John Chapter 11 /Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
John Chapter 11
The Death of Lazarus
11
Now
a man named Lazarus
was sick.
He
was from Bethany,
the village of Mary and
her sister Martha.
2
(This Mary,
whose
brother Lazarus
now lay sick,
was
the same one
who poured perfume on the Lord
and wiped his feet
with her hair.)
3
So the sisters sent
word to Jesus,
“Lord,
the one you love is sick.”
4
When he heard this,
Jesus said,
“This sickness
will not end in death.
No,
it is for God’s glory
so that
God’s Son may be
glorified through it.”
5
Now
Jesus loved Martha
and her sister and
Lazarus.
6
So when he heard that
Lazarus was sick,
he stayed
where he was two more days,
7
and then
he said to his disciples,
“Let us go back to Judea.”
8
“But Rabbi,”
they said, “
a short while ago
the Jews there tried to
stone you,
and yet
you are going back?”
9
Jesus answered,
“Are there not twelve hours of
daylight?
Anyone
who walks in the daytime
will not stumble,
for they see
by this world’s light.
10
It is when a person walks
at night that they stumble,
for they have no light.”
11
After he had said this,
he went on to tell them,
“Our friend
Lazarus has fallen asleep;
but I am going there
to wake him up.”
12
His disciples replied,
“Lord, if he sleeps,
he will get better.”
13
Jesus had been
speaking of
his death,
but
his disciples thought
he meant natural
sleep.
14
So then
he told them plainly,
“Lazarus is dead,
15
and for your sake
I am glad I was not there,
so that you may believe.
But let us go to him.”
16
Then Thomas
(also known as Didymus) said
to the rest of the disciples,
“Let us also go,
that we may die with him.”
Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus
17
On his arrival,
Jesus
found that
Lazarus had already been
in the tomb for
four days.
18
Now
Bethany was
less than two miles from
Jerusalem,
19
and
many Jews had come to
Martha and Mary to comfort them
in the loss of their brother.
20
When
Martha heard that
Jesus was coming,
she
went out to meet him,
but
Mary stayed at home.
21
“Lord,”
Martha said to Jesus,
“if you had been here,
my brother
would not have
died.
22
But
I know that
even now God will give you
whatever you ask.”
23
Jesus said to her,
“Your brother will
rise again.”
24
Martha answered,
“I know he will rise again
in the resurrection
at the last day.”
25
Jesus said to her,
“I am the resurrection
and
the life.
The one
who believes in me
will live,
even though
they die;
26
and
whoever
lives by
believing in me
will never die.
Do you believe this?”
27
“Yes, Lord,” she replied,
“I believe that
you are the Messiah,
the Son of God,
who is to come into the world.”
28
After she had said this,
she went back and called
her sister Mary aside.
“The Teacher is here,”
she said,
“and
is asking for you.”
29
When Mary heard this,
she got up quickly
and went to him.
30
Now
Jesus had not yet
entered the village,
but was still at the place
where Martha had met him.
31
When
the Jews
who had been with Mary
in the house, comforting her,
noticed
how quickly she got up
and went out,
they followed her,
supposing
she was going to
the tomb to mourn there.
32
When
Mary reached the place
where Jesus was and saw him,
she
fell at his feet and said,
“Lord, if you had been here,
my brother
would not have died.”
33
When
Jesus saw her weeping,
and the Jews
who had come along with her
also weeping,
he was
deeply moved
in spirit
and troubled.
34
“Where
have you laid him?”
he asked.
“Come and see, Lord,”
they replied.
35
Jesus wept.
36
Then
the Jews said,
“See
how he loved him!”
37
But
some of them said,
“Could not
he who opened the eyes of
the blind man have kept
this man from dying?”
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38
Jesus,
once more deeply moved,
came to the tomb.
It was a cave
with a stone laid across
the entrance.
39
“Take away the stone,”
he said.
“But, Lord,”
said Martha, the sister
of the dead man,
“by this time
there is a bad odor,
for he has been there
four days.”
40
Then Jesus said,
“Did I not tell you
that if you believe,
you will see the glory of
God?”
41
So they
took away the stone.
Then
Jesus looked up
and said,
“Father,
I thank you that
you have heard me.
42
I knew that
you always hear me,
but I said this
for the benefit of the people
standing here,
that
they may believe
that
you sent me.”
43
When
he had said this,
Jesus called
in a loud voice,
“Lazarus, come out!”
44
The dead man
came out,
his hands
and feet wrapped with
strips of linen,
and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them,
“Take off
the grave clothes
and let him go.”
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45
Therefore
many of the Jews
who had come to visit Mary,
and
had seen what Jesus did,
believed in him.
46
But
some of them
went to the Pharisees
and
told them
what Jesus had done.
47
Then
the chief priests
and the Pharisees
called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
“What are we accomplishing?”
they asked.
“Here is this man
performing many signs.
48
If we let him go on like this,
everyone will believe in him,
and then
the Romans
will come
and take away
both our temple
and our nation.”
49
Then one of them,
named Caiaphas, who was
high priest that year, spoke up,
“You know nothing at all!
50
You do not realize that
it is better for you that
one man die for the people
than that the whole nation perish.”
51
He did not say this
on his own,
but
as high priest that year
he prophesied that
Jesus would die for
the Jewish nation,
52
and
not only for that nation
but also
for the scattered
children of God,
to bring them together
and make them one.
53
So from that day on
they plotted to take his life.
54
Therefore
Jesus no longer
moved about publicly
among the people of Judea.
Instead
he withdrew to
a region near the wilderness,
to a village called Ephraim,
where he stayed with
his disciples.
55
When
it was almost time
for the Jewish Passover,
many
went up from the country
to Jerusalem
for
their ceremonial
cleansing before
the Passover.
56
They kept looking
for Jesus,
and
as they stood
in the temple courts
they
asked one another,
“What do you think?
Isn’t he coming
to the festival at all?”
57
But
the chief priests
and the Pharisees had given
orders
that
anyone who found out
where Jesus was should report it
so that
they might arrest him.

