John Chapter 14

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1

“Do not
let your hearts be
troubled.

You
believe in God;

believe
also in me.

2

My
Father’s house
has many rooms;

if
that were not so,

would
I have told you
that

I am
going there to prepare
a place for you?

3

And if I go
and prepare a place
for you,

I will come back and
take you to be with me

that
you also may be
where I am.

4

You know

the way to the place

where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father

5

Thomas
said to him,

“Lord,

we don’t know
where you are going,

so
how can we
know the way?”

6

Jesus answered,

“I am the way

and the truth

and the life.

No one
comes to the Father

except
through me.

 

7

If you
really know me,

you will know
my Father
as well.

From now on,

you do know him

and have seen him.”

8

Philip said,

“Lord,

show us the Father
and that will be enough
for us.”

9

Jesus answered:

“Don’t you know me,

Philip,
even after I have been
among you such a long time?

Anyone
who has seen me
has seen the Father.

How can you say,
‘Show us the Father’?

10

Don’t you believe
that I am in the Father,

and that
the Father is in me?

The words I say to you
I do not speak
on my own authority.

Rather,
it is the Father,
living in me,

who is
doing his work.

11

Believe me
when I say that

I am in the Father
and the Father is in me;

or at least

believe
on the evidence
of the works themselves.

 

12

Very truly I tell you,

whoever
believes in me
will do the works
I have been doing,

and
they will do
even greater things
than these,

because
I am going to the Father.

13

And

I will do

whatever you ask

in my name,

so that
the Father may be
glorified in the Son.

 

14

You may ask me

for anything in my name,

and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15

“If you love me,

keep my commands.

16

And I will ask the Father,

and he will give you

another advocate

to help you

and be with you

forever—

17

the Spirit of truth.

The world cannot

accept him,

because

it neither sees him

nor knows him.

But you know him,

for he lives with you

and will be in you.

 

18

I will not leave you

as orphans;

I will come to you.

19

Before long,

the world

will not see me anymore,

but

you will see me.

Because I live,

you also will live.

20

On that day

you will realize that

I am in my Father,

and you are in me,

and I am in you.

21

Whoever has my commands
and keeps them is the one
who loves me.

The one
who loves me will be
loved by my Father,

and I too will love them
and show myself
to them.”

22

Then Judas
(not Judas Iscariot) said,

“But, Lord,
why do you
intend to show yourself
to us

and
not to the world?”

 

23

Jesus replied,

“Anyone

who loves me

will obey my teaching.

My Father will love them,

and we will come to them

and make our home

with them.

24

Anyone
who does not
love me will not obey
my teaching.

These words
you hear are not my own;

they belong to the Father
who sent me.

25

“All this
I have spoken
while still with you.

26

But

the Advocate,

the Holy Spirit,

whom
the Father will send
in my name,

will teach you all things

and

will remind you

of everything

I have said to you.

27

Peace
I leave with you;

my peace I give you.

I do not
give to you
as the world gives.

Do not

let your hearts

be troubled

and

do not be afraid.

28

“You heard me say,

‘I am going away
and I am coming back to you.’

If you loved me,
you would be glad that
I am going to the Father,

for
the Father is
greater than I.

29

I have told you now
before it happens,

so that
when it does happen
you will believe.

30

I will not say
much more to you,

for
the prince of
this world is coming.

He has
no hold over me,

31

but
he comes so that
the world may learn that

I love
the Father

and
do exactly
what my Father has
commanded me.

