Matthew Chapter 9

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

9:1

Jesus
stepped into
a boat,

crossed over
and came to his own
town.

2 

Some men
brought to him
a paralyzed man,

lying
on a mat.

When
Jesus saw
their faith,

he said
to the man,

“Take heart,
son;

your sins

are

forgiven.”

3 

At this,

some
of the teachers of
the law said
to themselves,

“This fellow is
blaspheming!”

4 

Knowing
their thoughts,

Jesus
said,

“Why do you

entertain

evil thoughts

in your
hearts?

5 

Which is
easier: to say,

‘Your sins are forgiven,’

or
to say, ‘

Get up and walk’?

 

6 

But

I
want you
to know
that

the Son of Man

has authority

on earth

to forgive sins.”

So
he said
to the paralyzed
man,

“Get up,
take your mat

and
go home.”

7 

Then
the man got up
and went home.

8 

When
the crowd saw
this,

they were
filled with awe;

and t
hey praised
God,

who
had given
such authority
to man.

The Calling of Matthew

9 

As
Jesus
went on from
there,

he
saw a man
named Matthew

sitting
at the tax collector’s
booth.

“Follow me,”

he told him,

and
Matthew got up
and followed
him.

10 

While
Jesus was
having dinner
at Matthew’s house,

many
tax collectors
and sinners came

and
ate with him
and his disciples.

11 

When
the Pharisees
saw this,

they
 asked
his disciples,

“Why
does your teacher
eat with tax collectors
and sinners?”

12 

On
hearing this,

Jesus said,

“It is not
the healthy
who need a doctor,

but
the sick.

 

13

 But

go and learn

what this means:

‘I
desire
mercy,

not sacrifice.’

For
I have not
come to call the righteous,

but
sinners.”

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

14

 Then
John’s disciples
came

and
asked him,

“How
is it that
we and the Pharisees
fast often,

but
your disciples
do not fast?”

15 

Jesus
answered,

“How can
the guests of
the bridegroom
mourn

while
he is with
them?

The time
will come

when
the bridegroom
will be taken from
them;

then
they will fast.

 

16

 “No one
sews a patch of
unshrunk cloth
on an old garment,

for
the patch will
pull away from
the garment,

making
the tear worse.

 

17

 Neither
do people pour
new wine into
old wineskins.

If
they do,
the skins will burst;

the wine
will run out

and
the wineskins
will be ruined.

No,
they pour
new wine into
new wineskins,

and
both are
preserved.”

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman

18 

While
he was saying
this,

a synagogue leader
came and knelt

before
him and said,

“My daughter
has just died.

But
come and

put
your hand
on her,

and
she will live.”

19 

Jesus
got up and went
with him,

and
so did
his disciples.

20 

Just then

a woman
who had been
subject to bleeding
for twelve years

came up
behind him

and
touched
the edge of his
cloak.

21 

She said
to herself,

“If
I only
touch his cloak,

I will be
healed.”

22 

Jesus
turned and saw
her.

“Take heart,
daughter,”
he said,

“your faith
has healed you.”

And
the woman
was healed

at that moment.

23 

When
Jesus entered
the synagogue leader’s
house

and saw
the noisy crowd
and people playing
pipes,

24 

he said,
“Go away.

The girl
is not dead
but asleep.”

But
they laughed
at him.

 

25 

After
the crowd
had been put outside,

he
went in
and took the girl
by the hand,

and

she got up.

26 

News
of this spread
through all that region.

Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute

27 

As
Jesus
went on from there,

two
blind men
followed him,

calling out,

“Have mercy on us,
Son of David!”

28 

When
he had gone indoors,

the blind men
came to him,

and
he asked
them,

“Do you
believe that
I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,”
they replied.

29 

Then
he touched
their eyes

and said,

“According

to your faith

let it be done

to you”;

30 

and
their sight was
restored.

Jesus
warned them
sternly,

“See that
no one knows
about this.”

