The Arrogant

The Arrogant

For
you
are not
a God

who is
pleased with
wickedness;

with you,

evil people
are not
welcome.

The arrogant
cannot stand
in your presence.

You
hate all
who do
wrong;

you
destroy
those who
tell lies.

The bloodthirsty
and deceitful

you,
Lord,

detest.

Psalm 5: 4-6

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

Then
you will
know the truth,

and
the truth will
set you
free.”

So
if the Son
sets you
free,

you
will be
free

indeed.

Humanism,

Humanism

Many wanted to recognise human values,
but without depending on dogmatic religion
as the main source of values.

Views held by many humanists include:

1. Humans deserve respect.

2. Every human should be treated with respect

3. And allowed to have dignity.

4. If all people act with respect for others,
then people will live in peace and trust.

5. People should all be able to decide
how they want to live their lives.

6. They should use reasoning
to make decisions and solve problems.

7. Humanists decide what choices are
good by whether those choices will
help make human life better and
the world around them.

Course

Humanism
Art Appreciation,
Music Appreciation, Film,

Humanism

Humanism
philosophical school of thought
emphasizing the value of human beings
and focusing on rationalism and empiricism

Humanism is a philosophy or
a way of thinking about the world.

Humanism is a set of ethics or ideas
about how people should live and act.

People who hold this set
of ethics are called humanists.

Humanists prefer critical thinking
and evidence (rationalism and empiricism)
over acceptance of dogma or superstition.

In modern times, humanism is
close to secularism. It refers to
a non-theistic approach to life,
looking to science instead of
religious dogma in order to
understand the world.

The term was made widely known by
scientists in the mid-20th century.

Many wanted to recognise human values,
but without depending on religion
as the main source of values.

Views held by many humanists include:

Humans deserve respect.
Every human should be treated with respect
and allowed to have dignity.
If all people act with respect for others,
then people will live in peace and trust.
People should all be able to decide
how they want to live their lives.
They should use reasoning
to make decisions and solve problems.

Humanists decide what choices are
good by whether those choices will help
make human life better and
the world around them.

History

The writings of the ancient Greeks were studied in the 1400s during the Renaissance when Roman Catholic was extremely corrupted, However, in this period the term “humanism” came to mean educated in the humanities, a rather different kind of idea. Petrarch is often cited as the first modern humanist, but he pointed backwards to classical authors.

The modern meaning of humanism is
more to do with using science to make
the world a better place.

A comment by the English mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead in 1925 was “The prophecy of Francis Bacon has now been fulfilled; and man, who at times dreamt of himself as a little lower than the angels, has submitted to become the servant and the minister of nature. It still remains to be seen whether the same actor can play both parts”.

TO SAVE THE WORLD

TO SAVE THE WORLD

For
God
so loved
the world

that
he gave his
one and only
Son,

that
whoever
believes in
him

shall
not
perish

but
have eternal
life.

For

God
did not
send his Son into
the world to condemn
the world,

but
to save
the world

through
him.

John 3: 16-17

May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement

(Hangul: 5·18 광주 민주화 운동;
an uprising of Gwangju’s citizens in the city of
Gwangju in South Korea, from May 18
to 27, 1980. Estimates suggest
that up to 606 people may have died.

During this period, Gwangju citizens
took up arms (by robbing local armories and police stations) when local Chonnam University students who were demonstrating against the martial law government were fired upon, killed, raped and beaten by government troops. The uprising ended on May 27, 1980. The event is sometimes called 5·18 (May 18; Hangul: 오일팔; Hanja: ; RR: Oilpal), in reference to the date the movement began.

Support or denial of the Gwangju Uprising has long acted as a litmus test between conservative and far right groups and beliefs, and mainstream and progressive sectors of the population. The far right groups have sought to discredit the uprising. One of such arguments point to the fact that it occurred before Chun Doo-hwan officially took office, and so contend that it could not really have been a simple student protest against him that started it; however, Chun Doo-hwan had become the de facto leader of South Korea at that time since coming into power on December 12, 1979, after leading a successful military coup of the previous South Korean government.

During Chun Doo-hwan’s presidency, the authorities defined the incident as a rebellion instigated by Communist sympathizers and rioters.

By 1997, a national cemetery and day of commemoration (May 18), along with acts to “compensate, and restore honor” to victims, were established.

In 2011, 1980 Archives for the May 18th Democratic Uprising against Military Regime located in Gwangju’s city hall were inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