너희는

마음에 근심하지 말라

하나님을 믿으니

또 나를 믿으라

14:2

내 아버지 집에

거할 곳이 많도다

그렇지 않으면
너희에게 일렀으리라

내가 너희를 위하여
거처를 예비하러 가노니

가서 너희를 위하여
거처를 예비하면

내가 다시 와서
너희를 내게로 영접하여
나 있는 곳에 너희도 있게 하리라

내가 어디로 가는지

그 길을 너희가 아느니라

도마가 이르되

주여
어디로 가시는지
우리가 알지 못하거늘

그 길을
어찌 알겠사옵나이까

14:6

예수께서
이르시되

내가 곧 길이요

진리요

생명이니

나로 말미암지 않고는

아버지께로 올 자가

없느니라

14:7

너희가 나를 알았더라면
내 아버지도 알았으리로다

이제부터는

너희가 그를 알았고
또 보았느니라

14:8

빌립이 이르되

주여
아버지를 우리에게
보여 주옵소서

그리하면 족하겠나이다

14:9

예수께서 이르시되

빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래
너희와 함께 있으되

네가 나를 알지 못하느냐
나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘

어찌하여
아버지를 보이라 하느냐

14:10

나는 아버지 안에 거하고
아버지는 내 안에 계신 것을
네가 믿지 아니하느냐

내가 너희에게 이르는 말은
스스로 하는 것이 아니라

아버지께서 내 안에 계셔서
그의 일을 하시는 것이라

14:11

내가 아버지 안에 거하고
아버지께서 내 안에 계심을 믿으라

그렇지 못하겠거든
행하는 그 일로 말미암아

나를 믿으라

14:12

내가 진실로 진실로
너희에게 이르노니

나를 믿는 자는

내가 하는 일을

그도 할 것이요

또한

그보다 큰 일도 하리니

이는 내가 아버지께로 감이라

14:13

너희가 내 이름으로

무엇을 구하든지

내가 행하리니

이는 아버지로 하여금
아들로 말미암아 영광을 받으시게
하려 함이라

14:14

내 이름으로

무엇이든지

내게 구하면

내가 행하리라

14:15

너희가 나를 사랑하면

나의 계명을 지키리라

14:16

내가 아버지께 구하겠으니

그가 또 다른 보혜사를

너희에게 주사

영원토록

너희와 함께 있게 하리니

14:17

그는 진리의 영이라

세상은 능히 그를 받지 못하나니

이는 그를 보지도 못하고

알지도 못함이라

그는 너희와 함께 거하심이요

또 너희 속에 계시겠음이라

내가 너희를

고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고

너희에게로 오리라

조금 있으면

세상은 다시

나를 보지 못할 것이로되

너희는 나를 보리니

이는 내가 살아 있고

너희도 살아 있겠음이라

그 날에는

내가 아버지 안에,

너희가 내 안에,

내가 너희 안에 있는 것을

너희가 알리라

나의 계명을 지키는 자라야

나를 사랑하는 자니

나를 사랑하는 자는

내 아버지께 사랑을 받을 것이요

나도 그를 사랑하여

그에게 나를 나타내리라

14:22

가룟인 아닌 유다가 이르되

주여 어찌하여
자기를 우리에게는 나타내시고
세상에는 아니하려 하시나이까

14:23

예수께서
대답하여 이르시되

사람이 나를 사랑하면
내 말을 지키리니

내 아버지께서
그를 사랑하실 것이요

우리가

그에게 가서

거처를 그와 함께 하리라

14:24

나를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는

내 말을 지키지 아니하나니

너희가 듣는 말은

내 말이 아니요

나를 보내신 아버지의

말씀이니라

너희와 함께 있어서
이 말을 너희에게 하였거니와

보혜사

곧 아버지께서
내 이름으로 보내실

성령

그가 너희에게
모든 것을 가르치고

내가 너희에게 말한
모든 것을 생각나게 하리라

14:27

평안을 너희에게 끼치노니
곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라

내가 너희에게 주는 것은
세상이 주는 것 같지 아니하니라

너희는 마음에 근심하지도 말고

두려워하지도 말라

14:28

내가 갔다가
너희에게로 온다 하는 말을
너희가 들었나니

나를 사랑하였더라면
내가 아버지께로 감을
기뻐하였으리라

아버지는 나보다
크심이니라

14:29

이제 일이 일어나기 전에
너희에게 말한 것은

일이 일어날 때에
너희로 믿게 하려 함이라

14:30

이 후에는
내가 너희와 말을 많이 하지
아니하리니

이 세상의 임금이
오겠음이라

그러나 그는
내게 관계할 것이 없으니

14:31

오직 내가
아버지를 사랑하는 것과

아버지께서
명하신 대로 행하는 것을

세상이 알게 하려
함이로라

일어나라
여기를 떠나자 하시니라

John Chapter 13

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

1

It was
just before
the Passover Festival.

Jesus knew
that the hour had come
for him to leave this world

and
go to the Father.

Having loved

his own who were

in the world,

he loved them

to the end.

2

The evening meal was
in progress,

and
the devil had
already prompted

Judas,

the son of Simon
Iscariot,

to betrayJesus.

 

3

Jesus knew

that the Father had put

all things under his power,

and that

he had
come from God

and was
returning to God;

4

so he got up
from the meal,

took off
his outer clothing,

and
wrapped a towel
around his waist.

 

5

After that,
he poured water into
a basin

and
began to wash
his disciples’ feet,

drying them
with the towel that was
wrapped around him.

6

He came to
Simon Peter,

who said to him,

“Lord,
are you going to
wash my feet?”

7

Jesus replied,

“You do not realize now
what I am doing,

but later
you will understand.”

 

8

“No,”
said Peter,

“you shall never
wash my feet.”

Jesus answered,

“Unless
I wash you,

you have no part
with me.”

 

9

“Then, Lord,”
Simon Peter replied,

“not just my feet
but my hands and my head
as well!”

10

Jesus answered,

“Those who
have had a bath
need only to wash their
feet;

their
whole body is clean.
And you are clean,

though

not every one

of you.”

11

For he knew

who was going to
betray him,

and that was why

he said not every one
was clean.

 

12

When
he had finished washing
their feet,

he put on
his clothes and returned
to his place.

“Do you understand
what I have done for you?”

he asked them.

13

“You call me

‘Teacher’ and

‘Lord,’

and rightly so,

for that is

what I am.

14

Now that
I, your Lord and Teacher,

have washed your feet,

you also should wash

one another’s feet.

 

15

I have set you an example

that you should do

as I have done for you.

16

Very truly I tell you,

no servant

is greater than

his master,

nor is a messenger

greater than

the one who sent him.

17

Now that you know
these things,

you will be blessed
if you do them.

 

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18

“I am not referring to all of you;
I know those I have chosen.

But this is to fulfill
this passage of Scripture:

‘He who

shared my bread has

turned against me.’

19

“I am telling you now
before it happens,

so that when it does happen

you will believe that

I am who I am.

