felt like a civilian who had somehow walked into battle; now I felt like a soldier deployed. My war was a normal war — and more than that, a good one.

Normal War

If “the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh” (Galatians 5:17), then what could be more normal than for Christians to feel divided, split, torn asunder in our inner being — or as Ryle says, to feel that we have “two principles within us, contending for the mastery” (72)? As long as we carry both Spirit and flesh, war will be normal.

We should not be surprised, then, when we find within us a dreadfully strong pull not to pray when we know we need to pray. Or an aching longing to satisfy some craving — for food, sleep, drink, sex, entertainment — that we know we should refuse. Or a heavy lethargy when the Spirit bids us to share the gospel or serve our family. Or a fickle forgetfulness that dulls the morning’s zeal by early afternoon. Or a driving compulsion to lean on our own understanding rather than the revealed word of God.

“The presence of inner division and opposition does not mean we’ve lost; it means the war has begun.”
We should not be surprised in such moments, any more than an army should be surprised by enemy fire. Rather, we should take courage. “We are evidently no friends of Satan,” Ryle writes. “Like the kings of this world, he wars not against his own subjects” (72). The presence of inner division and opposition does not mean we’ve lost; it means the war has begun.

Good War

The Christian fight is not just any war, but the best war the world has ever known. “Let us settle it in our minds that the Christian fight is a good fight — really good, truly good, emphatically good,” says Ryle (80). Yes, the war is fierce. The battle sometimes beats and bloodies us. At our lowest, we can feel tempted to despair. Even still, oh how good is the Christian fight.

Good, because God assures us that he will tread down our foes (Micah 7:19). Good, because he has promised to strengthen us in the thickest parts of the battle (Isaiah 41:10). Good, because all who fall can find forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Good, because we slay only sins and devils, not men (Romans 8:13). Good, because this war restores rather than ruins our humanity (Colossians 3:5, 9–10).

And most of all, good, because we fight under, with, and for Christ. He is our great Captain and our fellow Soldier, who won us to himself by dying for us, and who vows now never to leave our side (Matthew 28:20). “Would anyone live the life of the Christian soldier?” Ryle asks. “Let him abide in Christ, get closer to Christ, tighten his hold on Christ every day that he lives” (76).

Today, then, we march forth under the banner “Christ is better,” unsurprised and undaunted by battle, swords drawn against everything within us unlike him. And we look to the day when “the two great marks” of the Christian become one, and war gives way to Jesus’s endless peace.

Blessings for Obedience

1

If you fully obey the Lord your God
and carefully follow all his commands
I give you today,

the Lord
your God will set you high
above all the nations on earth.

2

All these blessings will come on you
and accompany you
if you obey the Lord your God:

3

You will be

blessed

in the city

and blessed

in the country.

4

The fruit of your womb
will be blessed,

and the crops of your land
and the young of your livestock—

the calves of your herds
and the lambs of your flocks.

5

Your basket
and your kneading trough
will be blessed.

6

You will be blessed

when you come in

and blessed

when you go out.

7

The Lord will grant that
the enemies who rise up against you
will be defeated before you.

They will come at you
from one direction

but flee from you in seven.

8

The Lord will send a blessing
on your barns and on everything
you put your hand to.

The Lord your God will bless you
in the land he is giving you.

9

The Lord will establish you
as his holy people,

as he promised you on oath,
if you keep the commands of the Lord
your God and walk in obedience to him.

10

Then all the peoples on earth
will see that you are called
by the name of the Lord,
and they will fear you.

11

The Lord will grant you
abundant prosperity—
in the fruit of your womb,

the young of your livestock
and the crops of your ground—
in the land he swore to your ancestors
to give you.

The Lord will open the heavens,

the storehouse of his bounty,

to send rain on your land in season

and to bless all the work of your hands.

You will lend to many nations

but will borrow from none.

The Lord
will make you the head,
not the tail.

If you
pay attention to
the commands of the Lord
your God

that
I give you this day
and carefully follow them,

you will
always be at the top,
never at the bottom.

Do not turn aside
from any of the commands
I give you today,

to the right
or to the left,

following other gods
and serving them.

Curses for Disobedience

However,

if you do not obey
the Lord your God

and do not
carefully follow
all his commands
and decrees

I am giving you today,
all these curses will come on you
and overtake you:

You will be cursed
in the city

and
cursed
in the country.

17

Your basket
and your kneading trough
will be cursed.

18

The fruit of your womb
will be cursed,

and the crops of your land,
and the calves of your herds
and the lambs of your flocks.

19

You will be cursed

when you come in

and cursed

when you go out.

20

The Lord will send

on you curses,

confusion

and rebuke in

everything you put your hand to,

until you are destroyed

and come to sudden ruin

because of the evil you have done

in forsaking him.

21

The Lord will plague you
with diseases

until
he has destroyed you
from the land you are entering
to possess.

22

The Lord will strike you
with wasting disease,

with fever and inflammation,

with scorching heat

and drought,

with blight and mildew,

which will plague you

until you perish.

The sky over your head
will be bronze,

the ground
beneath you iron.

24

The Lord will
turn the rain of your country
into dust and powder;

it will come down
from the skies

until you are destroyed.

25

The Lord
will cause you
to be defeated
before your enemies.

You will come at them
from one direction
but flee from them in seven,

and you will become
a thing of horror
to all the kingdoms on earth.

26

Your carcasses
will be food for all the birds
and the wild animals,

and there will be no one
to frighten them away.

27

The Lord
will afflict you
with the boils of Egypt

and with tumors,
festering sores and the itch,
from which you cannot be cured.