31 

But
they went out

and
spread the news
about him

all over t
hat region.

32 

While
they were going
out,

a man
who was
demon-possessed

and
could not
talk was brought to
Jesus.

33 

And
when the demon
was driven out,

the man
who had been mute
spoke.

The crowd
was amazed

and said,

“Nothing like this
has ever been seen
in Israel.”

34 

But

the Pharisees
said,

“It is
 by the prince of
demons

that
he drives out
demons.”

The Workers Are Few

35 

Jesus
went through
all the towns and villages-

teaching
in their synagogues,

proclaiming
the good news
of the kingdom

and

healing
every disease and
sickness.

36 

When
he saw the crowds,

he
had
compassion
on them,

because

they were

harassed

and

helpless,

like
sheep
without
a shepherd.

37 

Then
he said to
his disciples,

“The harvest is
plentiful

but
the workers
are few.

38 

Ask
the Lord of
the harvest,

therefore,

to send out
workers into
his harvest
field.”

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

8:1

When
Jesus came down
from the mountainside,

large crowds
followed
him.

2

A man
with leprosy
came and knelt
before him and
said,

“Lord,

if
you are
willing,

you
can make me
clean.”

3

Jesus
reached out
his hand and
touched the man.

“I
am
willing,”

he said.

“Be clean!”

Immediately
he was cleansed
of his leprosy.

4

Then
Jesus said to him,

“See that
you don’t tell
anyone.

But go,
show yourself
to the priest

and
offer the gift
Moses commanded,

as
a testimony
to them.”

The Faith of the Centurion

When
Jesus had entered
Capernaum,

a centurion
came to him,

asking
for help.

6

“Lord,”
he said,

“my servant
lies at home
paralyzed,

suffering terribly.”

7

Jesus
said to him,

“Shall I
come and heal
him?”

8

The centurion
replied,

“Lord,
I do not deserve
to have you come under
my roof.

But
just say
the word,

and
my servant
will be healed.

9

For
I myself am
a man under authority,

with
soldiers under
me.

I tell this one,
‘Go,’ and he goes;

and that one,
‘Come,’ and he comes.

I say
to my servant,

‘Do this,’
and he does it.”

When
Jesus heard this,

he
was amazed

and
said to those
following him,

“Truly
I tell you,

I have not
found anyone
in Israel

with
such great
faith.

11

I say to you
that many will come
from the east and the west,

and
will take their
places at the feast

with
Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob
in the kingdom of heaven.

12

But
the subjects of
the kingdom will be
thrown outside,

into
the darkness,

where
there will be
weeping and
gnashing of teeth.

 

13

Then
Jesus said to
the centurion,

“Go!
Let it be done
just as you believed
it would.”

And
his servant
was healed

at
that
moment.

Jesus Heals Many

14

When
Jesus came
into Peter’s house,

he
saw
Peter’s mother-in-law
lying in bed
with a fever.

15

He
touched
her hand

and
the fever
left her,

and
she got up
and began to
wait on
him.

16

When
evening came,

many
who were
demon-possessed
were brought to
him,

and
he drove out
the spirits with a word

and
healed
all the sick.

 

17

This
was to fulfill
what was spoken
through

the prophet
Isaiah:

“He
took up
our infirmities

and
bore our
diseases.”

The Cost of Following Jesus

When
Jesus saw
the crowd around
him,

he
gave orders
to cross

to
the other side
of the lake.

19

Then

a teacher of the law
came to him
and said,

“Teacher,

I will
follow you
wherever you go.”

20

Jesus replied,

“Foxes
have dens

and
birds have
nests,

but
the Son of Man
has no place to lay
his head.”

21

Another disciple
said to him,

“Lord,
first let me go
and bury my father.”

 

22

But
Jesus told him,

“Follow me,

and
let the dead
bury their own
dead.”

Jesus Calms the Storm

23

Then
he got into
the boat

and
his disciples
followed him.

24

Suddenly

a furious storm
came up on
the lake,

so that
the waves
swept over the boat.