20

Very truly I tell you,

whoever

accepts anyone I send

accepts me;

and

whoever accepts me

accepts the one

who sent me.”

21

After he had said this,

Jesus was
troubled in spirit and testified,

“Very truly I tell you,

one of you

is going to betray

me.”

22

His disciples
stared at one another,

at a loss to know

which of them he meant.

23

One of them,
the disciple whom Jesus loved,
was reclining next to him.

24

Simon Peter
motioned to this disciple

and said,

“Ask him
which one he means.”

25

Leaning back
against Jesus, he asked him,

“Lord, who is it?”

 

26

Jesus answered,

“It is the one

to whom I will give

this piece of bread

when I have dipped it in the dish.”

Then,
dipping the piece of bread,

he gave it to

Judas,

the son of Simon

Iscariot.

 

27

As soon as
Judas took the bread,

Satan
entered into him.

So Jesus told him,

“What you are about to do,

do quickly.”

28

But
no one at the meal
understood why Jesus said
this to him.

29

Since
Judas had charge of
the money,

some thought
Jesus was telling him to buy
what was needed for the festival,

or to give
something to the poor.

30

As soon as
Judas had taken
the bread,

he went out.

And it was night.

 

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

 

31

When he was gone,
Jesus said,

“Now
the Son of Man
is glorified

and

God is glorified
in him.

32

If
God is
glorified in him,

God will glorify
the Son in himself,

and
will glorify him
at once.

33

“My children,

I will be with you

only a little longer.

You will look for me,

and just as I told the Jews,

so I tell you now:

Where I am going,

you cannot come.

34

“A new command
I give you:

Love one another.

As I have loved you,

so you must

love one another.

35

By this

everyone will know

that you are my disciples,

if you love one another.”

36

Simon Peter
asked him,

“Lord,
where are you going?”

Jesus replied,

“Where I am going,
you cannot follow now,

but you will follow later.”

37

Peter asked,

“Lord, why can’t I
follow you now?

I will lay down
my life for you.”

38

Then Jesus answered,

“Will you really
lay down your life for me?

Very truly I tell you,

before

the rooster crows,

you will

disown me

three times!

가룟 유다의 마음에

예수를 팔려는 생각을 넣었더니

저녁 먹는 중

예수는

자기 손에 맡기신 것과

하나님께로부터 오셨다가
하나님께로 돌아가실 것을 아시고

저녁 잡수시던 자리에서 일어나
겉옷을 벗고 수건을 가져다가
허리에 두르시고

이에
대야에 물을 떠서
제자들의 발을 씻으시고

그 두르신 수건으로
닦기를 시작하여

이르시니

베드로가 이르되

주여
주께서 내 발을
씻으시나이까

예수께서
대답하여 이르시되

내가 하는 것을
네가 지금은 알지 못하나
이후에는 알리라

베드로가 이르되

내 발을 절대로
씻지 못하시리이다

예수께서 대답하시되

내가

너를 씻어 주지 아니하면

예수께서 이르시되

이미 목욕한 자는

자기를 팔 자가 누구인지
아심이라

그들의 발을 씻으신 후에

선생이라 또는

주라 하니

내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어

무슨 뜻으로 하셨는지

그 앉은 자 중에
아는 자가 없고

어떤 이들은
유다가 돈궤를 맡았으므로

명절에 우리가 쓸 물건을
사라 하시는지

혹은
가난한 자들에게
무엇을 주라 하시는 줄로
생각하더라

유다가 그 조각을 받고

곧 나가니 밤이러라

 

예수께서 베드로가 부인할 것을 예언하심

그가 나간 후에

예수께서 이르시되

지금 인자가 영광을 받았고

하나님도 인자로 말미암아

영광을 받으셨도다

만일 하나님이

그로 말미암아
영광을 받으셨으면

자기로 말미암아

그에게 영광을 주시리니
곧 주시리라

내가 아직 잠시 너희와 함께
있겠노라

John Chapter 12

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

12

Six days
before the Passover,

Jesus
came to Bethany,

where
Lazarus lived,

whom
Jesus had raised
from the dead.

2

Here
a dinner was given
in Jesus’ honor.

Martha served,

while
Lazarus was
among those reclining
at the table with him.

3

Then
Mary took about a pint of
pure nard,

an expensive perfume;

she poured it on Jesus’ feet
and wiped his feet with her hair.

And
the house was filled with
the fragrance of the perfume.

4

But
one of his disciples,

Judas Iscariot,

who
was later to betray him,
objected,

5

“Why wasn’t this
perfume sold and the money
given to the poor?

It was worth a year’s wages.”

6

He did not say this
because he cared about the poor

but because

he was a thief;

as keeper
of the money bag,

he used to

help himself

to what was put into it.

7

“Leave her alone,”

Jesus replied. “

It was intended that

she should save this perfume

for the day of my burial.

 

8

You will always have

the poor among you,

but you will not always

have me.”

9

Meanwhile
a large crowd of Jews
found out that Jesus was there
and came,

not only
because of him

but also
to see Lazarus,
whom he had raised from
the dead.

10

So
the chief priests

made plans to kill

Lazarus as well,

11

for on account of him

many of the Jews were

going over to Jesus

and believing in him.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

12

The next day

the great crowd that had come
for the festival heard that

Jesus was
on his way to Jerusalem.