마리아와 마르다
두 자매가 사는 베다니에
나사로라는 사람이
병들어 있었다.

마리아의 오빠였으며
마리아는
주님께 값비싼 향유를
붓고
자기 머리카락으로
주님의 발을 닦아 드린
여자였다.

두 자매는
예수님께 사람을 보내
“주님,
주님이 사랑하시는 사람이
병들었습니다” 라는 말을
전하게 하였다.

예수님은
이 말을 들으시고
“이 병은 죽을 병이 아니라
하나님의 영광을 위한 것이며
이것을 통해서
하나님의 아들이
영광을 받게 하려는 것이다”
하고 말씀하셨다.

예수님은
두 자매와 나사로를 사랑하셨다.
6
그래서 예수님은
나사로가 병들었다는 말을 들으시고
계시던 곳에서 이틀을 더 머무시다가
7
제자들에게
“다시 유대로 가자” 하고
말씀하셨다.
8
제자들이 예수님께
“선생님, 얼마 전에도
유대인들이 선생님을 돌로
치려고 했는데
또 그리로
가려고 하십니까?” 하자
9
예수님이 대답하셨다.
“낮은 열두 시간이 아니냐?
누구든지 낮에 다니는 사람은
이 세상 빛을 보기 때문에
걸려 넘어지지 않지만
10
밤에 다니면
그 사람에게 빛이 없으므로
걸려 넘어진다.”
11
예수님은
이 말씀을 하신 후
그들에게
“우리 친구
나사로가 잠들었다.
그러나
내가 그를 깨우러 간다”
하고 말씀하셨다.
12
그때 제자들이
“주님, 그가 잠들었으면
나을 것입니다” 하였다.
13
예수님은
나사로가
죽은 것을 가리켜
말씀하셨으나
제자들은
그저 잠들어
쉬고 있는 것으로 생각하였다.
14
그래서
예수님이 제자들에게
분명하게 말씀해
주셨다.
“나사로는 죽었다.
15
너희를 위해
내가 거기 없었던 것을
나는 기뻐한다.
이것은
너희가 믿도록 하기 위해서이다.
그러나 이제
그에게로 가자.”
16
그때
디두모라는 도마가
다른 제자들에게
“우리도 예수님과 함께
죽으러 가자” 하였다.
예수께서 나사로의 누이들을 위로하시다
17
예수님이
그 곳에 도착해서 보니
나사로가 무덤에 묻힌 지
이미 4일이나 되었다.
18
베다니는
예루살렘에서 3킬로미터
조금 못 되는 가까운 곳이었다.
19
많은 유대인들이
오빠의 죽음을 슬퍼하는
마르다와 마리아를 위로하러
와 있었다.
20
마르다는
예수님이 오신다는 말을 듣고
마중을 나갔으나
마리아는 집에 있었다.
21
마르다는
예수님께 이렇게 말하였다.
“주님께서 여기 계셨더라면
제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 거예요.
22
그러나 저는
지금이라도
주님이 구하시는 것은
무엇이든지
하나님이 주실 것으로 압니다.”
23
“네 오빠가
다시 살아날 것이다.”
24
“마지막 날 부활 때에
오빠가 다시 살아나리라는 것은
저도 알고 있습니다.”
25
“나는 부활이며 생명이다.
나를 믿는 사람은
죽어도 살 것이며
26
누구든지
살아서 나를 믿는 사람은
영원히 죽지 않을 것이다.
네가 이것을 믿느냐?”
27
“예, 주님.
저는 주님이
세상에 오실 그리스도시며
하나님의 아들이심을 믿습니다.”
28
이 말을 하고서
마르다는 집으로 돌아가
동생 마리아를 조용히 불러
“선생님이 오셔서 너를 찾으신다” 하고
일러 주었다.
29
마리아는 이 말을 듣고
급히 일어나 예수님에게로 갔다.
30
예수님은
아직 마을에 들어오시지 않고
마르다가
마중 나갔던 곳에
그대로 계셨다.
31
집에서
마리아를 위로하던
유대인들은
마리아가
급히 일어나 나가는 것을
보고
울려고