But
Jesus was
sleeping.

25

The disciples
went and woke him,

saying,

“Lord,
save us!

We’re
going to drown!”

26

He replied,

“You of
little faith,

why
are you
so afraid?”

Then
he got up

and
rebuked
the winds

and
the waves,

and
it was
completely
calm.

27

The men were
amazed

and
asked,

“What
kind of man
is this?

Even
the winds
and the waves
obey
him!”

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men

28

When
he arrived

at
the other side
in the region

of
the Gadarenes,

two
demon-
possessed men
coming from the tombs
met him.

They were
so violent

that
no one could
pass that
way.

29

“What
do you want
with us,

Son of God?

” they
shouted.

“Have you
come here to
torture
us

before
the appointed
time?”

30

Some distance
from them

a large
herd of pigs
was feeding.

31

The demons
begged Jesus,

“If
you drive us
out,

send us
into the herd
of pigs.”

32

He said
to them,

“Go!”

So
they
came out

and
went into
the pigs,

and
the whole herd
rushed down the steep
bank

into
the lake

and
died

in
the water.

33

Those
tending the pigs
ran off,

went
into the town

and
reported
all this,

including
what had happened

to
the demon-
possessed men.

Then

the whole town
went out

to
meet Jesus.

And
when they
saw him,

they
pleaded with
him

to leave
their region.

your righteousness

by them.

no reward

heaven.

to the needy,

with trumpets,

the hypocrites do
in the synagogues

and
on the streets,
to be honored by others.

Truly I tell you,

have received
their reward in

is doing,

may be in secret.

your Father,

Prayer

“And
when you pray,

do not be like

obvious to others

Treasures in Heaven

when Jesus saw
the crowds,

went up
on a mountainside
and sat down.

His disciples
came to
him,

he began
to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are
the poor in
spirit,

for
theirs is
the kingdom of
heaven.

Blessed are
those who
mourn,

for
they will be
comforted.

5

Blessed are
the meek,

for
they will
inherit the earth.

Blessed are
those who hunger
and thirst for righteousness,

they will be
filled.

7

Blessed are
the merciful,

for
they will be
shown

Salt and Light

The Fulfillment of the Law

that I have come
to abolish the Law

the Prophets;

come to abolish
them

but
to fulfill them.

For truly I tell you,

heaven and earth
disappear,

not
the smallest letter,

not
the least stroke
of a pen,

will
by any means
disappear from the Law

until
everything is
accomplished.

Therefore

anyone
who sets aside
one of the least of
these commands

and
teaches others
accordingly

will be
called least
in the kingdom of
heaven,

but
whoever
practices and teaches
these commands

will be
called great
in the kingdom of
heaven.

For
I tell you
that

unless
your righteousness
surpasses that of the Pharisees
and the teachers of
the law,

you will
certainly not enter
the kingdom of
heaven.

Murder

21

“You
have heard
that it was said
to the people long ago,

‘You shall not murder,

and anyone
who murders will be
subject to
judgment.’

22

But
I tell you
that

anyone
who is angry
with a brother or
sister

will be
subject to
judgment.

Again,
anyone who says
to a brother or
sister,

‘Raca,’
is answerable
to the court.

And
anyone who
says,

‘You fool!’

will be
in danger of
the fire of
hell.

“Therefore,

if you are
offering your gift
at the altar

and
there remember that
your brother or sister
has something
against you,

24

leave
your gift there
in front of the altar.

First
go and be reconciled
to them;

then
come and
offer your gift.

25

“Settle
matters quickly
with your adversary

who
is taking you
to court.

Do it
while you are
still together on the way,

or
your adversary
may hand you over
to the judge,

and the judge may
hand you over to
the officer,

and
you may be
thrown into prison.

Truly
I tell you,

you will not
get out

until
you have paid
the last penny.

Adultery

27

“You
have heard
that it was said,

‘You shall not
commit adultery.’