28

The Lord will afflict you
with madness,

blindness
and confusion of mind.

29

At midday
you will grope about
like a blind person in the dark.

You will be unsuccessful
in everything you do;

day after day you
will be oppressed
and robbed,

with no one to rescue you.

30

You will be pledged
to be married to a woman,

but another will take her
and rape her.

You will build a house,
but you will not live in it.

You will plant a vineyard,
but you will not even begin
to enjoy its fruit.

31

Your ox will be slaughtered
before your eyes,

but you will eat none of it.
Your donkey will be forcibly
taken from you and
will not be returned.

Your sheep will be given
to your enemies,

and no one will rescue them.

32

Your sons and daughters
will be given to another nation,

and you will wear out your eyes
watching for them day after day,
powerless to lift a hand.

33

A people that you do not know
will eat what your land and labor produce,

and you will have nothing but
cruel oppression all your days.

34

The sights you see
will drive you mad.

35

The Lord will afflict
your knees and legs with
painful boils that cannot be cured,

spreading from the soles of your feet
to the top of your head.

36

The Lord will drive you
and the king you set over you
to a nation unknown to you
or your ancestors.

There
you will worship other gods,
gods of wood and stone.

37

You will become a thing of horror,
a byword and an object of ridicule
among all the peoples
where the Lord will drive you.

38

You will sow much seed
in the field but you will harvest little,

because locusts will devour it.

39

You will plant vineyards
and cultivate them

but you will not drink
the wine or gather the grapes,
because worms will eat them.

40

You will have olive trees
throughout your country

but you will not use the oil,
because the olives will drop off.

41

You will have sons and daughters
but you will not keep them,

because they will go into captivity.

42

Swarms of locusts
will take over all your trees
and the crops of your land.

43

The foreigners
who reside among you will rise
above you higher and higher,
but you will sink lower and lower.

44

They will lend to you,
but you will not lend to them.

They will be the head,
but you will be the tail.

45

All these curses will come on you.
They will pursue you and overtake you
until you are destroyed,

because

you did not

obey the Lord your God

and observe  the command

s and decrees he gave you.

46

They will be a sign and a wonder
to you and your descendants forever.

47

Because

you did not

serve the Lord your God

joyfully

and gladly

in the time of

prosperity,

48

therefore
in hunger and thirst,

in nakedness and dire poverty,

you will serve the enemies

the Lord sends against you.

He will put an iron yoke on your neck

until he has destroyed you.

49

The Lord
will bring a nation against you
from far away,

from the ends of the earth,
like an eagle swooping down,

a nation whose language
you will not understand,

50

a fierce-looking nation

without respect

for the old or pity

for the young.

51

They will devour
the young of your livestock
and the crops of your land

until you are destroyed.

They will leave you no grain,
new wine or olive oil,

nor any calves of your herds
or lambs of your flocks

until you are ruined.

52

They will lay siege to all the cities
throughout your land

until the high fortified walls
in which you trust fall down.

They will besiege all the cities
throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.

53

Because of the suffering
your enemy will inflict on you
during the siege,

you will eat the fruit of the womb,
the flesh of the sons and daughters
the Lord your God has given you.

54

Even
the most gentle
and  *sensitive man among you
will have no compassion

on his own brother
or the wife he loves
or his surviving children,

55

and he will not give to
one of them any of the flesh
of his children that he is eating.

It will be all he has left
because of the suffering
your enemy will inflict on you
during the siege of all your cities.

56

The most gentle and *sensitive woman among you—
so sensitive and gentle that she would not
venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—
will begrudge the husband she loves
and her own son or daughter

57

the afterbirth from her womb
and the children she bears.

For in her dire need
she intends to eat them secretly
because of the suffering your enemy
will inflict on you

during the siege of your cities.

58

If you do not carefully follow
all the words of this law,

which are written in this book,
and do not revere this glorious
and awesome name —
the Lord your God—

59

the Lord will send
fearful plagues on you
and your descendants,

harsh and prolonged disasters,
and severe and lingering illnesses.

60

He will bring on you
all the diseases of Egypt
that you dreaded,
and they will cling to you.

61

The Lord will also bring on you
every kind of sickness and disaster
not recorded in this Book of the Law,
until you are destroyed.

62

You who were as numerous
as the stars in the sky will be left
but few in number,

because

you did not

obey the Lord your God.

63

Just as it pleased the Lord
to make you prosper and increase in number,

so it will please him to ruin and destroy you.
You will be uprooted from the land
you are entering to possess.

64

Then the Lord will scatter you
among all nations,

from one end of the earth
to the other.

There you will worship other gods—
gods of wood and stone,

which neither
you nor your ancestors have known.

65

Among those nations
you will find no repose,

no resting place
for the sole of your foot.

There the Lord will give you
an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing,
and a despairing heart.

66

You will live in constant suspense,
filled with dread both night and day,
never sure of your life.

67

In the morning you will say,
“If only it were evening!”
and in the evening,
“If only it were morning!”—

because of the terror
that will fill your hearts
and the sights that your eyes will see.

68

The Lord will send you
back in ships to Egypt on a journey
I said you should never make again.

There you will offer yourselves for sale
to your enemies as male and female slaves,
but no one will buy you.

하실 것이라

성읍에서도 복을 받고

들에서도 복을 받을 것이며

네 몸의 자녀와
네 토지의 소산과 네 짐승의 새끼와

네가 성읍에서도 저주를 받으며

네 소를 네 목전에서 잡았으나

그의 형제와 그의 품의 아내와

극렬하게 하시리니

그 재앙이 크고 오래고