무덤으로 가는 줄 알고
뒤따라 나갔다.
32
마리아는
예수님이 계신 곳에
이르러
예수님을 뵙고
그 앞에 엎드려
“주님이 여기 계셨더라면
제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 거예요”
하고 말하였다.
33
예수님은
마리아가 울고 또 그녀와 함께 온
유대인들까지 우는 것을 보시고
몹시 안타까워하시며
34
“그를 어디 두었느냐?”
하고 물으셨다.
그들이
“주님, 와서 보십시오” 하자
35
예수님은
눈물을 흘리셨다.
36
그때 유대인들은
“저것 보시오.
나사로를 무척이나
사랑했던 모양이오” 하였고
37
그들 중 어떤 사람은
“소경의 눈을 뜨게 한 그가
이 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었던가?”
하였다.
예수께서 죽은 나사로를 살려주시다
38
예수님은
다시 탄식하시며
무덤으로 가셨다.
무덤은 동굴이었으며
입구는 돌로 막혀 있었다.
39
예수님이
“돌을 옮겨 놓아라”
하시자
죽은 사람의 누이
마르다가
“주님,
죽은 지가
4일이나 되었으니
냄새가 날 것입니다”
하였다.
40
그래서 예수님은
마르다에게
“네가
믿기만 하면
하나님의 영광을
보게 될 것이라고
내가 말하지 않았느냐?”
하고 말씀하셨다.
41
사람들이
돌을 옮겨 놓자
예수님은 하늘을 우러러보시고
이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“아버지,
내 말을 들어주신 것을
감사합니다.
42
나는 아버지께서
항상 내 말을 들어주시는 것을 압니다.
그러나 나는 둘러선 이들이
아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하려고
이 말씀을 드립니다.”
43
예수님이
이 말씀을 하시고
“나사로야, 나오너라”
하고
크게 외치시자
44
죽었던 그가
손발이 베에 묶인 채
나왔다.
그의 얼굴은
수건으로 싸여 있었다.
예수님은
그들에게
“풀어서 다니게 하라”
하고
말씀하셨다.
예수를 죽이려고 모의하다
45
마리아를 위로하러 왔다가
이 광경을 본 많은 유대인들이
예수님을 믿게 되었다.
46
그러나
그들 가운데 몇 사람은
바리새파 사람들에게 가서
예수님이 하신 일을 보고하였다.
47
그래서
대제사장들과
바리새파 사람들은
의회를 소집하고
이렇게 말하였다.
“그 사람이
많은 기적을 행하고 있으니
어떻게 하면 좋겠소?
48
이대로 내버려 두면
모두 그를 믿을 것이고
그렇게 되면
로마 사람들이 와서
우리 성전을 파괴하고
우리 민족을 짓밟을 것이오.”
49
그러자
그들 중의 한 사람인
그 해의 대제사장
가야바가 이렇게 말하였다.
“여러분은 그렇게도 모르시오?
50
한 사람이
백성을 위해 죽는 것이
민족 전체가
망하는 것보다
여러분에게
유익이 된다는 것을
생각지 못하시오?”
51
가야바는
이 말을 스스로 한 것이
아니라
그 해의
대제사장으로서
예수님이
유대 민족을 위해,
52
그리고
유대 민족뿐만 아니라
흩어진 하나님의 자녀들을 모아
하나 되게 하기 위해
죽으실 것을
예언한 것이었다.
53
그 날부터
그들은
예수님을 죽일 음모를
꾸미기 시작했다.
54
그래서 예수님은
유대인 가운데 더 이상 드러나게
다니지 않으시고
그 곳을 떠나
광야 가까이 있는
에브라임이라는 마을로 가셔서
제자들과 함께
거기에 머물러 계셨다.