13

They took palm branches
and went out to meet him,
shouting,

“Hosanna!”

“Blessed is he who comes

in the name of the Lord!”

“Blessed is the king of Israel!”

14

Jesus
found a young donkey
and sat on it,

as it is written:

15

“Do not be afraid,

Daughter Zion;

see,

your king is coming,

seated on a donkey’s colt.”

 

16

At first
his disciples did not
understand all this.

Only after
Jesus was glorified
did they realize

that
these things
had been written
about him

and that
these things had been
done to him.

17

Now the crowd that was with him

when he called Lazarus from the tomb

and raised him from the dead

continued to spread

the word.

 

18

Many people,

because they had heard that
he had performed this sign,

went out to meet him.

19

So

the Pharisees

said to one another,

“See,

this is getting us nowhere.

Look how the whole world

has gone after him!”

 

Jesus Predicts His Death

 

20

Now there were
some Greeks among those who
went up to worship at the festival.

21

They came to Philip,
who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,
with a request.

“Sir,” they said,
“we would like to see Jesus.”

22

Philip went to tell Andrew;
Andrew and Philip in turn
told Jesus.

23

Jesus replied,

“The hour has come

for the Son of Man

to be glorified.

24

Very truly I tell you,

unless

a kernel of wheat

falls to the ground

and dies,

it remains

only a single seed.

But if it dies,

it produces many seeds.

25

Anyone

who loves their life

will lose it,

while anyone who hates

their life

in this world

will keep it

for eternal life.

Whoever serves me

must follow me;

and where I am,

my servant also will be.

My Father will honor

the one who serves me.

“Now my soul is troubled,

and what shall I say?

‘Father, save me from this hour’?

No, it was for this very reason

I came to this hour.

28

Father,

glorify your name!”

Then

a voice

came from heaven,

“I have glorified it,

and will glorify it again.”

 

29

The crowd that was there

and heard it said

it had thundered;

others said

an angel had spoken to him.

30

Jesus said,

“This voice was

for your benefit,

not mine.

31

Now is the time
for judgment on this world;

now the prince of
this world will be driven out.

32

And I,

when I am lifted up

from the earth,

will draw all people to myself.”

 

33

He said this

to show the kind of death

he was going to die.

34

The crowd spoke up,

“We have heard from the Law
that the Messiah will remain
forever,

so how can you say,
‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’?
Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35

Then Jesus told them,

“You are going to have the light

just a little while longer.

Walk while you have the light,

before darkness overtakes you.

Whoever walks in the dark

does not know where they are going.

36

Believe in the light

while you have the light,

so that you may

become children of light.”

When he had finished speaking,
Jesus left and hid himself
from them.

 

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37

Even after
Jesus had performed
so many signs in their presence,

they still
would not believe in him.

38

This was to fulfill
the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord,

who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of

the Lord been revealed?”

39

For this reason
they could not believe,
because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40

“He has blinded their eyes

and hardened their hearts,

so they can neither see

with their eyes,

nor understand with their hearts,

nor turn—and I would heal them.”

41

Isaiah said this

because he saw Jesus’ glory

and spoke about him.

42

Yet at the same time

many even among the leaders

believed in him.

But because of the Pharisees

they would not openly acknowledge

their faith for fear they would be

put out of the synagogue;

43

for they loved

human praise

more than

praise from God.

 

44

Then Jesus cried out,

“Whoever believes in me

does not believe in me only,

but in the one who sent me.

45

The one

who looks at me is seeing

the one who sent me.

46

I have come
into the world as a light,

so that no one

who believes in me

should stay

in darkness.

 

47

“If anyone hears my words

but does not keep them,

I do not judge that person.

For I did not come to judge the world,

but to save the world.

48

There is a judge

for the one who rejects me

and does not accept my words;

the very words I have spoken will

condemn them

at the last day.

49

For I did not speak

on my own,

but the Father who sent me

commanded me to say

all that I have spoken.

50

I know that

his command

leads to

eternal life.

So whatever I say is just

what the Father has told me

to say.”

 

 

요한복음 12장

예수님의 발에 향유를 바름

유월절 엿새 전에

예수님은
전에 죽은 나사로를 살리신

베다니로 가셨다.

그 곳 사람들은
예수님을 위해 잔치를 베풀었는데

마르다는 시중을 들고

나사로는 예수님과 함께
식탁에 앉은 손님들과 자리를 같이하였다.

3

그때 마리아가
아주 값진 나아드 향유
약 300그램을 가지고 와서

예수님의 발에 붓고

자기 머리카락으로 닦아 드리자

온 집 안이 향유 냄새로 가득 찼다.

4

그러나
제자 중 하나이며

예수님을 팔아 넘길

가룟 유다가 이것을 보고

 

5

“왜 이 향유를
300데나리온에 팔아
가난한 사람들에게 주지 않았소?” 하였다.

6

그가 이렇게 말한 것은
가난한 사람들을 생각해서가 아니라

그는 돈궤를 맡고 있으면서
거기 있는 돈을 자주 훔쳐 내는
도둑이었기 때문이다.

 

7

그때 예수님이 말씀하셨다.

