John Chapter 14
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1
“Do not
let your hearts be
troubled.
You
believe in God;
believe
also in me.
2
My
Father’s house
has many rooms;
if
that were not so,
would
I have told you
that
I am
going there to prepare
a place for you?
3
And if I go
and prepare a place
for you,
I will come back and
take you to be with me
that
you also may be
where I am.
4
You know
the way to the place
where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father

Thomas
said to him,
“Lord,
we don’t know
where you are going,
so
how can we
know the way?”
6
Jesus answered,
“I am the way
and the truth
and the life.
No one
comes to the Father
except
through me.
7
If you
really know me,
you will know
my Father
as well.
From now on,
you do know him
and have seen him.”
8
Philip said,
“Lord,
show us the Father
and that will be enough
for us.”
9
Jesus answered:
“Don’t you know me,
Philip,
even after I have been
among you such a long time?
Anyone
who has seen me
has seen the Father.
How can you say,
‘Show us the Father’?

Don’t you believe
that I am in the Father,
and that
the Father is in me?
The words I say to you
I do not speak
on my own authority.
Rather,
it is the Father,
living in me,
who is
doing his work.

Believe me
when I say that
I am in the Father
and the Father is in me;
or at least
believe
on the evidence
of the works themselves.
12
Very truly I tell you,
whoever
believes in me
will do the works
I have been doing,
and
they will do
even greater things
than these,
because
I am going to the Father.

And
I will do
whatever you ask
in my name,
so that
the Father may be
glorified in the Son.

You may ask me
for anything in my name,
and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

“If you love me,
keep my commands.
16
And I will ask the Father,
and he will give you
another advocate
to help you
and be with you
forever—
17
the Spirit of truth.
The world cannot
accept him,
because
it neither sees him
nor knows him.
But you know him,
for he lives with you
and will be in you.
18
I will not leave you
as orphans;
I will come to you.
19
Before long,
the world
will not see me anymore,
but
you will see me.
Because I live,
you also will live.
20
On that day
you will realize that
I am in my Father,
and you are in me,
and I am in you.
21
Whoever has my commands
and keeps them is the one
who loves me.
The one
who loves me will be
loved by my Father,
and I too will love them
and show myself
to them.”

Then Judas
(not Judas Iscariot) said,
“But, Lord,
why do you
intend to show yourself
to us
and
not to the world?”

Jesus replied,
“Anyone
who loves me
will obey my teaching.
My Father will love them,
and we will come to them
and make our home
with them.

Anyone
who does not
love me will not obey
my teaching.
These words
you hear are not my own;
they belong to the Father
who sent me.

“All this
I have spoken
while still with you.
26
But
the Advocate,
the Holy Spirit,
whom
the Father will send
in my name,
will teach you all things
and
will remind you
of everything
I have said to you.

Peace
I leave with you;
my peace I give you.
I do not
give to you
as the world gives.
Do not
let your hearts
be troubled
and
do not be afraid.

“You heard me say,
‘I am going away
and I am coming back to you.’
If you loved me,
you would be glad that
I am going to the Father,
for
the Father is
greater than I.

I have told you now
before it happens,
so that
when it does happen
you will believe.

I will not say
much more to you,
for
the prince of
this world is coming.
He has
no hold over me,