유대인의
유월절이 다가오자
많은 사람들이
명절 전에 자기를 정결하게 하려고
미리 시골에서
예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
56
사람들은
예수님을 찾아다니다가
성전에 서서
“어떻게 생각하시오?
그분이 명절에 오시지 않을까요?” 하고
서로 물었다.
57
그러나
대제사장들과
바리새파 사람들은
예수님을 붙잡으려고
누구든지
예수님이 계신 곳을 알면
반드시 알려야 한다는
명령을 내렸다.

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep
1
“Very truly
I tell you* Pharisees,
anyone
who does not enter
the sheep pen by the gate,
but climbs in
by some other way,
is a thief and a robber.
2
The one
who enters
by the gate is
the shepherd of
the sheep.
3
The gatekeeper
opens the gate
for him,
and the sheep
listen to his voice.
He calls
his own sheep by name
and leads them out.
4
When he has
brought out all his own,
he goes on
ahead of them,
and his sheep
follow him
because
they know his voice.
5
But they will never
follow a stranger;
in fact,
they will run away
from him
because
they do not recognize
a stranger’s voice.”
6
Jesus used
this figure of speech,
but
the* Pharisees
did not understand
what
he was telling them.
7
Therefore
Jesus said again,
“Very truly I tell you,
I am the gate
for the sheep.
8
All who have come
before me are thieves
and robbers,
but
the sheep
have not listened
to them.
9
I am the gate;
whoever enters
through me
will be saved.
They will come
in and go out,
and find pasture.
10
The thief comes
only to steal
and kill
and destroy;
I have come
that they may have life,
and have it to the full.
11
“I am the good shepherd.
The good shepherd
lays down his life
for the sheep.
12
The hired hand
is not the shepherd
and does not
own the sheep.
So when he sees
the wolf coming,
he abandons the sheep
and runs away.
Then the wolf
attacks the flock and
scatters it.
13
The man runs away
because he is a hired hand
and cares nothing
for the sheep.
14
“I am the good shepherd;
I know my sheep
and my sheep
know me—
15
just as
the Father knows me
and I know the Father—
and I lay down my life
for the sheep.
16
I have other sheep
that are not of this sheep pen.
I must bring them also.
They too will
listen to my voice,
and there shall be
one flock and
one shepherd.
17
The reason
my Father loves me is
that I lay down my life—
only to take it up again.
18
No one takes it from me,
but I lay it down of my own accord.
I have authority to lay it down
and authority to take it up again.
This command I received from my Father.”
19
The Jews
who heard these words
were again divided.
20
Many of them said,
“He is demon-possessed
and raving mad.
Why listen to him?”
21
But others said,
“These are not
the sayings of a man
possessed by a demon.
Can a demon
open the eyes of
the blind?”
Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims
22
Then came
the Festival of Dedication.
at Jerusalem.
It was winter,
23
and Jesus was
in the temple courts
walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.
24
The Jews who were there
gathered around him, saying,
“How long will you
keep us in suspense?
If you are the Messiah,
tell us plainly.”
25
Jesus answered,
“I did tell you,
but you do not believe.
The works I do
in my Father’s name
testify about me,
26
but
you do not
believe
because
you are not
my sheep.
27
My sheep
listen to my voice;
I know them,
and they follow me.
28
I give them
eternal life,
and they shall never perish;
no one will
snatch them
out of my hand.
29
My Father,
who has given them to me,
is greater than all;
no one can snatch them
out of my Father’s hand.
30
I and the Father are one.”
31
Again his Jewish opponents
picked up stones to stone him,
32
but Jesus said to them,
“I have shown you
many good works from the Father.
For which of these
do you stone me?”
33
“We are not stoning you
for any good work,” they replied,
“but for blasphemy,
because you, a mere man,
claim to be God.”
34
Jesus answered them,
“Is it not written in your Law,
‘I have said you are “gods”’?
35
If he called them ‘gods,’
to whom the word of God came—
and Scripture cannot be set aside—
36
what about the one
whom the Father set apart
as his very own and sent into the world?
Why then
do you accuse me of
blasphemy because I said,
‘I am God’s Son’?
37
Do not believe me
unless I do the works of
my Father.
38
But if I do them,
even though
you do not believe me,
believe the works,
that you may know
and understand that
the Father is in me,
and I in the Father.”
39
Again they tried to seize him,
but he escaped their grasp.
40
Then Jesus went back
across the Jordan to the place
where John had been baptizing
in the early days.
There he stayed,
41
and many people came to him.
They said,
“Though John never
performed a sign,
all that John said about
this man was true.”
42
And in that place
many believed in Jesus.

