Their Tongue Like a Bow, To Shoot Lies

Their Tongue
Like a Bow, To Shoot Lies

Jeremiah Chapter 9
Warnings From Israel’s History

9:1

Oh,
that my head
were a spring of
water

and
my eyes
a fountain of
tears!

I
would
weep

day
and night

for
the slain of
my people.

2

Oh,
that I had
in the desert

a lodging place
for travelers,

so that
I might leave
my people

and
go away
from them;

for
they are all
adulterers,

a crowd of
unfaithful
people.

3

“They
make ready
their tongue

like a bow,
to shoot
lies;

it
is not
by truth

that
they triumph
in the land.

They
go from one sin
to another;

they
do not
acknowledge
me,”

declares
the Lord.

4

“Beware
of your friends;

do not
trust anyone
in your
clan.

For
every one
of them
is

a deceiver,

and
every friend

a slanderer.

5

Friend

deceives

friend,

and

no one
speaks
the truth.

They
have taught
their tongues
to lie;

they
weary
themselves

with

sinning.

6

You

live

in
the midst

of
deception;

in
their deceit

they
refuse

to
acknowledge
me,”

declares
the Lord.

7

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
Almighty
says:

“See,

I
will
refine

and

test them,

for
what else
can I do

because

of
the sin

of
my people?

8

Their
tongue is
a deadly arrow;

it
speaks
deceitfully.

With
their mouths

they all
speak cordially
to their neighbors,

but
in their hearts

they
set traps
for them.

9

Should

I

not

punish

them

for this?”

declares
the Lord.

“Should I not
avenge
myself

on
such a nation
as this?”

10

I will weep
and wail

for
the mountains

and

take up
a lament

concerning
the wilderness
grasslands.

They are
desolate
and untraveled,

and
the lowing of
cattle is not heard.

The birds
have all fled

and
the animals
are gone.

11

“I will make
Jerusalem a heap
of ruins,

a haunt of
jackals;

and

I will lay
waste the towns
of Judah

so no one
can live there.”

12

Who
is wise enough
to understand
this?

Who
has been
instructed

by
the Lord

and
can explain it?

Why
has the land been
ruined

and
laid waste
like a desert

that
no one can
cross?

13

The Lord said,

“It is
because

they have
forsaken my
law,

which
I set before
them;

they
have not
obeyed me

or followed
my law.

14

Instead,

they have
followed

the
stubbornness

of
their
hearts;

they
have followed
the Baals,

as their ancestors
taught them.”

15

Therefore

this is
what the Lord
Almighty,

the
God of
Israel, says:

“See,

I will make
this people eat
bitter food

and

drink
poisoned
water.

16

I will scatter
them

among
nations

that
neither they

nor
their ancestors
have known,

and

I will
pursue them
with the sword

until
I have made
an end of them.”

17

This is
what the Lord
Almighty
says:

“Consider now!

Call for
the wailing women
to come;

send
for the most skillful
of them.

18

Let them
come quickly
and wail over us

till
our eyes
overflow with
tears

and water
streams from
our eyelids.

19

The sound of
wailing is heard
from Zion:

‘How ruined
we are!

How great is
our shame!

We
must leave
our land

because
our houses are
in ruins.’”

20

Now,
you women,

hear
the word of
the Lord;

open
your ears

to
the words
of his mouth.

Teach
your daughters
how to wail;

teach
one another
a lament.

21

Death has
climbed in through
our windows

and
has entered
our fortresses;

it has
removed
the children from
the streets

and
the young men
from the public
squares.

22

Say,

“This is
what the Lord
declares:

“‘Dead bodies
will lie  like dung
on the open field,

like
cut grain
behind the reaper,

with
no one
to gather them.’”

23

This is
what the Lord
says:

“Let not

the
wise boast

of
their
wisdom

or

the
strong boast

of
their
strength

 or

the rich
boast

of
their
riches,

24

but

let
the one
who boasts

boast
about this:

  that they have
the understanding
to know
me,

that I am
the Lord,

who
exercises

kindness,

  justice

and

righteousness

on
earth,

 for
in these
I delight,”

declares the Lord.