but
he comes so that
the world may learn that

John Chapter 13
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1
It was
just before
the Passover Festival.
Jesus knew
that the hour had come
for him to leave this world
and
go to the Father.
Having loved
his own who were
in the world,
he loved them
to the end.
2
The evening meal was
in progress,
and
the devil had
already prompted
Judas,
the son of Simon
Iscariot,
to betrayJesus.
3
Jesus knew
that the Father had put
all things under his power,
and that
he had
come from God
and was
returning to God;
4
so he got up
from the meal,
took off
his outer clothing,
and
wrapped a towel
around his waist.
5
After that,
he poured water into
a basin
and
began to wash
his disciples’ feet,
drying them
with the towel that was
wrapped around him.
6
He came to
Simon Peter,
who said to him,
“Lord,
are you going to
wash my feet?”
7
Jesus replied,
“You do not realize now
what I am doing,
but later
you will understand.”
8
“No,”
said Peter,
“you shall never
wash my feet.”
Jesus answered,
“Unless
I wash you,
you have no part
with me.”
9
“Then, Lord,”
Simon Peter replied,
“not just my feet
but my hands and my head
as well!”
10
Jesus answered,
“Those who
have had a bath
need only to wash their
feet;
their
whole body is clean.
And you are clean,
though
not every one
of you.”
11
For he knew
who was going to
betray him,
and that was why
he said not every one
was clean.
12
When
he had finished washing
their feet,
he put on
his clothes and returned
to his place.
“Do you understand
what I have done for you?”
he asked them.
13
“You call me
‘Teacher’ and
‘Lord,’
and rightly so,
for that is
what I am.
14
Now that
I, your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet,
you also should wash
one another’s feet.
15
I have set you an example
that you should do
as I have done for you.
16
Very truly I tell you,
no servant
is greater than
his master,
nor is a messenger
greater than
the one who sent him.
17
Now that you know
these things,
you will be blessed
if you do them.
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

“I am not referring to all of you;
I know those I have chosen.
But this is to fulfill
this passage of Scripture:
‘He who
shared my bread has
turned against me.’
19
“I am telling you now
before it happens,
so that when it does happen
you will believe that
I am who I am.
20
Very truly I tell you,
whoever
accepts anyone I send
accepts me;
and
whoever accepts me
accepts the one
who sent me.”
21
After he had said this,
Jesus was
troubled in spirit and testified,
“Very truly I tell you,
one of you
is going to betray
me.”
22
His disciples
stared at one another,
at a loss to know
which of them he meant.
23
One of them,
the disciple whom Jesus loved,
was reclining next to him.
24
Simon Peter
motioned to this disciple
and said,
“Ask him
which one he means.”
25
Leaning back
against Jesus, he asked him,
“Lord, who is it?”
26
Jesus answered,
“It is the one
to whom I will give
this piece of bread
when I have dipped it in the dish.”
Then,
dipping the piece of bread,
he gave it to
Judas,
the son of Simon
Iscariot.
27
As soon as
Judas took the bread,
Satan
entered into him.
So Jesus told him,
“What you are about to do,
do quickly.”
28
But
no one at the meal
understood why Jesus said
this to him.
29
Since
Judas had charge of
the money,
some thought
Jesus was telling him to buy
what was needed for the festival,
or to give
something to the poor.
30
As soon as
Judas had taken
the bread,
he went out.
And it was night.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31
When he was gone,
Jesus said,
“Now
the Son of Man
is glorified
and
God is glorified
in him.
32
If
God is
glorified in him,
God will glorify
the Son in himself,
and
will glorify him
at once.
33
“My children,
I will be with you
only a little longer.
You will look for me,
and just as I told the Jews,
so I tell you now:
Where I am going,
you cannot come.
34
“A new command
I give you:
Love one another.
As I have loved you,
so you must
love one another.
35
By this
everyone will know
that you are my disciples,
if you love one another.”
36
Simon Peter
asked him,
“Lord,
where are you going?”
Jesus replied,
“Where I am going,
you cannot follow now,
but you will follow later.”
37
Peter asked,
“Lord, why can’t I
follow you now?
I will lay down
my life for you.”
38
Then Jesus answered,
“Will you really
lay down your life for me?
Very truly I tell you,
before
the rooster crows,
you will
disown me
three times!

