John Chapter4

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

1

Now
Jesus learned that
the Pharisees had heard

that
he was gaining and
baptizing more disciples
than John—

2

although
in fact it was not Jesus
who baptized,
but his disciples.

3

So
he left Judea
and went back
once more to Galilee.

4

Now
he had to go through
Samaria.

5

So he came to a town
in Samaria called
Sychar,

near the plot of ground
Jacob had given to
his son
Joseph.

6

Jacob’s well was there,
and Jesus, tired as he was from
the journey,

sat down
by the well.

It was about noon.

7

When
a Samaritan woman
came to draw water,

Jesus said to her,

“Will you give me a drink?”

8

(His disciples had gone
into the town to buy food.)

9

The Samaritan woman
said to him,

“You are a Jew
and I am a Samaritan woman.

How can you ask me
for a drink?”

(For Jews do not associate
with Samaritans.)

10

Jesus
answered her,

“If you knew
the gift of God

and
who it is that asks you
for a drink,

you would
have asked him

and

he would

have given you

living water.”

11

“Sir,”
the woman said,

“you
have nothing
to draw with

and
the well is deep.

Where
can you get
this living water?

12

Are you
greater than
our father Jacob,

who gave us the well
and drank from it himself,

as did also his sons
and his livestock?”

13

Jesus answered,

“Everyone

who drinks this water

will be thirsty again,

14

but

whoever drinks

the water I give them

will never thirst.

Indeed,

the water I give them

will become in them

a spring of water

welling up to

eternal life.”

15

The woman
said to him,

“Sir,

give me this water

so that I won’t get thirsty

and have to keep
coming here to draw water.”

16

He told her,

“Go, call your husband
and come back.”

17

“I have no husband,”
she replied.

Jesus said to her,

“You are right
when you say you have
no husband.

18

The fact is,

you have had
five husbands,

and the man
you now have is not
your husband.

What you
have just said is
quite true.”

19

“Sir,”

the woman said,

“I can see that

you are a prophet.

20

Our ancestors
worshiped on this mountain,

but
you Jews
claim that the place
where we must worship is
in Jerusalem.”

21

“Woman,”

Jesus replied,

“believe me,

a time is coming

when you will worship

the Father

neither

on this mountain

nor in Jerusalem.

22

You
Samaritans
worship

what
you do not
know;

we
worship

what
we do know,

for
salvation is
from the Jews.

23

Yet a time is coming

and has now come

when

the true worshipers

will worship

the Father

in the Spirit

and in truth,

for they are
the kind of worshipers
the Father seeks.

24

God is spirit,

and his worshipers

must worship

in the Spirit

and

in truth.”

25

The woman said,

“I know that Messiah”
(called Christ) “
is coming.

When he comes,

he will explain

everything to us.”

26

Then
Jesus declared,

“I,

the one

speaking to you—

I am he.”

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27

Just then
his disciples returned

and
were surprised
to find him talking with
a woman.

But
no one asked,

“What do you want?”
or “Why are you talking
with her?”

28

Then,  leaving
her water jar,

the woman
went back to the town
and said to the people,

29

“Come,
see a man who told me
everything I ever did.

Could this be the Messiah?”

30

They
came out of the town

and
made their way
toward him.

31

Meanwhile
his disciples urged him,

“Rabbi, eat something.”

32

But he said to them,

“I have food to eat

that you know

nothing about.”

33

Then his disciples
said to each other,

“Could someone
have brought him
food?”

34

“My food,”

said Jesus,

“is to do

the will of him

who sent me

and

to finish his work.

35

Don’t you
have a saying,

‘It’s still four months
until harvest’?

I tell you,

open your eyes

and look at the fields!

They are ripe

for harvest.

36

Even now
the one who reaps
draws a wage

and harvests a crop
for eternal life,

so that the sower
and the reaper may be glad
together.

37

Thus the saying

‘One sows

and another reaps’

is true.

38

I sent you
to reap

what
you have not
worked for.

Others
have done
the hard work,

and
you have reaped
the benefits of their
labor.”