“내버려 두어라.

그녀가 이 향유를 간직해 둔 것은

내 장례를 위한 것이었다.

8

가난한 사람은

항상 너희와 함께 있으나

나는 너희와

항상 함께 있는 것이 아니다.”

9

수많은 유대인들이
예수님께서 거기에 계신다는
말을 듣고 몰려들었다.

그들은 예수님뿐만 아니라
죽었다가 다시 살아난 나사로도
보려고 온 것이다.

10

그러나

대제사장들은

나사로까지 죽일 계획을 세웠다.

11

이것은 나사로 때문에

많은 유대인들이

그들을 떠나

예수님을 믿기 때문이었다.

 

군중이 예수님을 환영함

12

이튿날에는
명절을 지키러 온 많은 군중들이
예수님께서 예루살렘으로 오신다는
말을 듣고

13

종려나무 가지를 꺾어 가지고
예수님을 맞으러 나가서

“호산나!

주의 이름으로 오시는 분,

이스라엘의 왕에게 찬양을!”

하고 외쳤다.

 

14

예수님은

어린 나귀를 타셨는데

이것은 성경에

15

“시온 사람들아,

두려워하지 말아라.

너희 왕이 나귀 새끼를 타고 오신다” 라고

기록되어 있기 때문이다.

 

16

제자들은
처음에는 이 일을 이해하지 못했다.

그러나 그들은
예수님이 영광을 받으신 후에야

이 말씀이 예수님에 대한 것이며

또 사람들이 예수님께 그 말씀대로 했다는 것을

깨닫게 되었다.

17

예수님이 죽은 나사로를

무덤에서 불러내어

다시 살리시는 것을 본 사람들이

계속 그 일을 증거하였다.

 

18

그래서 많은 사람들이

예수님께서

기적을 행하셨다는 말을 듣고 나와서

예수님을 맞아들였다.

19

그러자

바리새파 사람들이

“저것 보시오.

세상이 모두 저 사람을 따르고 있으니

이제는 다 틀렸소” 하고

서로 말하였다.

 

예수님이 자신의 죽음을 예언하시다

20

명절에
예배드리러 올라왔던 사람들 중에
그리스 사람들도 몇 명 있었다.

21

그들은
갈릴리 벳새다 사람 빌립에게 가서
예수님을 뵙게 해 달라고
간청하였다.

22

그래서 빌립이 안드레에게 가서 말하 여
안드레와 빌립이 예수님께
그 말을 전하였다.

23

그러자
예수님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

“내가 영광을 받을 때가 왔다.

24

내가 분명히 너희에게 말한다.

한 알의 밀이

땅에 떨어져 죽지 않으면

한 알 그대로 있지만

그것이 죽으면

많은 열매를 맺는다.

25

자기 생명을 사랑하는 사람은

그 생명을 잃을 것이며

이 세상에서

자기 생명을 미워하는 사람은

그 생명을 영원히 보존할 것이다.

 

26

누구든지

나를 섬기고자 하면

나를 따라야 한다.

내가 있는 곳에

내 종도 있을 것이다.

누구든지 나를 섬기면

내 아버지께서 그를

귀하게 여기실 것이다.

27

“지금 내 마음이 몹시 괴로우니

무슨 말을 해야 할까?

‘아버지,

나를 구원하여

이 때를 피하게 해 주소서.

그러나 나는 이 일 때문에

이 때에 왔습니다.

 

28

아버지,

아버지의 이름을

영광스럽게 하소서.’ ”

바로 그때

하늘에서 이런 소리가 들려왔다.

“내가 이미 영광스럽게 하였고

다시 영광스럽게 할 것이다.”

그러자
곁에 서서 그 소리를 들은 사람들은

그것이 천둥 소리라고도 하였고

또 어떤 사람들은 천사가 예수님께

말한 것이라고도 하였다.

30

그래서 예수님이 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

“이 소리가 난 것은 나를 위해서가 아니라

너희를 위해서이다.

31

지금은
이 세상이 심판받을 때이다.

이제 이 세상 임금인
사탄은 쫓겨날 것이다.

 

32

내가 땅에서 들리면

모든 사람을 이끌어 나에게 오게 하겠다.”

33

예수님은

자기가 어떤 죽음을 당할 것인가를

보여 주시기 위해서

이 말씀을 하셨다.

34

그때 군중들이 예수님께

“우리는 율법에서 그리스도가
영원히 계신다고 들었습니다.

그런데 어째서 선생님은
자신이 죽을 것이라고 하십니까?

그리스도란 도대체 누굽니까?” 하고 묻자

35

예수님이 이렇게 대답하셨다.

“아직 얼마 동안은

빛이 너희 가운데 있을 것이다.

어두움이 덮치기 전

아직 빛이 있을 동안에

빛 가운데 걸어라.

어둠 속을 걷는 사람은

자기가 어디로 가는지도 모른다.

너희에게

아직 빛이 있을 동안에

그 빛을 믿어라.

그러면

빛의 자녀가 될 것이다.”

예수님은
이 말씀을 하시고
그들을 떠나 몸을 숨기셨다.

37

예수님이
그렇게 많은 기적을
사람들 앞에서 베푸셨으나

그들은 예수님을 믿으려 하지 않았다.