John Chapter 12
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
12
Six days
before the Passover,
Jesus
came to Bethany,
where
Lazarus lived,
whom
Jesus had raised
from the dead.
2
Here
a dinner was given
in Jesus’ honor.
Martha served,
while
Lazarus was
among those reclining
at the table with him.
3
Then
Mary took about a pint of
pure nard,
an expensive perfume;
she poured it on Jesus’ feet
and wiped his feet with her hair.
And
the house was filled with
the fragrance of the perfume.
4
But
one of his disciples,
Judas Iscariot,
who
was later to betray him,
objected,
5
“Why wasn’t this
perfume sold and the money
given to the poor?
It was worth a year’s wages.”
6
He did not say this
because he cared about the poor
but because
he was a thief;
as keeper
of the money bag,
he used to
help himself
to what was put into it.
7
“Leave her alone,”
Jesus replied. “
It was intended that
she should save this perfume
for the day of my burial.
8
You will always have
the poor among you,
but you will not always
have me.”
9
Meanwhile
a large crowd of Jews
found out that Jesus was there
and came,
not only
because of him
but also
to see Lazarus,
whom he had raised from
the dead.
10
So
the chief priests
made plans to kill
Lazarus as well,
11
for on account of him
many of the Jews were
going over to Jesus
and believing in him.
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
12
The next day
the great crowd that had come
for the festival heard that
Jesus was
on his way to Jerusalem.
13
They took palm branches
and went out to meet him,
shouting,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14
Jesus
found a young donkey
and sat on it,
as it is written:
15
“Do not be afraid,
Daughter Zion;
see,
your king is coming,
seated on a donkey’s colt.”
16
At first
his disciples did not
understand all this.
Only after
Jesus was glorified
did they realize
that
these things
had been written
about him
and that
these things had been
done to him.
17
Now the crowd that was with him
when he called Lazarus from the tomb
and raised him from the dead
continued to spread
the word.
18
Many people,
because they had heard that
he had performed this sign,
went out to meet him.
19
So
the Pharisees
said to one another,
“See,
this is getting us nowhere.

Jesus Predicts His Death

Now there were
some Greeks among those who
went up to worship at the festival.
21
They came to Philip,
who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,
with a request.
“Sir,” they said,
“we would like to see Jesus.”
22
Philip went to tell Andrew;
Andrew and Philip in turn
told Jesus.
23
Jesus replied,
“The hour has come
for the Son of Man
to be glorified.
24
Very truly I tell you,
unless
a kernel of wheat
falls to the ground
and dies,
it remains
only a single seed.
But if it dies,
it produces many seeds.
25
Anyone
who loves their life
will lose it,
while anyone who hates
their life
in this world
will keep it
for eternal life.
26
Whoever serves me
must follow me;
and where I am,
my servant also will be.
My Father will honor
the one who serves me.
27
“Now my soul is troubled,
and what shall I say?
‘Father, save me from this hour’?
No, it was for this very reason
I came to this hour.
28
Father,
glorify your name!”
Then
a voice
came from heaven,
“I have glorified it,
and will glorify it again.”
29
The crowd that was there
and heard it said
it had thundered;
others said
an angel had spoken to him.
30
Jesus said,
“This voice was
for your benefit,
not mine.
31
Now is the time
for judgment on this world;
now the prince of
this world will be driven out.
32
And I,
when I am lifted up
from the earth,
will draw all people to myself.”
33
He said this
to show the kind of death
he was going to die.
34
The crowd spoke up,
“We have heard from the Law
that the Messiah will remain
forever,
so how can you say,
‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’?
Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35
Then Jesus told them,
“You are going to have the light
just a little while longer.
Walk while you have the light,
before darkness overtakes you.
Whoever walks in the dark
does not know where they are going.
36
Believe in the light
while you have the light,
so that you may
become children of light.”
When he had finished speaking,
Jesus left and hid himself
from them.
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37
Even after
Jesus had performed
so many signs in their presence,
they still
would not believe in him.
38
This was to fulfill
the word of Isaiah the prophet:
“Lord,
who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of
the Lord been revealed?”
39
For this reason
they could not believe,
because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40
“He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see
with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41
Isaiah said this
because he saw Jesus’ glory
and spoke about him.
42
Yet at the same time
many even among the leaders
believed in him.
But because of the Pharisees
they would not openly acknowledge
their faith for fear they would be
put out of the synagogue;
43
for they loved
human praise
more than
praise from God.
44
Then Jesus cried out,
“Whoever believes in me
does not believe in me only,
but in the one who sent me.
45
The one
who looks at me is seeing
the one who sent me.
46
I have come
into the world as a light,
so that no one
who believes in me
should stay
in darkness.
47
“If anyone hears my words
but does not keep them,
I do not judge that person.
For I did not come to judge the world,
but to save the world.
48
There is a judge
for the one who rejects me
and does not accept my words;
the very words I have spoken will
condemn them
at the last day.
49
For I did not speak
on my own,
but the Father who sent me
commanded me to say
all that I have spoken.
50
I know that
his command
leads to
eternal life.
So whatever I say is just
what the Father has told me
to say.”