Many Samaritans Believe

39

Many
of the Samaritans
from that town

believed

in him

because of

the woman’s testimony,

“He told me

everything I ever did.”

40

So when
the Samaritans
came to him,

they
urged him to stay
with them,

and
he stayed two days.

41

And because of
his words

many more
became believers.

42

They said to the woman,

“We no longer

believe

just because of

what you said;

now
we have heard
for ourselves,

and

we know that

this man really is

the Savior of the world.”

 

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son

43

After
the two days
he left for Galilee.

44

(Now Jesus himself had pointed out
that a prophet has no honor
in his own country.)

45

When he
arrived in Galilee,

the Galileans
welcomed him.

They had seen

all that he had done

in Jerusalem

at the Passover Festival,

for they also

had been there.

46

Once more

he visited
Cana in Galilee,

where

he had turned

the water into wine.

And there was
a certain royal official
whose son lay sick at
Capernaum.

47

When this man
heard that Jesus had
arrived in Galilee
from Judea,

he went to him and

begged him to come and

heal his son,

who was

close to death.

48

“Unless
you people see signs
and wonders,”

Jesus told him,
“you will never
believe.”

49

The royal official said,

“Sir, come down
before my child dies.”

50

“Go,”

Jesus replied,

“your son will live.”

The man
took Jesus at his word
and departed.

51

While
he was still on the way,

his servants met him
with the news that

his boy was living.

52

When he inquired
as to the time when
his son got better,

they said to him,

“Yesterday,

at one in the afternoon,

the fever left him.”

53

Then
the father realized that

this was
the exact time

at which
Jesus had said to him,

“Your son will live.”

So

he

and his

whole household

believed.

54

This was the second sign

Jesus performed

after coming from Judea to Galilee

노력하지 아니한 것을

증언하므로

많은 사마리아인이
예수를 믿는지라

예수께 와서

자기들과 함께
유하시기를 청하니

거기서 이틀을 유하시매

말씀으로 말미암아

믿는 자가 더욱 많아

그 여자에게 말하되

우리가 믿는 것은
네 말로 인함이 아니니

이틀이 지나매
예수께서 거기를 떠나
갈릴리로 가시며

친히 증언하시기를
선지자가 고향에서는
높임을 받지 못한다 하시고

갈릴리에 이르시매

갈릴리인들이
그를 영접하니

이는 자기들도
명절에 갔다가

예수께서

명절 중 예루살렘에서 하신
모든 일을 보았음이더라

예수께서 다시
갈릴리 가나에 이르시니

전에 물로 포도주를
만드신 곳이라

왕의 신하가 있어
그의 아들이
가버나움에서
병들었더니

그가
예수께서 유대로부터
갈릴리로 오셨다는 것을
듣고

가서 청하되

내려오셔서

내 아들의 병을

고쳐 주소서 하니

그가 거의 죽게 되었음이라

보지 못하면 도무지 믿지
아니하리라

John Chapter 2

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

1

On the third day
a wedding took place
at Cana in Galilee.

Jesus’ mother was there,

2

and Jesus
and his disciples had
also been invited to
the wedding.

3

When
the wine was gone,

Jesus’ mother said to him,
“They have no more
wine.”

4

“Woman,
why do you involve me?”
Jesus replied.

“My hour
has not yet come.”

5

His mother said
to the servants,
“Do whatever he tells you.”

6

Nearby stood
six stone water jars,

the kind
used by the Jews
for ceremonial washing,

each holding
from twenty to thirty gallons.

7

Jesus said
to the servants,

“Fill
the jars with water”;

so they
filled them to the brim.

8

Then he told them,

“Now
draw some out
and take it to the master of
the banquet.”

They did so,

9

and
the master of
the banquet

tasted the water

that had been

turned into wine.

He did not realize
where it had come from,

though
the servants who had drawn
the water knew.

Then he called
the bridegroom aside

10

and said,

“Everyone brings out
the choice wine first

and then
the cheaper wine
after the guests have had
too much to drink;

but
you have saved
the best till now.”