25

 “The days
are coming,”

declares
the Lord,

“when
I will punish
all

who
are  circumcised only
in the flesh—

26

Egypt, Judah,
Edom, Ammon, Moab
and all

who
live in
the wilderness

in
distant
places.

For
all these nations
are really uncircumcised,

and
even the whole house
of* Israel is uncircumcised
in heart.”

One Eager to Get Rich Will Not Go Unpunished.

One Eager to Get Rich Will Not Go Unpunished.

18

The one

whose walk is

blameless is

kept safe,

but

the one

whose ways are

perverse will fall into

the pit.

19

Those
who work
their land will
have abundant food,

but

those who
chase fantasies will
have their fill of
poverty.

20

A faithful person
will be richly
blessed,

but

one eager
to get rich will not
go unpunished.

21

To show
partiality is
not good

yet

a person will do
wrong

for a piece of
bread.

22

The stingy are
eager to get
rich

and
are unaware
that poverty awaits
them.

23

Whoever
rebukes a person
will in the end gain
favor

rather than

one
who has
a flattering
tongue.

24

Whoever robs
their father or
mother

and says,
“It’s not wrong,”
is partner to one
who destroys.

25

The greedy
stir up conflict,

but

those who

trust in the Lord

will prosper.

26

Those who
trust in themselves
are fools,

but

those who

walk in wisdom

are kept safe.

Proverbs 28:18-26

18

Put on The New Self

Put on The New Self

16

From him
the whole body,
joined

and
held
together

by
every
supporting
ligament,

grows
and builds
itself up

in love,

as
each part
does its work.

17

So
I tell you
this,

and
insist on it

in
the Lord,

that

you must

no longer live

as the Gentiles do,

in
the futility
of their thinking.

18

They are
darkened in their
understanding

and
separated
from the life
of

God

because of

the ignorance

that is in them

due to

the hardening

of their

hearts.

19

Having lost

all sensitivity,

they
have given
themselves

over

to sensuality

so as to indulge

in every kind of

impurity,

and

they are

full of greed.

20

That,
however,

is

not

the way of

life

you learned

21

when
you heard about
Christ

and
were taught
in him

in
accordance
with

the truth

that

is

in

Jesus.

22

You
were taught,
with regard

to your
former way of
life,

to
put off
your old self,

which

is

being

corrupted by

its deceitful

desires;

23

to be
made new

in
the attitude
of

your minds;

24

and
to put on
the new self,

created
to be like
God

in

true

righteousness

and

holiness.

Ephesians 4:16-24

16

He Gave The Right

He Gave The Right

The
true light

that
gives light

He was
in the world,

the world

his own,

his own
did not receive

to all
who received
him,

to those
who believed in
his name,

he
gave
the right
to become
children of
God

HEBREWS CHAPTER 11 / BY FAITH

Hebrews Chapter 11

Faith in Action

11 :1

Now

faith

is

confidence

in

what

we

hope

for

and

assurance

about

what

we

do not

see.

2

This is
what the ancients
were commended for.

3

By faith

we
understand

that
the universe
was formed at God’s
command,

so that
what is seen

was not

made out of

what was visible.

4

By faith

Abel
brought God
a better offering

than
Cain did.

By faith

he was
commended
as righteous,

when
God spoke well
of his offerings.

And
by faith

Abel
still speaks,

even
though
he is dead.

5

By faith

Enoch
was taken
from this life,

so that

he
did not
experience

death:

“He
could not be
found,

because
God had taken him
away.”

For before
he was taken,

he
was
commended

as
one who
pleased God.

6

And

without  faith

it is impossible

to please God,

because
anyone who comes
to him

must believe

that
he exists

and that

he rewards

those who

earnestly

seek him.

7

By faith

Noah,
when warned
about things

not yet seen,

in holy fear
built an ark to save
his family.

By his faith

he
condemned
the world

and
became
heir of the righteousness

that
is in keeping
with faith.

8

By faith

Abraham,

when
called to go
to a place

he would
later receive
as his inheritance,

obeyed
and went,

even though
he did not know

where
he was going.