예수님의 발에 향유를 바름

유월절 엿새 전에
예수님은
전에 죽은 나사로를 살리신
베다니로 가셨다.
2
그 곳 사람들은
예수님을 위해 잔치를 베풀었는데
마르다는 시중을 들고
나사로는 예수님과 함께
식탁에 앉은 손님들과 자리를 같이하였다.
3
그때 마리아가
아주 값진 나아드 향유
약 300그램을 가지고 와서
예수님의 발에 붓고
자기 머리카락으로 닦아 드리자
온 집 안이 향유 냄새로 가득 찼다.
4
그러나
제자 중 하나이며
예수님을 팔아 넘길
가룟 유다가 이것을 보고
5
“왜 이 향유를
300데나리온에 팔아
가난한 사람들에게 주지 않았소?” 하였다.
6
그가 이렇게 말한 것은
가난한 사람들을 생각해서가 아니라
그는 돈궤를 맡고 있으면서
거기 있는 돈을 자주 훔쳐 내는
도둑이었기 때문이다.
7
그때 예수님이 말씀하셨다.
“내버려 두어라.
그녀가 이 향유를 간직해 둔 것은
내 장례를 위한 것이었다.
8
가난한 사람은
항상 너희와 함께 있으나
나는 너희와
항상 함께 있는 것이 아니다.”
9
수많은 유대인들이
예수님께서 거기에 계신다는
말을 듣고 몰려들었다.
그들은 예수님뿐만 아니라
죽었다가 다시 살아난 나사로도
보려고 온 것이다.
10
그러나
대제사장들은
나사로까지 죽일 계획을 세웠다.
11
이것은 나사로 때문에
많은 유대인들이
그들을 떠나
예수님을 믿기 때문이었다.
군중이 예수님을 환영함
12
이튿날에는
명절을 지키러 온 많은 군중들이
예수님께서 예루살렘으로 오신다는
말을 듣고
13
종려나무 가지를 꺾어 가지고
예수님을 맞으러 나가서
“호산나!
주의 이름으로 오시는 분,
이스라엘의 왕에게 찬양을!”
하고 외쳤다.
14
예수님은
어린 나귀를 타셨는데
이것은 성경에
15
“시온 사람들아,
두려워하지 말아라.
너희 왕이 나귀 새끼를 타고 오신다” 라고
기록되어 있기 때문이다.
16
제자들은
처음에는 이 일을 이해하지 못했다.
그러나 그들은
예수님이 영광을 받으신 후에야
이 말씀이 예수님에 대한 것이며
또 사람들이 예수님께 그 말씀대로 했다는 것을
깨닫게 되었다.
17
예수님이 죽은 나사로를
무덤에서 불러내어
다시 살리시는 것을 본 사람들이
계속 그 일을 증거하였다.
18
그래서 많은 사람들이
예수님께서
기적을 행하셨다는 말을 듣고 나와서
예수님을 맞아들였다.
19
그러자
바리새파 사람들이
“저것 보시오.
세상이 모두 저 사람을 따르고 있으니
이제는 다 틀렸소” 하고
서로 말하였다.
예수님이 자신의 죽음을 예언하시다
20
명절에
예배드리러 올라왔던 사람들 중에
그리스 사람들도 몇 명 있었다.
21
그들은
갈릴리 벳새다 사람 빌립에게 가서
예수님을 뵙게 해 달라고
간청하였다.
22
그래서 빌립이 안드레에게 가서 말하 여
안드레와 빌립이 예수님께
그 말을 전하였다.
23
그러자
예수님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“내가 영광을 받을 때가 왔다.
24
내가 분명히 너희에게 말한다.
한 알의 밀이
땅에 떨어져 죽지 않으면
한 알 그대로 있지만
그것이 죽으면
많은 열매를 맺는다.
25
자기 생명을 사랑하는 사람은
그 생명을 잃을 것이며
이 세상에서
자기 생명을 미워하는 사람은
그 생명을 영원히 보존할 것이다.
26
누구든지
나를 섬기고자 하면
나를 따라야 한다.
내가 있는 곳에
내 종도 있을 것이다.
누구든지 나를 섬기면
내 아버지께서 그를
귀하게 여기실 것이다.
27
“지금 내 마음이 몹시 괴로우니