11

What Jesus did
here in Cana of Galilee was
the first of the signs

through which

he revealed his glory;

and his disciples

believed in him.

12

After this
he went down to Capernaum

with
his mother and brothers
and his disciples.

There they stayed
for a few days.

Jesus Clears the Temple Courts

13

When it was
almost time for
the Jewish Passover,

Jesus went up to
Jerusalem.

14

In the temple courts

he found
people selling cattle, sheep
and doves,

and
others sitting
at tables exchanging
money.

15

So he made

a whip out of cords,

and

drove all from

the temple courts,

both

sheep and cattle;

he scattered the coins

of the money changers

and overturned their tables.

16

To those
who sold doves

he said,

“Get these out of here!

Stop

turning

my Father’s house

into a market!”

17

His disciples
remembered that it is written:

“Zeal for your house

will consume me.”

18

The Jews
then responded to him,

“What sign
can you show us to prove
your authority to do
all this?”

19

Jesus answered them,

“Destroy this temple,

and I will raise it again

in three days.”

20

They replied,
“It has taken forty-six years
to build this temple,

and
you are going to
raise it in three days?”

21

But

the temple

he had spoken of was

his body.

22

After

he was raised

from the dead,

his disciples
recalled what he had said.

Then they believed
the scripture and the words
that Jesus had spoken.

23

Now
while he was in Jerusalem
at the Passover Festival,

many people saw
the signs he was performing
and believed in his name.

24

But

Jesus would not

entrust himself to them,

for he knew all people.

25

He did not need

any testimony about mankind,

for he knew

what was in each person.

어디서 났는지 알지 못하되

물 떠온 하인들은
알더라

연회장이 신랑을 불러

말하되

사람마다
먼저 좋은 포도주를 내고

취한 후에
낮은 것을 내거늘

그대는 지금까지

좋은 포도주를
두었도다 하니라

예수께서

이 첫 표적을

갈릴리 가나에서 행하여

그의 영광을 나타내시매

제자들이 그를 믿으니라

그 후에

예수께서
그 어머니와 형제들과
제자들과 함께 가버나움으로
내려가셨으나

거기에
여러 날 계시지는
아니하시니라

성전을 깨끗하게 하시다

유대인의 유월절이
가까운지라

예수께서
예루살렘으로
올라가셨더니

성전 안에서

소와 양과
비둘기 파는 사람들과

돈 바꾸는 사람들이
앉아 있는 것을

보시고

노끈으로

채찍을 만드사

양이나 소를 다

성전에서 내쫓으시고

돈 바꾸는

사람들의 돈을

쏟으시며

상을 엎으시고

비둘기 파는
사람들에게 이르시되

이것을

여기서 가져가라

내 아버지의 집으로

장사하는 집을

만들지 말라 하시니

17

제자들이

성경 말씀에

주의 전을 사모하는 열심이

나를 삼키리라 한 것을

기억하더라

18

이에

유대인들이 대답하여

예수께 말하기를

네가 이런 일을 행하니
무슨 표적을 우리에게
보이겠느냐

19

예수께서

대답하여 이르시되

너희가 이 성전을 헐라

내가 사흘 동안에

일으키리라

20

유대인들이 이르되

이 성전은
사십육 년 동안에 지었거늘

네가 삼 일 동안에
일으키겠느냐 하더라

21

그러나

예수는

성전된 자기 육체를

가리켜 말씀하신

것이라

22

죽은 자 가운데서

살아나신 후에야

제자들이 이 말씀하신 것을

기억하고

성경과 예수께서 하신 말씀을

믿었더라

예수는 사람의 마음속을 아신다

23

유월절에

예수께서 예루살렘에 계시니
많은 사람이 그의 행하시는
표적을 보고

그의 이름을 믿었으나

24

예수는

그의 몸을

그들에게 의탁하지

아니하셨으니

이는

친히 모든 사람을
아심이요

25

또 사람에 대하여

누구의 증언도

받으실 필요가 없었으니

이는

그가 친히

사람의 속에 있는 것을

아셨음이니라
