Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

After
Jesus said this,

he looked
toward heaven
and prayed:

“Father,

the hour has come.

Glorify your Son,

that your Son may glorify you.

For you granted him

authority

over all people

that
he might give

eternal life

to all

those you have
given him.

3

Now

this is
eternal life:

that
they know you,

the only true God,

and Jesus Christ,

whom
you have sent.

I have
brought you
glory on earth

by finishing
the work you gave me
to do.

John Chapter 16

1

“All this
I have told you

so that

you will not

fall away.

 

2

They will

put you out of

the synagogue;

in fact,
the time is coming

when
anyone who kills
you

will think
they are offering
a service
to God.

3

They
will do such things

because
they have not known

the Father

or me.

4

I have told you this,

so that
when their time
comes

you will
remember

that

I warned you

about them.

I did not
tell you this
from the beginning

because
I was with you,

5

but now

I am going to him

who sent me.

None
of you asks me,
‘Where are you going?’

6

Rather,
you are filled with
grief

because
I have said these
things.

 

7

But
very truly I tell you,

it is

for your good

that
I am going away.

Unless
I go away,

the Advocate

will not come
to you;

but

if I go,

I will send him
to you.

When
he comes,

he will prove
the world to be
in the wrong

about

sin

and
righteousness

and
judgment:

9

about
sin,

because
people do not believe
in me;

10

about
righteousness,

because
I am going to the Father,

where
you can see me
no longer;

and
about judgment,

because
the prince of this world
now stands condemned.

“I have
much more to say
to you,

more than
you can now bear.

 

13

But
when he,

the Spirit of truth,
comes,

he will
guide you into
all the truth.

He
will not speak
on his own;

he
will speak only
what he hears,

and

he will tell you

what is yet to come.

He will glorify me

because
it is from me

that
he will receive

what
he will make known
to you.

15

All that
belongs to the Father
is mine.

That is why I said

the Spirit
will receive from me
what he will make known
to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16

Jesus
went on to say,

“In a little while

you will see me no more,

and then after a little while

you will see me.”

17

At this,

some of
his disciples said
to one another,

“What does he mean by saying,

‘In a little while
you will see me no more,

and then after
a little while you will see me,’

and ‘Because
I am going to the Father’?”

18

They kept asking,
“What does he mean by
‘a little while’?

We don’t understand
what he is saying.”

19

Jesus
saw that
they wanted to ask him
about this,

so he said to them,

“Are you asking
one another

what I meant
when I said,

‘In a little while
you will see me no more,

and then after
a little while you will
see me’?

20

Very truly I tell you,

you will
weep and mourn

while
the world rejoices.

You will grieve,

but

your grief

will turn to joy.

21

A woman
giving birth to
a child has pain

because
her time has come;

but
when her baby is
born

she forgets
the anguish

because of her joy

that
a child is born into
the world.

22

So with you:

Now is your time
of grief,

but

I will see you again

and

you will rejoice,

and

no one will take away

your joy.

In that day
you will no longer
ask me anything.

Very truly I tell you,

my Father will give you

whatever you ask in my name.

24

Until now
you have not asked
for anything in my name.

Ask

and
you will receive,

and

your joy

will be complete.

“Though
I have been
speaking figuratively,

a time is coming
when I will no longer use
this kind of language

but

will tell you plainly

about my Father.

In that day

you will ask

in my name.

I am not saying
that I will ask the Father
on your behalf.

27

No,
the Father himself
loves you

because
you have loved me

and
have believed

that
I came from God.

28

I came

from the Father

and entered the world;

now

I am leaving the world

and going back to

the Father.”

Then
Jesus’ disciples said,

“Now
you are speaking clearly
and without figures of speech.

30

Now
we can see that
you know all things

and that
you do not even need
to have anyone ask you
questions.

This makes us believe

that you came from God.”

31

“Do you now believe?”

Jesus replied.

“A time is coming
and in fact has come

when
you will be scattered,

each
to your own home.

You will leave me

all alone.

Yet

I am not alone,

for my Father is
with me.

“I have told you
these things,

so that in me

you may have peace.

In this world
you will have trouble.

But
take heart!

I have overcome

the world.”

John Chapter 15

The Vine and the Branches

1

“I am
the true vine,

and
my Father is
the gardener.

2 

He
cuts off
every branch in me

that
bears no fruit,

while
every branch
that does bear fruit

he prunes
so that it will be
even more fruitful.

3 

You are
already clean

because
of the word
I have spoken to you.

4 

Remain in me,

as
I also
remain in you.

No branch
can bear fruit by itself;

it must
remain in the vine.

Neither
can you bear fruit
unless you remain in me.

 “I am
the vine;

you are
the branches.

If you
remain in me

and
I in you,

you
will bear
much fruit;

apart
from me
you can do nothing.

