♧친절이 낳은 선물♧
비가 많이 내리는 어느 날,
여러 가구점이
모여 있는 거리에서
어떤 할머니가
여기 저기 주위를
살피고 있었다.
아무도 그 할머니에게
신경을 쓰고 있지 않았는데,
한 젊은 가구점 주인이
할머니에게 웃으면서
다가가 웃으면서 말했다.
“할머니,
이쪽으로 오세요,
비도 많이 내리는데
가게 안으로 들어오세요.”
“괜찮아요,
난 가구를 사러 온 게
아니라 차를
기다리고 있어요.”
할머니가 그의
호의를 정중히 사양했지만,
주인은 여전히 웃으며 말했다.
“물건을 안 사셔도 괜찮습니다.
그냥 편히 앉아서
구경하다가 가세요.”
“이러지 않아도 되는데 …”
할머니는 가구점 주인의
친절에 고마워하며
안으로 들어가 소파에
편히 앉아 차를 기다렸다.
“참,
차를 기다린다고 하셨죠?
차번호가 어떻게 되나요?
제가 나가서
확인해 드릴게요,”
주인의 물음에 할머니는
그러지 않아도 된다고
몇 번이나 말했지만,
주인은 끝내 차번호를
알아내어 밖으로 나간 후,
그 차가 왔는지를
계속 확인해 주었다.
그러자
그의 모습을 지켜보고
있던 주위 사람들이
수군거리기 시작했다.
“저 친구 할 일도 되게 없군,
할 일 없으면 편안하게
낮잠이나 자던가.”
“그러게 말이야,
가구 팔 생각은 안 하고
처음 보는 할머니
뒤치다꺼리만하고 있잖아.”
하지만 가구점 주인은
차가 와서 할머니를
태워갈 때까지
친절을 베풀었다.
“할머니 안녕히 가세요.”
“고마웠어요, 젊은이!”
그 일이 있은 며칠 후
가구점 수인은
누군가로부터
편지 한 통을 받았다.
‘비 오는 날 저희 어머니께
베풀어 주신 당신의
친절에 감사드립니다.
이제부터 우리 회사에
필요한 가구 일체를
당신에게 의뢰하며,
또한
고향인 스코틀랜드에
큰 집을 짓는데
그곳에 필요한 가구도
모두 당신에게
의뢰하겠습니다.’
이 편지는 놀랍게도
당시 ‘철강왕’ 으로 불리던
앤드류 카네기
(Andrew Carnegie)
에게서 온 것이었다.
카네기의 어머니에게
친절을 베풀었던
가구점 주인은 그날 이후
피츠버그에서
가장 성공한 가구점
주인이 되었다.

웃는 얼굴로 친절을
베푸는 사람을 만나면
나도 모르게 가슴이
따뜻해짐을 느낀다.
특히 여행을 하다가
친절한 사람을 만나면
여행의 즐거움이
배가 되기도 한다.