계속해서 말씀하셨다.
“내가 분명히 너희에게 말한다.
문 으로 양의 우리에 들어가지 않고
다른 데로 넘어가는 사람은
도둑이며 강도이다.

문으로 들어가는 사람은
양의 목자이다.
3
문지기는
그에게 문을 열어 주고
양들은
목자의 음성을 알아듣는다.
그리고
목자는 자기 양들의 이름을
하나하나 불러서 데리고 나간다.
4
양떼를 다 불러낸 후에
목자가 앞서 가면
양들은 그의 음성을 알고
뒤따라간다.
5
그러나 양들은
낯선 사람의 음성은 모르기 때문에
따라가지 않고 피해서 달아난다.”

예수님은 그들에게
이 비유를 말씀해 주셨으나
그들은 예수님의 말씀이
무엇을 뜻하는지 이해하지 못했다.
7
그래서
예수님은 다시 말씀하셨다.
“내가 너희에게 분명히
말한다.
나는 양의 문이다.
8
나보다 먼저 온 사람은
모두 도둑이며 강도이다.
그러므로 양들이
그들의 말을 듣지 않았다.
9
나는 문이다.
누구든지
나를 통해 들어가면
구원을 받고
마음대로 드나들며
꼴을 얻을 것이다.
10
도둑이 오는 것은
양을 훔쳐다가
죽여 없애려는 것뿐이다.
그러나 내가 온 것은
양들이 생명을 얻되
더욱 풍성히 얻도록 하기 위해서이다.
11
나는 선한 목자이다.
선한 목자는 양을 위해
자기 생명을 바친다.
12
삯꾼은 목자가 아니고
양도 자기 양이 아니므로
이리가 오는 것을 보면
양을 버리고 달아난다.
그래서 이리가
양들을 물어가고
양떼를 흩어 버린다.
13
그가 달아나는 것은
삯꾼이므로 양들에게
관심이 없기 때문이다.
14
나는 선한 목자이다.
나는 내 양을 알고
내 양도 나를 안다.
15
이것은 아버지께서 나를 아시고
내가 아버지를 아는 것과 같다.
그래서 나는
양들을 위해
내 생명을 버린다.
16
또 내게는
우리 안에 들어 있지 않은
다른 양들도 있다.
나는 그들을 데려와야 한다.
그 양들도
내 음성을 듣고
한 목자 아래서
한 무리가 될 것이다.
17
아버지께서
나를 사랑하시는 이유는
내가 생명을 다시 얻으려고
내 생명을 버리기 때문이다.
18
이 생명을
내게서 빼앗아 갈 자는 없지만
내가 스스로 버린다.
나에게는 생명을 버릴 권한도 있고
다시 가질 권한도 있다.
이것은 내 아버지에게서 받은 특권이다.”

이 말씀 때문에
유대인들 사이에 또 의견이 엇갈렸다.
20
그들 중 많은 사람이
“그는 귀신 들려 미쳤는데
어째서 그 사람의 말을 듣고 있소?” 하였고
21
또 어떤 사람들은
“이것은 귀신 들린 사람의 말이 아니오.
귀신이 어떻게
소경의 눈을 뜨게 할 수 있겠소?” 하였다.
분명히 말해 주시오
22
예루살렘에
수전절이 되었는데
때는 겨울이었다.
23
예수님은 성전 구내에 있는
솔로몬 행각을 거닐고 계셨다.
24
그러자 유대인들이
예수님을 둘러싸고
“당신은 언제까지
우리를 궁금하게 할 셈이오?
당신이 그리스도라면
분명히 말해 주시오” 하였다.
25
그래서 예수님은
그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다.
“내가 이미 말했어도
너희는 믿지 않고 있다.
내가 아버지의 이름으로 하고 있는
이 일들이 나를 증거하고 있다.
26
그러나 너희는
내 양이 아니므로
나를 믿지 않는다.
27
내 양은
내 음성을 알아듣고
나는 그들을 알며
그들은 나를 따른다.
28
내가 그들에게
영원한 생명을 준다.
그래서 그들은
영원히 멸망하지 않을 것이며
아무도 그들을
내 손에서 빼앗아 갈 수 없을 것이다.
29
그들을 나에게 주신 아버지는
그 무엇보다도 위대하신 분이시므로
아버지의 손에서
그들을 빼앗아 갈 자가 없다.
30
나와 아버지는 하나이다.”
31
그러자 유대인들이
다시 돌을 들어 예수님을 치려고 하였다.
32
그때 예수님이 그들에게
“내가 아버지의 지시에 따라
여러 가지 좋은 일을 너희에게 많이 했는데
무엇 때문에 나를 돌로 치려고 하느냐?”
하고 물으셨다.
33
유대인들이 예수님께
“그런 일 때문에 우리가 당신을
돌로 치려는 것이 아니라
당신이 하나님을 모독하기 때문이오.
당신은 사람이면서도 하나님인 체한단 말이오!”
하고 대답하자

