postpone games as players protest Jacob Blake shooting

KISSIMMEE, Fla. —

The NBA’s restart inside a restricted bubble at Disney World, which has proceeded smoothly for more than a month without any positive novel coronavirus tests, came to a screeching halt Wednesday when the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court for a playoff game against the Orlando

Magic to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis. The league announced the cancellation of all three games scheduled for Wednesday as a result, and a meeting of NBA players later Wednesday night cast doubt on whether the postseason would continue at all.

The unprecedented decision to postpone the games was quickly followed by a similar decision by the WNBA, which postponed three scheduled games across the state in Bradenton, and by teams and players in numerous other professional sports.
In Milwaukee, the Brewers announced they would not play their Major League Baseball game Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Reds. The Seattle Mariners’ game against the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the San Francisco Giants also were postponed.

Praying it’s not permanent’: Jacob Blake is paralyzed from waist down after he was shot by Kenosha police

A 29-year-old Black man who was shot in the back by Kenosha police is paralyzed from the waist down, his family’s attorney confirmed Tuesday.

“Jacob Blake currently paralyzed from the waist down. Praying it’s not permanent,” Attorney Benjamin Crump tweeted.
The nationally-known civil rights attorney is expected to meet with Blake’s family Tuesday and provide more information during a news conference this afternoon in Kenosha.
Blake was shot Sunday evening as he attempted to get into a small SUV with his three sons, ages 8, 5, and 3, inside, according to video and a statement from Crump.

A bystander’s video of the shooting quickly spread on social media. It appeared to show the officer grab Blake by the back of his shirt as he tried to get into a small SUV, then shoot him seven times at point-blank range. In the video, Blake did not appear to have anything in his hands.
