Called To Be Free

13

You, my brothers
and sisters, were called
to be free.

But

do not use

your freedom

to indulge

the flesh;

rather,

serve one another

humbly

in love.

14

For

the entire law

is

fulfilled

in keeping this

one command:

“Love your neighbor

as yourself.”

15

If you bite

and devour

each other,

watch out

or you will be destroyed

by each other.

16

So I say,

walk by the Spirit,

and you will not gratify

the desires of

the flesh.

17

For
the flesh desires
what is contrary to
the Spirit,

and the Spirit
what is contrary to
the flesh.

They are in conflict
with each other,

so that
you are not to do
whatever you want.

18

But
if you are led by
the Spirit,

you are not
under the law.

19

The acts of the flesh
are obvious:

sexual immorality,

impurity

and

debauchery;

20

idolatry

and witchcraft;

hatred,

discord,

jealousy,

fits of rage,

selfish ambition,

dissensions,

factions

21

and envy;

drunkenness,

orgies,

and the like.

I warn you,
as I did before,

that
those who
live like this

will not

inherit

the kingdom of

God.

22

But
the fruit of
the Spirit
is

love,

joy,

peace,

forbearance,

kindness,

goodness,

faithfulness,

23

gentleness

and self-control.

Against such things
there is no law.

24

Those who

belong to Christ Jesus

have crucified

the flesh

with its passions

and desires.

25

Since

we live by the Spirit,

let us keep in step

with the Spirit.

26

Let us not

become

conceited,

provoking

and envying

each other.

rebukes

thrive,

the people
rejoice;

the wicked

groan.

A man
who loves
wisdom

brings

joy

to his father,

but
a companion of
prostitutes

squanders
his wealth.

justice

a king

gives

a country

stability,

  but

those

who are greedy

for bribes

tear it down.

Those who
flatter their
neighbors

   are
spreading nets
for their
feet.

Evildoers
are snared by
their own
sin,

the righteous

shout for joy

righteous

care about

the wicked

such concern.

Mockers

A Deceiving Spirit

Micaiah
continued,

“Therefore

hear
the word of
the Lord:

I saw
the Lord sitting on
his throne

with
all the multitudes of
heaven

standing
around him
on his right and
on his left.

And

the Lord said,

‘Who will
entice Ahab into
attacking Ramoth
Gilead

and
going to
his death
there?’

“One
suggested
this, and another
that.

Finally,

a spirit came
forward,

stood
before
the Lord

and
said,
‘I will entice
him.’

“‘By what means?’
the Lord
asked.

“‘I will
go out and

be
a deceiving
spirit

in
the mouths of
all his prophets,’
he said.

“‘You will
succeed in
enticing him,’

said
the Lord.

‘Go and do it.’

“So now
the Lord has
put

a deceiving spirit
in the mouths
of

all
these prophets
of yours.

The Lord
has decreed
disaster for
you.”

Then

Zedekiah
son of Kenaanah
went up

and
slapped
Micaiah
in the face.

“Which way
did the spirit from
the Lord go

when
he went from me
to speak to you?”
he asked.

Micaiah replied,

“You
will find out
on the day you go
to hide

in
an inner
room.”

The king of Israel
then ordered,

“Take
Micaiah

and
send him
back to Amon
the ruler of
the city

and
to Joash
the king’s son
and say,

‘This is
what the king says:

Put
this fellow
in prison

and
give him
nothing but
bread and water

until
I return safely.’”

Micaiah declared,

“If
you ever
return safely,

the Lord
has not spoken
through
me.”

Then he added,

“Mark
my words,
all you people!”

Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead

So

the king of Israel
and Jehoshaphat
king of Judah

went up to
Ramoth Gilead.

The king of Israel
said to Jehoshaphat,

“I will
enter the battle
in disguise,

but
you wear
your royal robes.”

So
the king of Israel
disguised himself

and
went into battle.

Now

the
king of Aram
had ordered

his
thirty-two chariot
commanders,

“Do not fight
with anyone,
small or great,

except
the king of Israel.”