예수님이 그들에게 말씀하셨다.
“너희 율법에
‘나는 너희가 신들이라고 말하였다’ 라고
기록되어 있지 않느냐?
35
하나님의 말씀을 받은 사람들을
신이라고 하였으니
성경 말씀은 없앨 수 없다.
36
아버지께서 거룩하게 하여
세상에 보내신 내가

어떻게 너희가
‘당신은 하나님을 모독하고 있소’ 라고
말할 수 있느냐?

내가 만일
아버지의 일을 하지 않으면
나를 믿지 말아라.
38
그러나
내가 아버지의 일을 하거든
나는 믿지 않더라도 그 일만은 믿어라.
그러면 너희가
아버지께서 내 안에 계시고
내가 아버지 안에 있는 것을
확실히 알게 될 것이다.”

유대인들이 또다시
예수님을 잡으려고 하였으나
예수님은 그들의 손에서
벗어나 피하셨다.
40
예수님은
요한이 처음 세례를 주던
요단강 건너편으로 다시 가서
거기에 머무르셨다.
41
그러자 많은 사람들이
예수님에게 모여들었다.
그들은
“요한이 아무 기적도
행하지 않았지만
그가 이분에 대하여 말한 것은
모두 사실이었어” 하고 말했으며
42
많은 사람들이
그 곳에서 예수님을 믿었다.