9

By faith

he
made
his home

in
the promised land
like a stranger

in
a foreign
country;

he lived in tents,

as did
Isaac and Jacob,

who were
heirs with him
of the same promise.

10

For he was
looking forward to
the city with foundations,

whose
architect

and
builder is

God.

11

And

by faith

even
Sarah,
who was past
childbearing age,

was
enabled to bear
children

because
she considered him
faithful

who
had made
the promise.

12

And so
from this one man,

and
he as good as
dead,

came
descendants
as numerous as
the stars in the sky

and
as countless as
the sand on the seashore.

13

All these people
were still living by faith

when
they died.

They

did not

receive

the things
promised;

they
only saw them

and
welcomed them
from a distance,

admitting

that

they were

foreigners

and

strangers

on earth.

14

People
who say such things

show that
they are looking for
a country of their own.

15

If
they
had been thinking of
the country they had left,

they
would have had
opportunity to return.

16

Instead,

they
were longing for
a better country—

a heavenly one.

Therefore

God

is not

ashamed

to be called

their God,

for he has
prepared

a city for them.

17

By faith

Abraham,

when
God tested him,

offered
Isaac as a sacrifice.

He who had
embraced the promises
was about to sacrifice
his one and only son,

18

even though
God had said to him,

“It is through Isaac
that your offspring will be
reckoned.”

19

Abraham
reasoned that

God
could even
raise the dead,

and so
in a manner of
speaking

he did
receive

Isaac back

from death.

20

By faith

Isaac
blessed Jacob
and Esau

in regard to
their future.

21

By faith

Jacob,
when he was dying,

blessed
each of Joseph’s sons,

and
worshiped
as he leaned on
the top of his staff.

22

By faith

Joseph,
when his end was near,

spoke about
the exodus of the Israelites
from Egypt

and
gave instructions
concerning the burial of
his bones.

23

By faith

Moses’ parents
hid him for three months
after he was born,

because
they saw he was
no ordinary child,

and
they were not
afraid of the king’s edict.

24

By faith

Moses,
when he had grown up,

refused
to be known as
the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.

25

He chose
to be mistreated
along with the people of God

rather than
to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

26

He regarded
disgrace for the sake of
Christ as of greater value
than the treasures of Egypt,

because
he was looking ahead
to his reward.

27

By faith

he left Egypt,
not fearing the king’s anger;

he
persevered

because
he saw him
who is invisible.

28

By faith

he kept
the Passover

and
the application
of blood,

so that
the destroyer of
the firstborn would not
touch the firstborn of Israel.

29

By faith

the people
passed through

the Red Sea
as on dry land;

but
when the Egyptians
tried to do so,

they were drowned.

30

By faith

the walls of
Jericho fell,

after the army
had marched around them
for seven days.

31

By faith

the prostitute
Rahab,

because

she
welcomed
the spies,

was not killed
with those who were
disobedient.

32

And what more
shall I say?

I do not have
time to tell about Gideon,
Barak, Samson and Jephthah,
about David and Samuel and the prophets,

33

who
through faith
conquered kingdoms,

administered
justice,

and gained
what was promised;

who
shut the mouths
of lions,

34

quenched
the fury of the flames,

and escaped
the edge of the sword;

whose
weakness was
turned to strength;

and who became
powerful in battle

and routed
foreign armies.

35

Women
received back
their dead,

raised
to life again.

There were
others who were
tortured,

refusing
to be released

so that
they might gain
an even better

resurrection.

36

Some faced
jeers and flogging,

and even chains
and imprisonment.

37

They were
put to death by stoning;

they were
sawed in two;

they were
killed by the sword.

They went about
in sheepskins and goatskins,

destitute,

persecuted

and
mistreated

— 38

the world

was not

worthy of them.

They wandered
in deserts and mountains,

living
in caves

and
in holes
in the ground.

39

These were
all commended for
their faith,

yet

none of them

received

what had been

promised,

40

since

God
had planned

something
better for us

so that
only together
with us would they be
made perfect.

Hebrews 11:1-40

11:1