무슨 말을 해야 할까?
‘아버지,
나를 구원하여
이 때를 피하게 해 주소서.
그러나 나는 이 일 때문에
이 때에 왔습니다.
28
아버지,
아버지의 이름을
영광스럽게 하소서.’ ”
바로 그때
하늘에서 이런 소리가 들려왔다.
“내가 이미 영광스럽게 하였고
다시 영광스럽게 할 것이다.”
29
그러자
곁에 서서 그 소리를 들은 사람들은
그것이 천둥 소리라고도 하였고
또 어떤 사람들은 천사가 예수님께
말한 것이라고도 하였다.
30
그래서 예수님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“이 소리가 난 것은 나를 위해서가 아니라
너희를 위해서이다.
31
지금은
이 세상이 심판받을 때이다.
이제 이 세상 임금인
사탄은 쫓겨날 것이다.
32
내가 땅에서 들리면
모든 사람을 이끌어 나에게 오게 하겠다.”
33
예수님은
자기가 어떤 죽음을 당할 것인가를
보여 주시기 위해서
이 말씀을 하셨다.
34
그때 군중들이 예수님께
“우리는 율법에서 그리스도가
영원히 계신다고 들었습니다.
그런데 어째서 선생님은
자신이 죽을 것이라고 하십니까?
그리스도란 도대체 누굽니까?” 하고 묻자
35
예수님이 이렇게 대답하셨다.
“아직 얼마 동안은
빛이 너희 가운데 있을 것이다.
어두움이 덮치기 전
아직 빛이 있을 동안에
빛 가운데 걸어라.
어둠 속을 걷는 사람은
자기가 어디로 가는지도 모른다.
36
너희에게
아직 빛이 있을 동안에
그 빛을 믿어라.
그러면
빛의 자녀가 될 것이다.”
예수님은
이 말씀을 하시고
그들을 떠나 몸을 숨기셨다.
37
예수님이
그렇게 많은 기적을
사람들 앞에서 베푸셨으나
그들은 예수님을 믿으려 하지 않았다.
38
그래서
“주여,
우리가 전한 것을 누가 믿었으며
주의 능력이 누구에게 나타났습니까?” 라고 한
예언자 이사야의 예언이
이루어졌다.
39
그들이 믿을 수 없었던 이유를
이사야는 또 이렇게 말하였다.
40
“주께서 그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고
그들의 마음을 무감각하게 하셨으니
이것은 그들이 눈으로 보고
마음으로 깨닫고 돌아와서
고침을 받지 못하게 하기 위해서였다.”
41
이사야는
주님의 영광을 보았기 때문에
예수님을 가리켜 그렇게 말하였다.
42
유대인 지도자들 가운데도
예수님을 믿는 사람들이 많았으나
바리새파 사람들이
회당에서 쫓아낼까 두려워
믿는다는 말을 못하고 있었다.
43
그들은
하나님이
주시는 영광보다
세상의 영광을
더 사랑했던 것이다.
44
예수님은
큰 소리로 이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“나를 믿는 사람은
나를 믿는 것이 아니라
나를 보내신 분을 믿는 것이며
45
나를 보는 사람은
나를 보내신 분을
보는 것이다.
46
나는 빛으로
세상에 왔기 때문에
나를 믿는 사람은
어둠 속에서 살지 않을 것이다.
47
누가 내 말을 듣고
지키지 않아도
나는 그를 심판하지 않는다.
나는 세상을 심판하려고 온 것이 아니라
세상을 구원하려고 왔다.
48
나를 저버리고
내 말을 받아들이지 않는 사람은
내가 한 바로 그 말에 의해서
마지막 날에
심판을 받을 것이다.
49
나는 내 생각대로 말하지 않고
나를 보내신 아버지께서
나에게 직접 명령하신 대로 말하였다.
50
나는 아버지의 명령이
영원한 생명임을 안다.
내가 하는 말은
아버지께서 나에게 말하라고
일러 주신 그대로이다.”