38

그래서

“주여,

우리가 전한 것을 누가 믿었으며

주의 능력이 누구에게 나타났습니까?” 라고 한

예언자 이사야의 예언이

이루어졌다.

 

39

그들이 믿을 수 없었던 이유를
이사야는 또 이렇게 말하였다.

40

“주께서 그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고

그들의 마음을 무감각하게 하셨으니

이것은 그들이 눈으로 보고

마음으로 깨닫고 돌아와서

고침을 받지 못하게 하기 위해서였다.”

41

이사야는

주님의 영광을 보았기 때문에

예수님을 가리켜 그렇게 말하였다.

42

유대인 지도자들 가운데도

예수님을 믿는 사람들이 많았으나

바리새파 사람들이

회당에서 쫓아낼까 두려워

믿는다는 말을 못하고 있었다.

43

그들은

하나님이

주시는 영광보다

세상의 영광을

더 사랑했던 것이다.

 

44

예수님은
큰 소리로 이렇게 말씀하셨다.

“나를 믿는 사람은

나를 믿는 것이 아니라

나를 보내신 분을 믿는 것이며

45

나를 보는 사람은

나를 보내신 분을

보는 것이다.

46

나는 빛으로

세상에 왔기 때문에

나를 믿는 사람은

어둠 속에서 살지 않을 것이다.

 

47

누가 내 말을 듣고

지키지 않아도

나는 그를 심판하지 않는다.

나는 세상을 심판하려고 온 것이 아니라

세상을 구원하려고 왔다.

 

48

나를 저버리고

내 말을 받아들이지 않는 사람은

내가 한 바로 그 말에 의해서

마지막 날에

심판을 받을 것이다.

49

나는 내 생각대로 말하지 않고

나를 보내신 아버지께서

나에게 직접 명령하신 대로 말하였다.

50

나는 아버지의 명령이

영원한 생명임을 안다.

내가 하는 말은

아버지께서 나에게 말하라고

일러 주신 그대로이다.”

John Chapter 11

 

The Death of Lazarus

11

Now
a man named Lazarus
was sick.

He
was from Bethany,
the village of Mary and
her sister Martha.

2

(This Mary,

whose
brother Lazarus
now lay sick,

was
the same one
who poured perfume on the Lord
and wiped his feet
with her hair.)

 

3

So the sisters sent
word to Jesus,

“Lord,

the one you love is sick.”

4

When he heard this,
Jesus said,

“This sickness
will not end in death.

No,
it is for God’s glory

so that

God’s Son may be

glorified through it.”

5

Now
Jesus loved Martha
and her sister and
Lazarus.

6

So when he heard that
Lazarus was sick,

he stayed
where he was two more days,

7

and then
he said to his disciples,

“Let us go back to Judea.”

8

“But Rabbi,”
they said, “

a short while ago
the Jews there tried to
stone you,

and yet
you are going back?”

9

Jesus answered,
“Are there not twelve hours of
daylight?

Anyone
who walks in the daytime
will not stumble,

for they see
by this world’s light.

10

It is when a person walks
at night that they stumble,

for they have no light.”

11

After he had said this,
he went on to tell them,

“Our friend

Lazarus has fallen asleep;

but I am going there

to wake him up.”

12

His disciples replied,

“Lord, if he sleeps,

he will get better.”

13

Jesus had been

speaking of

his death,

but
his disciples thought
he meant natural
sleep.

14

So then

he told them plainly,

“Lazarus is dead,

 

15

and for your sake

I am glad I was not there,

so that you may believe.

But let us go to him.”

16

Then Thomas
(also known as Didymus) said
to the rest of the disciples,

“Let us also go,
that we may die with him.”

 

Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

17

On his arrival,

Jesus

found that

Lazarus had already been

in the tomb for

four days.

18

Now
Bethany was
less than two miles from
Jerusalem,

19

and
many Jews had come to
Martha and Mary to comfort them
in the loss of their brother.

20

When
Martha heard that
Jesus was coming,

she
went out to meet him,

but
Mary stayed at home.

21

“Lord,”
Martha said to Jesus,

“if you had been here,

my brother

would not have

died.

 

22

But
I know that
even now God will give you
whatever you ask.”

23

Jesus said to her,

“Your brother will

rise again.”

24

Martha answered,

“I know he will rise again

in the resurrection

at the last day.”

25

Jesus said to her,

“I am the resurrection

and

the life.

The one

who believes in me

will live,

even though

they die;

26

and

whoever

lives by

believing in me

will never die.

Do you believe this?”

27

“Yes, Lord,” she replied,

“I believe that
you are the Messiah,

the Son of God,
who is to come into the world.”

28

After she had said this,
she went back and called
her sister Mary aside.

“The Teacher is here,”
she said,

“and
is asking for you.”

29

When Mary heard this,
she got up quickly
and went to him.

30

Now
Jesus had not yet
entered the village,

but was still at the place
where Martha had met him.

31

When
the Jews
who had been with Mary
in the house, comforting her,

noticed
how quickly she got up
and went out,

they followed her,

supposing
she was going to
the tomb to mourn there.

32

When
Mary reached the place
where Jesus was and saw him,

she
fell at his feet and said,

“Lord, if you had been here,

my brother

would not have died.”