28

But
I tell you that
anyone who looks at
a woman lustfully

has
already
committed adultery

with her
in his heart.

29

If
your right eye
causes you to stumble,

gouge it out
and throw it away.

It is better
for you to lose
one part of your body

than
for your whole body
to be thrown
into hell.

30

And
if your right hand
causes you to
stumble,

cut it off and
throw it away.

It is better
for you to lose
one part of your body

than
for your whole body
to go into
hell.

Divorce

“It has been said,

‘Anyone
who divorces
his wife must give her
a certificate of
divorce.’

But
I tell you that
anyone who divorces
his wife,

except
for sexual immorality,

makes her
the victim of
adultery,

and
anyone who marries
a divorced woman
commits
adultery.

Oaths

33

“Again,
you have heard
that

it was said
to the people long ago,

‘Do not
break your oath,

but
fulfill to the Lord
the vows you have
made.’

But I tell you,
do not swear an oath
at all:

either
by heaven,
for it is God’s
throne;

35

or
by the earth,
for it is his footstool;

or
by Jerusalem,
for it is the city of
the Great King.

36

And
do not swear
by your head,
for you cannot make
even one hair white or black.

37

All
you need to
say is

simply
‘Yes’ or ‘No’;

anything
beyond this
comes from the
evil one.

Eye for Eye

“You have heard that
it was said,

‘Eye for eye,
and tooth for tooth.’

But I tell you,
do not resist an evil person.

If anyone slaps you
on the right cheek,

turn to them
the other cheek also.

40

And if anyone
wants to sue you
and take your shirt,
hand over your coat
as well.

If anyone
forces you to go
one mile, go with them
two miles.

Give
to the one
who asks you,

and
do not
turn away from the one
who wants to borrow
from you.

Love for Enemies

43

“You have heard that
it was said,

‘Love your neighbor
and hate your enemy.’

44

But I tell you,

love
your enemies

and
pray for those
who persecute you,

45

that
you may be
children of your Father
in heaven.

He
causes his sun
to rise on the evil and
the good,

and
sends rain
on the righteous
and the unrighteous.

46

If you love
those who love you,

what reward
will you get?

Are not
even the tax collectors
doing that?

47

And
if you greet
only your own people,

what
are you doing
more than others?

Do not even pagans
do that?

48

Be perfect,
therefore,

as
your heavenly
Father is

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

two brothers,

They
were casting
a net

for they were
fishermen.

“Come,

follow me,”

him spread
all over Syria,

with various diseases,

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3:1

In
those days
John the Baptist
came,

preaching
in the wilderness
of Judea

and
|saying,

“Repent,

for
the kingdom
of heaven has come
near.”

This is he
who was spoken
of through

the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice
of one calling
in the wilderness,
‘

Prepare

the way

for the Lord,

make
straight paths
for him.’”

John’s clothes were
made of camel’s hair,

and
he had
a leather belt
around his waist.

His
food was
locusts and wild honey.

People
went out to him
from Jerusalem

and
all Judea and
the whole region of
the Jordan.

Confessing

their sins,

they
were baptized
by him

in the Jordan River.

7

But

when
he saw

many of

the Pharisees and

Sadducees

coming to
where he was
baptizing,

he
said
to them:

“You brood of vipers!

Who
warned you
to flee

from
the coming
wrath?

Produce
fruit

in keeping with

repentance.

9

And do not think
you can say to yourselves,

‘We have
Abraham as
our father.’

I tell you that
out of these stones
God can raise up children
for Abraham.

The ax is
already at the root
of the trees,

and
every tree
that does not
produce good fruit

will be
cut down

and
thrown into
the fire.

“I baptize you
with water for
repentance.

after me
comes one who is
more powerful
than I,

whose
sandals I am not
worthy to carry.

He wil
l baptize you with
the Holy Spirit
and fire.

His
winnowing fork
is in his hand,

and
he will clear
his threshing floor,

gathering
his wheat into
the barn

and
burning up
the chaff with

unquenchable
fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

Then

Jesus
came from Galilee
to the Jordan

to be
baptized by
John.