John Chapter 9
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
1
As he went along,
he saw a man blind
from birth.
2
His disciples asked him,
“Rabbi,
who sinned,
this man or his parents,
that he was born blind?”
3
“Neither this man
nor his parents sinned,”
said Jesus,
“but
this happened
so that
the works of
God
might be
displayed in him.
4
As long as it is day,
we must do
the works of him
who sent me.
Night is coming,
when no one can work.
5
While
I am in the world,
I am the light of
the world.”
6
After saying this,
he spit on the ground,
made some mud
with the saliva,
and put it
on the man’s eyes.
7
“Go,”
he told him,
“wash in the Pool of Siloam”
(this word means “Sent”).
So the man went
and washed,
and came home
seeing.
8
His neighbors
and those who had formerly
seen him begging
asked,
“Isn’t this
the same man
who used to sit and beg?”
9
Some claimed
that he was.
Others said,
“No, he only looks like him.”
But
he himself insisted,
“I am the man.”
10
“How then
were your eyes opened?”
they asked.
11
He replied,
“The man
they call Jesus
made some mud
and put it on my eyes.
He told me
to go to Siloam
and wash.
So I went
and washed,
and then
I could see.”
12
“Where is this man?”
they asked him.
“I don’t know,”
he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13
They brought
to the Pharisees
the man who had been
blind.
14
Now the day
on which Jesus had made
the mud and opened the man’s eyes
was a Sabbath.
15
Therefore
the Pharisees also asked him
how he had received his sight.
“He put mud on my eyes,”
the man replied,
“and I washed,
and now I see.”
16
Some of
the Pharisees said,
“This man is not from God,
for he does not keep
the Sabbath.”
But others asked,
“How can a sinner
perform
such signs?”
So they were
divided.
17
Then
they turned again
to the blind man,
“What have you to say
about him?
It was your eyes
he opened.”
The man replied,
“He is a prophet.”
18
They still did not believe
that he had been blind
and had received
his sight
until
they sent for
the man’s parents.
19
“Is this your son?”
they asked.
“Is this the one
you say was born blind?
How is it that
now he can see?”
20
“We know
he is our son,”
the parents answered,
“and we know
he was born blind.
21
But
how he can see now,
or
who opened his eyes,
we don’t know.
Ask him.
He is of age;
he will speak for himself.”
22
His parents said this
because
they were afraid of
the Jewish leaders,
who already
had decided that
anyone
who acknowledged
that
Jesus was the Messiah
would be put out of
the synagogue.
23
That was why
his parents said,
“He is of age; ask him.”
24
A second time
they summoned the man
who had been blind.
“Give glory to God
by telling the truth,”
they said.
“We know
this man is a sinner.”
25
He replied,
“Whether
he is a sinner or not,
I don’t know.
One thing I do know.
I was blind
but now I see!”
26
Then they asked him,
“What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?”
27
He answered,
“I have told you already
and you did not listen.
Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you want to become
his disciples too?”
28
Then
they hurled insults at him
and said,
“You are this fellow’s disciple!
We are disciples of Moses!
29
We know that
God spoke to Moses,
but as for this fellow,
we don’t even know
where he comes from.”
30
The man answered,
“Now that is remarkable!
You don’t know
where he comes from,
yet he opened my eyes.
31
We know that
God does not listen to sinners.
He listens to
the godly person
who does his will.
32
Nobody has ever heard of
opening the eyes of
a man born blind.
33
If this man
were not from God,
he could do nothing.”
34
To this they replied,
“You were
steeped in sin at birth;
how dare you lecture us!”
And they threw him out.
Spiritual Blindness
35
Jesus heard that
they had thrown him out,
and when he found him,
he said,
“Do you believe
in the Son of Man?”
36
“Who is he, sir?”
the man asked.
“Tell me
so that I may believe
in him.”
37
Jesus said,
“You have now
seen him;
in fact,
he is the one
speaking with you.”
38
Then the man said,
“Lord,
I believe,”
and
he
worshiped
him.
39
Jesus said,
“For judgment
I have come
into this world,
so that
the blind will see
and those who see
will become blind.”
40
Some Pharisees
who were with him
heard him say this and asked,
“What?
Are we blind too?”
41
Jesus said,
“If you were blind,
you would not be
guilty of sin;
but
now that you claim
you can see,
your guilt remains.

나면서 소경 된 사람을 고치심

예수님은
길을 가시다가
날 때부터 소경 된
사람을 보셨다.
2
제자들이 예수님께
“선생님,
누구의 죄로
이 사람이 소경으로
태어났습니까?
자기 죄입니까,
아니면 부모의 죄입니까?”
하고 묻자
3
예수님이
이렇게 말씀하셨다.
“이 사람의 죄도
부모의 죄도 아니다.
이런 일이 일어나게 된 것은
이 사람에게서
하나님의 일이
나타나기 위해서이다.
4
우리는 낮 동안에
나를 보내신 분의
일을 해야 한다.
밤이 오면 그 때는
아무도 일할 수 없다.
5
내가 세상에 있는 동안
나는 세상의 빛이다.”
6
이 말씀을 하시고
예수님은
땅에 침을 뱉어
진흙을 이겨 소경의 눈에
바르시고
7
그에게
“실로암
(번역하면 보냄을 받았다는 뜻)
못에 가서 씻어라”
하셨다.
그래서 소경은
가서 씻고
눈을 뜨고
돌아왔다.
8
그때 이웃 사람들과
전에 그가 구걸하던 것을
본 사람들이
“이 사람은 앉아서
구걸하던 거지가 아니냐?” 하자
9
어떤 사람은
“그래, 바로 그 거지야”
하였고
또 어떤 사람은
“아니야, 그 거지와
닮은 사람이야”
하였다.
그러나 본인은
“내가 바로 그 사람이오”
하고 대답하였다.
10
그러자
사람들이 그에게 물었다.
“그러면
네가 어떻게
눈을 떴느냐?”
11
“예수라는 사람이
진흙을 이겨
내 눈에 바르고
실로암 못에 가서
씻으라고 하시기에
가서 씻었더니
보게 되었습니다.”
12
“그 사람이 어디 있느냐?”
“모르겠습니다.”
13
사람들은
그를 바리새파 사람들에게
데리고 갔다.
14
예수님이 진흙을 이겨
소경의 눈을 뜨게 하신 날은
바로 안식일이었다.
15
그러므로
바리새파 사람들도
그에게 어떻게 눈을 뜨게 되었는지 묻자
“그분이 내 눈에
진흙을 발라 주시기에
씻었더니
이렇게 보게 되었습니다”
하고 대답하였다.
16
바리새파 사람 중에
어떤 사람은
“이 사람이
안식일을 지키지 않는 것으로 보아
하나님이
보내서 온 사람은 아니오”
하였고
또 어떤 사람은
“죄인이 어떻게
이런 기적을 행할 수 있겠는가?”
하였다.
이렇게 서로 의견이 엇갈리자