33

When
Jesus saw her weeping,

and the Jews
who had come along with her
also weeping,

he was
deeply moved
in spirit

and troubled.

34

“Where
have you laid him?”
he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,”
they replied.

35

Jesus wept.

36

Then
the Jews said,

“See
how he loved him!”

37

But
some of them said,

“Could not
he who opened the eyes of
the blind man have kept
this man from dying?”

 

Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead

 

 

38

Jesus,
once more deeply moved,
came to the tomb.

It was a cave
with a stone laid across
the entrance.

 

39

“Take away the stone,”
he said.

“But, Lord,”

said Martha, the sister
of the dead man,

“by this time

there is a bad odor,

for he has been there

four days.”

 

40

Then Jesus said,

“Did I not tell you

that if you believe,

you will see the glory of

God?”

41

So they
took away the stone.

Then
Jesus looked up
and said,

“Father,

I thank you that

you have heard me.

42

I knew that
you always hear me,

but I said this
for the benefit of the people
standing here,

that
they may believe

that
you sent me.”

43

When
he had said this,

Jesus called

in a loud voice,

“Lazarus, come out!”

 

44

The dead man

came out,

his hands
and feet wrapped with
strips of linen,

and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them,

“Take off

the grave clothes

and let him go.”

 

The Plot to Kill Jesus

 

45

Therefore
many of the Jews
who had come to visit Mary,

and
had seen what Jesus did,
believed in him.

46

But
some of them
went to the Pharisees

and
told them
what Jesus had done.

47

Then

the chief priests

and the Pharisees

called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.

“What are we accomplishing?”
they asked.

“Here is this man
performing many signs.

 

48

If we let him go on like this,
everyone will believe in him,

and then

the Romans

will come

and take away

both our temple

and our nation.”

49

Then one of them,
named Caiaphas, who was
high priest that year, spoke up,

“You know nothing at all!

50

You do not realize that

it is better for you that

one man die for the people

than that the whole nation perish.”

 

51

He did not say this

on his own,

but

as high priest that year

he prophesied that

Jesus would die for

the Jewish nation,

52

and

not only for that nation

but also

for the scattered

children of God,

to bring them together

and make them one.

53

So from that day on
they plotted to take his life.

54

Therefore
Jesus no longer
moved about publicly
among the people of Judea.

Instead

he withdrew to
a region near the wilderness,
to a village called Ephraim,

where he stayed with
his disciples.

55

When
it was almost time
for the Jewish Passover,

many
went up from the country
to Jerusalem

for

their ceremonial
cleansing before
the Passover.

56

They kept looking
for Jesus,

and
as they stood
in the temple courts

they
asked one another,

“What do you think?

Isn’t he coming
to the festival at all?”

57

But
the chief priests
and the Pharisees had given
orders

that
anyone who found out
where Jesus was should report it

so that
they might arrest him.

나사로가 병들었다는 말을 들으시고
계시던 곳에서 이틀을 더 머무시다가

제자들에게
“다시 유대로 가자” 하고
말씀하셨다.

제자들이 예수님께

“선생님, 얼마 전에도
유대인들이 선생님을 돌로
치려고 했는데

또 그리로
가려고 하십니까?” 하자

예수님이 대답하셨다.

“낮은 열두 시간이 아니냐?

누구든지 낮에 다니는 사람은
이 세상 빛을 보기 때문에
걸려 넘어지지 않지만

10

밤에 다니면
그 사람에게 빛이 없으므로
걸려 넘어진다.”

11

예수님은
이 말씀을 하신 후

그들에게

“우리 친구

나사로가 잠들었다.

그러나

내가 그를 깨우러 간다”

하고 말씀하셨다.

12

그때 제자들이

“주님, 그가 잠들었으면

나을 것입니다” 하였다.

13

예수님은

나사로가

죽은 것을 가리켜

말씀하셨으나

제자들은

그저 잠들어

쉬고 있는 것으로 생각하였다.

14

그래서

예수님이 제자들에게
분명하게 말씀해
주셨다.

“나사로는 죽었다.

15

너희를 위해
내가 거기 없었던 것을
나는 기뻐한다.

이것은
너희가 믿도록 하기 위해서이다.

그러나 이제
그에게로 가자.”

16

그때
디두모라는 도마가
다른 제자들에게

“우리도 예수님과 함께
죽으러 가자” 하였다.

 

예수께서 나사로의 누이들을 위로하시다

17

예수님이
그 곳에 도착해서 보니

나사로가 무덤에 묻힌 지

이미 4일이나 되었다.

18

베다니는
예루살렘에서 3킬로미터
조금 못 되는 가까운 곳이었다.

19

많은 유대인들이
오빠의 죽음을 슬퍼하는
마르다와 마리아를 위로하러
와 있었다.

20

마르다는
예수님이 오신다는 말을 듣고

마중을 나갔으나
마리아는 집에 있었다.

21

마르다는
예수님께 이렇게 말하였다.

“주님께서 여기 계셨더라면
제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 거예요.

 

22

그러나 저는

지금이라도

주님이 구하시는 것은

무엇이든지

하나님이 주실 것으로 압니다.”

23

“네 오빠가

다시 살아날 것이다.”