But
John tried to
deter him, saying,

“I need to be
baptized by you,

and
do you come
to me?”

Jesus
replied,

“Let it be so now;

it is
proper for us
to do this

to fulfill
all righteousness.”

Then
John consented.

16

As soon as
Jesus was baptized,

he
went up
out of the water.

At that moment
heaven was opened,

and
he saw

the Spirit of God
descending like a dove

and alighting
on him.

The Magi Visit the Messiah

Jesus was born
in Bethlehem in Judea,

during
the time of
King Herod,

Magi
from the east
came to Jerusalem

and asked,

“Where
is the one
who has been born king
of the Jews?

We
saw his star
when it
rose

and
have come to
worship
him.”

3

When
King Herod
heard this

he was
disturbed,

and
all Jerusalem
with him.

4

When
he had called together
all the people’s
chief priests

and

teachers
of the law,

he
asked them
where the Messiah
was to be born.

5

“In Bethlehem
in Judea,”
they replied,

“for this is

what

the prophet

has

written:

6

“‘But you,

Bethlehem,

in
the land of
Judah,

are
by no means

least

among

the rulers

of Judah;

for out of
you will come
a ruler

who
will shepherd
my people
Israel.’”

Then
Herod called
the Magi secretly

and found out
from them the exact time
the star had appeared.

He
sent them
to Bethlehem and said,

“Go
and search carefully
for the child.

As soon as
you find him,

report to me,

so that
I too may go and
worship him.”

After
they had heard
the king,

they
went on their way,

and
the star

they
had seen
when it rose

went ahead
of them

until

it stopped

over the place

where the child was.

When
they saw the star,

they were
overjoyed.

On coming
to the house,

they
saw the child
with his mother
Mary,

and they
bowed down
and worshiped
him.

Then
they opened
their treasures

presented him
with gifts of gold,
frankincense and
myrrh.

And
having been
warned in a dream
not to go back to Herod,

their country
by another route.

The Escape to Egypt

13

When
they had gone,

an angel of the Lord
appeared to Joseph
in a dream.

“Get up,”
he said,

“take the child
and his mother
and escape to Egypt.

Stay there
until I tell you,

for
Herod is
going to search for
the child

to
kill him.”

14

So
he got up,
took the child and
his mother

during
the night and
left for Egypt,

15

where
he stayed

until
the death of
Herod.

And
so was fulfilled
what the Lord had said
through the prophet:

“Out of Egypt

I called my son.”

16

When
Herod realized
that he had been outwitted
by the Magi,

he
was furious,

and
he gave orders
to kill all the boys
in Bethlehem

and
its vicinity
who were two years old
and under,

in accordance
with the time he had learned
from the Magi.

Then
what was said
through the prophet
Jeremiah was
fulfilled:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,

weeping
and great mourning,

Rachel
weeping for her children

and refusing
to be comforted,

because
they are no more.”

The Return to Nazareth

19

After
Herod died,

an angel of the Lord
appeared in a dream
to Joseph in Egypt

20

and said,
“Get up,
take the child and
his mother and go to the land
of Israel,

for those
who were trying to
take the child’s life
are dead.”

21

So he got up,
took the child and his mother
and went to the land
of Israel.

22

But
when he heard
that Archelaus was reigning
in Judea in place of

his
|father Herod,
he was afraid to go
there.

Having
been warned in
a dream,

he
withdrew
to the district of
Galilee,

23

and
he went

and lived

in a town

called

Nazareth.

So was fulfilled
what was said through
the prophets,

that
he would be called
a Nazarene.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

Joseph her husband
was faithful to the law,

and yet

disgrace,

had in mind
to divorce her
quietly.

But
after he had
considered this,

an angel
of the Lord appeared
to him

a dream and
said,

Mary home

as your wife,

what is conceived
in her is

the Holy Spirit.
