Johannes Brahms was 20 years old when, in 1853, he first made the acquaintance of Robert Schumann through a letter of recommendation provided by the famous violinist Joseph Joachim.
It was Schumann’s unabashed praise of the music that Brahms showed him that, more than anything else, provided the young composer with the courage necessary to begin work on a full-scale symphony the next year.
That courage, however, fell short in the end — Brahms felt himself too inexperienced and was too haunted by the“footsteps of a giant” (Beethoven) to begin fruitful symphonic work — and Brahms reorganized the material he had written as a sonata for two pianos. By 1858, this sonata for two pianos had itself been reborn as the Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15.

My name is Kim Nam Jun, also known as RM, the leader of group the BTS.
(저는 BTS라는 그룹의 리더, RM 김남준입니다.)
It is an incredible honor to be invited at an occasion with such a significance for today’s young generation.
(이 시대 젊은 세대들에게 중요한 이 자리에 참석하게되어 큰 영광입니다.)
Last November, BTS launched the “Love Myself” campaign with UNICEF, building on our belief that true love first begins with loving myself.
(지난 11월, BTS는 진정한 사랑은 자신을 사랑하는 것에서 부터 시작된다는 우리의 믿음을 토대로 유니세프와 “Love Myself” 캠페인을 시작했습니다.)
We have been partnering with UNICEF’s #ENDviolence program to protect children and young people all over the world from violence.
(우리는 전세계의 아이들과 청소녀들을 폭력에서 보호하기 위한 유니세프의 #ENDviolence 프로그램에 함께 참여하고 있습니다.)
And our fans have become a major part of this campaign with their action and with their enthusiasm.
(그리고 저희 팬들의 실천과 열정은 이 캠페인의 중요한 한 축이 되었습니다.)
We truly have the best fans in the world.

I would like to begin by talking about myself.
(제 이야기로 먼저 시작해 보겠습니다.)
I was born in Ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea.
(저는 한국, 서울 근처의 일산에서 태어났습니다.)
It’s a beautiful place, with a lake, hills, and even an annual flower festival.
(호수와 작은 산들 그리고 꽃 축제가 열리는 아름다운 곳이죠.)
I spent a happy childhood there, and I was just an ordinary boy.
(저는 이곳에서 행복한 유년시절을 냈습니다. 그냥 평범한 아이였죠.)
I used to look up at the night sky in wonder and I used to dream the dreams of a boy.
(밤 하늘을 쳐다보며 경이로워하며 여느 아이들이 꾸는 그런 꿈을 꿨습니다.)
I used to imagine that I was a superhero, who could save the world.
(제가 슈퍼히어로가 되어 세상을 구하는 걸 상상하곤 했죠.)
And in an intro to one of our early albums, there is a line that says, “My heart stopped when I was maybe nine or ten.”
(저희 초기 앨범 인트로에 “내 심장은 아홉살, 열살쯤 멈췄다.” 란 가사가 있습니다.)
Looking back, I think that’s when I began to worry about what other people thought of me and started seeing myself through their eyes.
(돌이켜보면, 그때가 제가 남들이 날 어떻게 생각할까 걱정하기 시작하고 다른 사람의 눈으로 나를 보기 사작한 때인것 같습니다.)
I stopped looking up at the night skies, the stars.
(저는 밤하늘과 별을 올려다 보지 않게 됐습니다.)
I stopped daydreaming.
(꿈을 꾸는 것도 하지 않게 됐죠.)
Instead I just tried to jam myself into molds that other people made.
(대신 다른 사람들이 만들어 놓은 틀에 제 자신을 밀어 넣으려 했습니다.)
Soon, I began to shut out my own voice and started to listen to the voices of others.
(그렇게 저는 제 목소리를 닫고, 다른 사람들의 말만 듣기 시작했습니다.)
No one called out my name, and neither did I.
(아무도 제 이름을 불러주지 않았고, 저 조차도 그랬죠.)
My heart stopped and my eyes closed shut.
(제 심장은 멈췄고 제 눈은 닫혔습니다.)
So, like this, I, we, all lost our names.
(이렇게 저는 아니 우리 모두는 자신의 이름을 이름을 잃어버렸습니다.)
We became like ghosts.
(유령이나 마찬가지였죠.)
But I had one sanctuary, and that was music.
(하지만 제게는 음악이라는 탈출구가 있었습니다.)
There was a small voice inside of me that said, “Wake up, man, and listen to yourself!”
(제 안에서 “깨어나서 너의 소리를 들어!” 라는 작은 소리가 들렸습니다.)
But it took me a long time to hear music calling my name.
(하지만 음악이 저의 이름을 불러주기까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다.)
Even after making the decision to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles.
(BTS에 들어오고 나서도 시련이 많았었죠.)
Some people might not believe but most people thought we were hopeless.
(믿지 않을 수도 있겠지만 다들 저희에게 희망이 없다고 했습니다.)
Sometimes, I just wanted to quit.
(그만두고 싶을 때도 있었습니다.)
I think I was very lucky that I didn’t give it all up.
(그때 포기 하지 않았던 것이 너무 다행이라 생각합니다.)
And I’m sure that I, and we, will keep stumbling and falling like this.
(저와 우리 모두는 앞으로도 이렇게 고난과 아픔을 겪으면서 살아갈껍니다.)
BTS has become artists performing in those huge stadiums and selling millions of albums right now.
(BTS는 이제 큰 공연장에서 공연을 하고 수 백만장의 앨범이 팔리는 가수가 되었습니다.)
But I am still an ordinary, twenty-four-year-old guy.
(하지만 저는 여전히 24살의 평범한 청년입니다.)
If there’s anything that I’ve achieved, it was only possible that I have my other BTS members, right by my side, and because of the love and support that our ARMY fans all over the world made for us.
(제가 이룬 것이 있다면, 제 옆에 있는 BTS 멤버들이 있었기에 가능한 것이었고, 오늘날 저희를 있게 해준 전세계 ARMY들의 사랑과 응원 덕분이었습니다.)
And maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me.
(예전에 실수하던 저도 여전히 저입니다.)
Today I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes.
(지금도 잘못을 하고 실수를 하지만 그게 저입니다.)
Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that would be me, too.
(앞으로 좀 더 현명지겠지만 그 또한 저 일테죠.)
These faults and mistakes are what I am making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life.
(이런 잘못과 실수들이 제 삶의 별자리에 수놓을 별들을 만들어 줄 겁니다.)
I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.
(저는 지금의 저와, 과거의 저 그리고 앞으로 희망하는 저의 모습까지 사랑하게 되었습니다.)
I’d like to say the one last thing.
(마지막으로 한가지 드리고 싶은 말이 있습니다.)
After releasing our “Love Yourself” albums and launching the “Love Myself” campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world, how our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves.
(“Love Yourself” 앨범을 내고 “Love Myself” 캠페인을 시작한 후, 우린 전 세계 팬들로 부터 놀라운 이야기를 듣기 시작했습니다. 우리의 메시지로 어떻게 그들이 인생의 난관을 이겨내고 스스로를 사랑하게 되었는지에 대해서 말이죠.)
These stories constantly remind us of our responsibility.
(이런 이야기들은 저희에게 끝없는 책임감을 들게 합니다.)
So, let’s take all one more step.

Like most people, I’ve made many, plenty of mistakes in my life.

I have many faults and I have many more fears, but I am going to embrace myself as hard as I can, and I’m starting to love myself gradually, just little by little.