When
the chariot
commanders saw
Jehoshaphat,

they thought,
“Surely this is
the king of Israel.”

So they
turned to
attack him,

but
when Jehoshaphat
cried out,

the
chariot
commanders
saw that he was not
the king of Israel

and
stopped
pursuing him.

But
someone drew
his bow at random

and
hit the king of
Israel between
the sections of
his armor.

The king told
his chariot
driver,

“Wheel around
and get me out of
the fighting.

I’ve been wounded.”

All day long
the battle raged,

and

the
king was
propped up
in his chariot

facing the Arameans.

The blood
from his wound
ran onto the floor
of the chariot,

and
that evening

he died.

the sun was s
etting,

a cry
spread through
the army:

“Every man to
his town.

his land!”

So

the king died
and was brought to
Samaria,

and they
buried him
there.

They washed
the chariot at a pool
in Samaria

the prostitutes

his blood,

1 John Chapter 3

See
what great love
the Father has lavished
on us,

that
we should be called
children of God!

that is what we are!

The reason
the world does not
know us

is
that
it did not know
him.

Dear friends,
now we are
children of God,

and
what we will be
has not yet been
made known.

But
we know that
when Christ appears,

we
shall be like
him,

for
we shall see him
as he is.

All
who have
this hope in him

purify

themselves,

just as

he is pure.

Everyone

who sins

breaks the law;

in fact,

sin is
lawlessness.

you know that
he appeared so that

take away our sins.

Dear children,

how we know
who the children of
God are

and
who the children of
the devil are:

Anyone

who does not do

what is right

is not

God’s child,

is anyone

does not love
their brother and
sister.

Dear children,

let us not love
with words
or speech

with actions

in truth.

This is
how we know
that

we belong
to the truth

and
how we set
our hearts at rest
in his presence:

our hearts
condemn us,

we
know that

God
is greater than
our hearts,

and
he knows
everything.

Dear friends,

if
our hearts
do not condemn
us,

we
have
confidence
before God

receive from
him

anything

we ask,

because

we
keep
his commands

and

what pleases

The Blessed

Blessed
is

the man

who
does not
walk in the
counsel

wicked

The Promise, With Hope

remember
that

at that time
you were separate
from

Christ,

excluded
from citizenship
in Israel

and
foreigners to
the covenants of
the promise,

without hope
and without God
in the world.

But now

in
Christ Jesus
you who once were
far away

have been
brought near by
the blood of
Christ.

 For
he himself
is

our peace,

who
has made
the two groups

one
and has destroyed
the barrier,

the dividing wall of
hostility,

15

by
setting aside
in his flesh

the law
with its commands
and regulations.

His
purpose was
to create in
himself

one new
humanity out
of the two,

thus making peace,

16

and
in one body
to reconcile both
of them to God

through
the cross,

by
which
he put to death
their hostility.

17

He came and
preached peace
to you

who were
far away

and
peace  to those
who were
near.

18

For through him
we both have access
to the Father

by
one Spirit.

Consequently,

you are no longer
foreigners and
strangers,

but
fellow citizens
with God’s
people

and also
members of his
household,

built on
the foundation
of the apostles and
prophets,

with
Christ Jesus
himself

as
the chief
cornerstone.

joined together

to become a holy
temple

Fight the Good Fight

If
anyone
teaches
otherwise

and
does not
agree

to
*the sound
instruction of
our Lord

Jesus Christ

to *godly
teaching,

conceited

and
understand
nothing.

They have
an unhealthy
interest

in
controversies

and
quarrels about
words

that result

in envy,

strife,

malicious talk,

evil suspicions

and

constant
friction

between
people of corrupt
mind,

who have been

robbed of

the truth

and
who think

that

*godliness
is a means to
financial
gain.

But
*godliness with
contentment is
great gain.

For
we brought
nothing

into
the world,

and

we can
take nothing
out of it.

But

if
we have
food

and
clothing,

we will be
content with
that.

Those who
want to get
rich

fall
into
temptation

and a trap

and into many
foolish

and harmful
desires

that
plunge people
into ruin

destruction.

money

eager for
money,