그들은
소경 되었던 사람에게
다시 물었다.
“그 사람이
네 눈을 뜨게 했으니
너는 그가 누구라고
생각하느냐?”
그때 그는
“예언자라고 생각합니다”
하고 대답하였다.
18
유대인들은
그가 소경으로 있다가
눈을 뜨게 된 것을 믿지 않고
그의 부모를 불러
19
“이 사람이 날 때부터
소경이었다는 당신 아들이오?
그러면
어떻게 지금 보게 되었소?”
하고 물었다.
20
그래서
그의 부모는
이렇게 대답하였다.
“이 아이가
우리 아들이라는 것과
날 때부터 소경이었다는 것은
알고 있습니다만
21
어떻게 해서
지금 눈을 뜨게 되었는지
또 누가
눈을 뜨게
해 주었는지는
모릅니다.
이 아이도 다 컸으니
직접 물어 보십시오.
대답할 수 있을 것입니다.”
22
그 때는 이미
유대인 지도자들이
예수님을
그리스도라고
인정하는 사람은
누구든지
회당에서 쫓아내기로
결정했기 때문에
그의 부모는
그들을 두려워하여
23
“이 아이도 다 컸으니
직접 물어 보십시오” 하고
말한 것이다.
24
그들은 소경 되었던 사람을
두 번째 불러 말하였다.
“너는 하나님께 영광을 돌려라.
우리는 이 사람을 죄인으로 알고 있다.”
25
“그분이
죄인인지
아닌지
나는 모릅니다.
그러나 내가
한 가지 알고 있는 것은
소경이었던 내가
지금 보게 되었다는
이것입니다.”
26
“그 사람이 너에게
무슨 짓을 했으며
어떻게 네 눈을 뜨게 했느냐?”
27
“내가 이미 말했는데도
듣지 않고 왜 다시 묻습니까?
당신들도
그분의 제자가 되고 싶습니까?”
28
그러자 그들은
그에게 욕을 하며 말하였다.
“너는 그 사람의 제자이지만
우리는 모세의 제자이다.
29
하나님이 모세에게 말씀하셨다는 것은 알지만
우리는 이 사람이 어디서 왔는지조차 모른다.”
30
“정말 이상한 일입니다.
그분이
내 눈을
뜨게 해 주셨는데도
당신들은
그분이 어디서 오셨는지
모르신단 말씀입니까?
31
우리는
하나님이
죄인의 말은 듣지 않으시지만
그분의 뜻대로 사는
경건한 사람의 말은
들으시는 것으로
알고 있습니다.
32
세상이 생긴 이후로
지금까지
소경으로 태어난
사람의 눈을
뜨게 했다는 말은
들어 보지 못했습니다.
33
이분이
만일
하나님이
보내서 오신 분이 아니라면
도저히 이런 일을
하실 수가 없었을 것입니다.”
34
그들은 이 말을 듣고
“네가 죄 가운데서 태어난 주제에
우리를 가르치려고 하느냐?” 하고
그를 쫓아내 버렸다.
35
예수님은
바리새파 사람들이
그를 쫓아냈다는 말을 듣고
그 사람을 만나 물었다.
“네가 하나님의 아들을 믿느냐?”
36
“선생님, 누가 그분이십니까?
말씀해 주십시오.
제가 믿겠습니다.”
37
“너는 이미 그를 보았다.
지금 너와 말하는 내가
바로 그 사람이다.”
38
그러자 그는
“주님, 제가 믿습니다” 하며
예수님께 경배하였다.
39
그때 예수님은 그에게
“내가 심판하러
이 세상에 왔으니
보지 못하는 사람은
보게 하고
보는 사람은
소경이 되게 할 것이다”
하고 말씀하셨다.
40
예수님과 함께 있던
몇몇 바리새파 사람이
이 말씀을 듣고
“그러면 우리도
소경이란 말이오?”
하고 묻자
41
예수님은 그들에게
“너희가 소경이었다면
죄가 없었을 것이나
지금 본다고 하니
너희 죄가 그대로 남아 있다”
하고 대답하셨다.
