A Spring Day

image

A Spring Day

It was a spring day
with magnolias in full bloom.

Noor Fuad, 30 years old,
an illegal immigrant laborer
from Indonesia,
was spending rare
leisure time
with his wife Leena on the third floor
of the dormitory
of a factory in Incheon.

It was a morning
when the magnolias
were in full bloom.

With loud stomping,
immigration officers suddenly
rushed
into the building and,
without any words,
started to handcuff
their wrists.

He pleaded to be unshackled
for a minute in order to change his clothes.

And in that brief moment,
Fuad jumped through a window
to the rooftop of an adjacent building

,
but he lost his footing
and fell to the ground.

It was a bright spring morning
when the magnolias
were in full bloom.

Peace I Leave

Peace I Leave

But the Counselor,
the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father
will send in my name,
will teach you all things
and will remind you
of everything
I have said to you.

Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled
and do not be afraid.
John 14: 26-27

image
Art by Sohn, Jin Gul

Renting a Room

Renting a Room

by Ra Hee-duk

I wanted to rent a room
somewhere in Damyang or Pyongchang,
to scurry in and out like a squirrel.
Every time I saw a quiet village,
I peeped into it.

Passing by a house in JishilVillage,
I saw a yard with ordinary flowers
blooming
between an old traditional house
and a newly built annex.

Without knowing myself,
I stepped into the open doors.
The ajeossi* was sharpening
a scythe on the whetstone.
The ajumoni’s** kerchief was wet
as if she just returned from the field.

“Uh, I would like to rent a room here.
I am looking for a space
where I can come
a few days a week to work.”

I carefully gestured
toward the old house,
and the ajumoni responded with a smile.

“Well, the kids all left forSeoul,
an’ the house’s empty,
‘cause we live in the annex.
But our Yi’s family history is livin’ within,
so we’re still usin’ it with our hearts.”

Upon hearing these words
I could see the clean floor
and the evening sunlight settling on it.
I simply turned around
without further asking to rent.

Would the couple know
that I had already rented the room
when she told me their hearts
still occupy that empty house?

The Resurrection and The Life

The Resurrection and The Life

Jesus said to her,
“I am the resurrection and the life.
He who believes in me will live,
even though he dies;

and whoever lives and believes in me
will never die. Do you believe this?”

“Yes, Lord,” she told him,
“I believe that you are the Christ,
the Son of God,
who was to come into the world.”
John 11: 25-27

The Word of the Wind

Oriental Painting by Kim, Dong Sung

The Word of the Wind

by Mah Jonggi (1939-)

After all of us leave,
if my spirit passes by you,
don’t think even for a moment
it is
the wind that sways the spring boughs.

Today I will plant a flower
on a corner of the shadow
where I got to know you;

when the flower grows to bloom,
all the distress that stemmed
from our acquaintance
will turn into petals and fly away.

It will turn into petals
and fly away.
Though it is unbearably
distant
and futile,

how can we measure
all the things in the world
with only a small ruler?

When every now and then
you turn your ears toward
where the wind blows,

my beloved,
don’t forget even if you become tired
the word of the wind
that comes from far away.