24

“마지막 날 부활 때에

오빠가 다시 살아나리라는 것은

저도 알고 있습니다.”

 

25

“나는 부활이며 생명이다.

나를 믿는 사람은

죽어도 살 것이며

26

누구든지

살아서 나를 믿는 사람은

영원히 죽지 않을 것이다.

네가 이것을 믿느냐?”

27

“예, 주님.

저는 주님이

세상에 오실 그리스도시며

하나님의 아들이심을 믿습니다.”

28

이 말을 하고서
마르다는 집으로 돌아가

동생 마리아를 조용히 불러
“선생님이 오셔서 너를 찾으신다” 하고
일러 주었다.

29

마리아는 이 말을 듣고
급히 일어나 예수님에게로 갔다.

30

예수님은
아직 마을에 들어오시지 않고

마르다가
마중 나갔던 곳에
그대로 계셨다.

31

집에서
마리아를 위로하던
유대인들은

마리아가
급히 일어나 나가는 것을
보고

울려고
무덤으로 가는 줄 알고
뒤따라 나갔다.

32

마리아는
예수님이 계신 곳에
이르러

예수님을 뵙고
그 앞에 엎드려

“주님이 여기 계셨더라면

제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 거예요”

하고 말하였다.

33

예수님은
마리아가 울고 또 그녀와 함께 온
유대인들까지 우는 것을 보시고
몹시 안타까워하시며

34

“그를 어디 두었느냐?”

하고 물으셨다.

그들이

“주님, 와서 보십시오” 하자

35

예수님은
눈물을 흘리셨다.

36

그때 유대인들은

“저것 보시오.

나사로를 무척이나

사랑했던 모양이오” 하였고

37

그들 중 어떤 사람은

“소경의 눈을 뜨게 한 그가

이 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었던가?”

하였다.

 

예수께서 죽은  나사로를 살려주시다

38

예수님은
다시 탄식하시며
무덤으로 가셨다.

무덤은 동굴이었으며

입구는 돌로 막혀 있었다.

39

예수님이

“돌을 옮겨 놓아라”

하시자

죽은 사람의 누이
마르다가

“주님,

죽은 지가

4일이나 되었으니

냄새가 날 것입니다”

하였다.

 

40

그래서 예수님은
마르다에게

“네가

믿기만 하면

하나님의 영광을

보게 될 것이라고

내가 말하지 않았느냐?”

하고 말씀하셨다.

41

사람들이

돌을 옮겨 놓자

예수님은 하늘을 우러러보시고

이렇게 말씀하셨다.

“아버지,

내 말을 들어주신 것을

감사합니다.

42

나는 아버지께서

항상 내 말을 들어주시는 것을 압니다.

그러나 나는 둘러선 이들이

아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하려고

이 말씀을 드립니다.”

43

예수님이
이 말씀을 하시고

“나사로야, 나오너라”

하고
크게 외치시자

44

죽었던 그가

손발이 베에 묶인 채

나왔다.

그의 얼굴은

수건으로 싸여 있었다.

예수님은
그들에게

“풀어서 다니게 하라”

하고
말씀하셨다.

예수를 죽이려고 모의하다

45

마리아를 위로하러 왔다가

이 광경을 본 많은 유대인들이

예수님을 믿게 되었다.

46

그러나
그들 가운데 몇 사람은
바리새파 사람들에게 가서
예수님이 하신 일을 보고하였다.

47

그래서

대제사장들과

바리새파 사람들은

의회를 소집하고
이렇게 말하였다.

“그 사람이

많은 기적을 행하고 있으니

어떻게 하면 좋겠소?

48

이대로 내버려 두면

모두 그를 믿을 것이고

그렇게 되면

로마 사람들이 와서

우리 성전을 파괴하고

우리 민족을 짓밟을 것이오.”

그러자
그들 중의 한 사람인

그 해의 대제사장
가야바가 이렇게 말하였다.

“여러분은 그렇게도 모르시오?

한 사람이
백성을 위해 죽는 것이

민족 전체가
망하는 것보다

여러분에게
유익이 된다는 것을
생각지 못하시오?”

가야바는
이 말을 스스로 한 것이
아니라

그 해의
대제사장으로서

예수님이

유대 민족을 위해,

52

그리고

유대 민족뿐만 아니라

흩어진 하나님의 자녀들을 모아

하나 되게 하기 위해

죽으실 것을

예언한 것이었다.

그 날부터

그들은
예수님을 죽일 음모를
꾸미기 시작했다.

54

그래서 예수님은
유대인 가운데 더 이상 드러나게
다니지 않으시고

그 곳을 떠나
광야 가까이 있는
에브라임이라는 마을로 가셔서

제자들과 함께
거기에 머물러 계셨다.

유대인의
유월절이 다가오자

많은 사람들이
명절 전에 자기를 정결하게 하려고

미리 시골에서
예루살렘으로 올라갔다.

사람들은
예수님을 찾아다니다가

성전에 서서
“어떻게 생각하시오?
그분이 명절에 오시지 않을까요?” 하고
서로 물었다.

그러나

대제사장들과

바리새파 사람들은

예수님을 붙잡으려고

누구든지
예수님이 계신 곳을 알면

반드시 알려야 한다는
명령을 내렸다.