If you do not
remain in me,

you are like
a branch

that is
thrown away
and withers;

such
branches are
picked up,

thrown
into the fire

and burned.

If you remain in me

and
my words
remain in you,

ask
whatever
you wish,

and
it will be done
for you.

This is to
my Father’s glory,

that
you bear much fruit,

showing
yourselves
to be my disciples.

the Father has
loved me,

remain

keep my commands,

My command is this:

Love each other

Greater love has no one

than this:

to lay down one’s life

for one’s friends.

You are my friends
if you do what I command.

call you servants,

a servant does not know

his master’s
business.

Instead,

I have called you
friends,

for
everything that
I learned from
my Father

I have made known to you.

You did not choose me,

but I chose you

and appointed you

so that
you might go

bear fruit—
fruit that will last—

so that

whatever you ask

in my name

the Father

will give you.

This is my command:

Love each other.

 

The World Hates the Disciples

18

 “If the world
hates you,

keep in mind

that
it hated me
first.

19 

If
you
belonged to
the world,

it would love you
as its own.

As it is,
you do not belong
to the world,

but
I have chosen you
out of the world.

That is why
the world hates you.

20 

Remember
what I told you:

‘A servant is not
greater than his master.’

If they
persecuted me,

they will
persecute you also.

If they
obeyed my teaching,

they will
obey yours also.

21 

They will
treat you this way

because
of my name,

for
they do not
know

the one
who sent me.

22 

If I had not
come and spoken
to them,

they would not be

guilty of sin;

but now
 they have no excuse

for their sin.

Whoever hates me
hates my Father
as well.

If I had not done
among them the works
no one else did,

they would not be

guilty of sin.

As it is,
they have seen,

and yet
they have hated

both me

and my Father.

But
this is to fulfill
what is written in their Law:

‘They hated me

without reason.’

 

The Work of the Holy Spirit

the Spirit of truth

testify about me.

불에 던져 사르느니라

너희가
내 안에 거하고

내 말이
너희 안에 거하면

무엇이든지
원하는 대로 구하라

그리하면 이루리라

너희가
열매를 많이 맺으면

내 아버지께서
영광을 받으실 것이요

너희는 내제자가 되리라

나를 사랑하신 것 같이

나도 너희를 사랑하였으니

나의 사랑 안에 거하라

아버지의 계명을
지켜

그의
사랑안에
거하는 것 같이

너희도
내 계명을지키면

내가 이것을
너희에게 이름은

내 기쁨이

충만하게 하려 함이라

내 계명은

곧
내가 너희를
사랑한 것 같이

서로 사랑하라 하는

이것이니라

사람이
친구를 위하여
자기 목숨을 버리면

이보다 더 큰
사랑이 없나니

너희는
내가 명하는 대로
행하면

곧 나의 친구라

이제부터는
너희를 종이라 하지
아니하리니

종은
주인이 하는 것을
알지 못함이라

너희를
친구라 하였노니

내가 내아버지께
들은 것을

다 너희에게

알게하였음이라

나를 택한 것이

너희를 택하여
세웠나니

이는
너희로 가서
열매를 맺게 하고

항상 있게 하여

너희에게 명함은

세상이 제자들을 미워하다

15:18

세상이
너희를 미워하면

너희보다 먼저
나를 미워한 줄을 알라

너희가
세상에 속하였으면

세상이
자기의 것을
사랑할 것이나

너희는
세상에속한 자가
아니요

도리어
내가 너희를

세상에서
택하였기 때문에

세상이
너희를 미워하느니라

내가 너희에게
종이 주인보다 더 크지못하다
한 말을 기억하라

사람들이
나를 박해하였은즉

너희도
박해할 것이요

내 말을 지켰은즉
너희 말도 지킬 것이라

15:21

그러나 사람들이
내 이름으로 말미암아
이 모든 일을 너희에게 하리니

이는
나를 보내신 이를
알지 못함이라

15:22

내가 와서 그들에게
말하지 아니하였더라면

죄가
없었으려니와

지금은
그 죄를 핑계할 수
없느니라

15:23

나를 미워하는 자는
또 내 아버지를 미워하느니라

15:24

내가
아무도 못한 일을
그들 중에서 하지 아니하였더라면

그들에게
죄가 없었으려니와

지금은 그들이

나와 내 아버지를 보았고

또 미워하였도다

15:25

그러나 이는
그들의 율법에 기록된 바

그들이

이유 없이

나를 미워하였다 한말을

응하게 하려 함이라

 

그 거룩한 영이 하시는 일

아버지께로부터

너희에게 보낼

보혜사

곧
아버지께로부터
나오시는

진리의 성령이
오실 때에

그가 나를
증언하실 것이요

너희도 처음부터
나와 함께 있었으므로

증언하느니라
