2 Timothy 1:7-10

For

the Spirit God
gave us

does not
make us

timid,

gives us

power,

love

and

self-discipline.

do not be

ashamed of

the testimony

about our Lord

or
of me
his prisoner.
Rather,

join
with me
in suffering

for the gospel,

by

the power of

God.

그 사람

겨자 꽃이
노랗게 웃는

갈릴리의 마을을
걸을 때

허름한
옷을 입은
그 사람이

우렁차게
외치던 음성이

호수바람을
타고

내 귓가에
길게 울린다.

“심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니”

고즈넉한 여리고에
요단강 물소리가
여울질 때

허겁지겁 달려오며
애답게 호소하던

가엽게
끌어안으며
눈을 어루만져 낫게
하시던

그 사람이 눈앞에 어른거린다.

그물 깁는

확신에 찬

comforts

his people

will have

compassion

on his afflicted

아버지께 온 편지

아버지는 초등학교 교사셨다.

평생 교감이나 교장자리도 마다하고
아이들 앞에서 교편을 잡으셨다.

하루 종일 재잘대는 아이들과 함께 하는 것이
아버지에게는 더 없는 행복이었다.

정년퇴임을 하신 후,

아버지는 학생들이 그리운지
저녁이면 앨범을 펼쳐 들고

30년 전 처음 만났던 학생들 얘기부터
그리운 옛 이야기를 들려 주시곤 했다.

“이 아이는 정말 말썽꾸러기였지…
하루라도 안 싸울 날이 없었단다.

그래도 심성은 착하고 붙임성도 좋아서
나만 보면 떡볶이 사달라며 날마다 조르곤 했지….”

“유진이는 참 의젓하고 밝은 아이였다.
아프신 홀어머니와 힘들게 살면서도
늘 웃음을 잃지 않았지.

아프신 어머니 때문에
늘 의사가 되겠다고 말하곤 했었단다.

내가 가끔 집에 찾아가서 유진이 몰래
고기며 쌀이며 사다 놓곤 했었는데…”

줄줄이 이어지는 추억담은
늘 우리 자식들 마음을 촉촉이 적시곤 했다.

그러던 어느 날,
아침 산책을 다녀오시던 아버지가 쓰러졌다.
폐암 말기…

“한 평생 칠판에다
쓰고 닦고 하시더니 폐암이 되셨구나.”

희망이 없다는
의사들의 말을 뒤로 하고

우리는 아버지를 집으로 모셔와
할 수 있는 치료를 계속했다.

종종 아버지 제자들이
소식을 듣고 찾아오곤 했다.

그럼 아버진 또 한참을
옛 추억에 잠겨 이야기를 나눴다.

그때 만큼은
아버지 얼굴에도 생기가 돌았다.

그러나 아버지 병세는
날이 갈수록 나빠졌다.

기침 때문에
잠을 못 이루시는 날들이 잦아지고,
가래 끓는 소리도 거칠어졌다.

마침내
대화를 나주지 못할 정도로
병세가 나빠졌다.

그때 마침,

진료 받던 병원에서
의사 한 명을 보내주었다.

20대 후반의 여의사였는데,
가래가 끌면 젖은 가재로 손가락을 넣어
가래를 꺼내주곤 하면서

가족 만큼이나
지극정성으로 보살펴 주었다.

여의사가 오는 날이면
아버지도 유난히 표정이 밝아졌다.

자식들도 감히 못하는 일을
젊은 여의사가 하고 있었다.

그렇게 시간이 지나자,
가래 끓는 소리가 잠잠해지고
아버지 얼굴에 화색이 돌았다.

몇 달 후,
아버지는 세상을 떠났다.

장례를 치르고,
나는 고맙다는 인사를 하기 위해
병원을 찾았다.

그런데,

“네??…
의사 보내드린 적 없는데요?”

“분명히
병원에서 왔다고 했는데요?”

“의사 분
성함이 어떻게 되나요?”

“… …”

“아무튼 저희 쪽에서는
의사를 보내드린 적이 없습니다.”

여의사의
이름도 몰랐던 나는
헛걸음만 한 채 아쉬운 발걸음을
돌려야했다.

얼마 후,
외국에서 한 통의 편지가
날아왔다.

돌아가신
아버지께 온 편지였다.

“선생님, 저 유진이에요.
선생님이 참 예뻐해 주시던 유진이…,

가끔 저희 집에
쌀이며 반찬이며 놓고 가셨던 거
저 다 알고 있었어요.

그때는 자존심이 상해서
차마 고맙다는 말씀도 드리지
못했지만…

그 못난 제자가 의사가 됐어요.

이 소식을 알면
제일 기뻐하실 선생님을
수소문해 찾았을 때,

많이 아프시다는 걸
알았어요.

침상에 누워 계신
선생님을 뵈었을 때

의사가운을 입은 저를 보며
비록 말은 못하셨지만

‘어서 오렴’하고

반겨 주시듯
제 손을 꼭 잡아주신 선생님…

저 알아보신 거 맞죠?

언젠가
제 꿈이 의사라고 하자,

선생님은
‘유진이는 사람의 몸 뿐만 아니라
마음까지 고쳐주는

훌륭한
의사가 될 거야’ 하셨죠.
그 말씀 지키려고요…

이곳,
아프리카 오지에서
환자들의 몸 뿐만 아니라

마음도
치유해주는 의사가 되고 싶어요.

선생님도
저를 위해 기도해 주실 거죠?

사랑합니다, 선생님.”

나는 머나먼 아프리카에서 날아온
그 여의사의 편지를 아버지 묘소에
고이 놓아드렸다.
