Led by The Spirit,

You, my brothers
and sisters, were called
to be free.

But

do not use

your freedom

to indulge

the flesh;

rather,

serve one another

humbly

in love.

14

For

the entire law

is

fulfilled

in keeping this

one command:

“Love your neighbor

as yourself.”

15

If you bite

and devour

each other,

watch out

or you will be destroyed

by each other.

16

So I say,

walk by the Spirit,

and you will not gratify

the desires of

the flesh.

17

For
the flesh desires
what is contrary to
the Spirit,

and the Spirit
what is contrary to
the flesh.

They are in conflict
with each other,

so that
you are not to do
whatever you want.

18

But
if you are led by
the Spirit,

you are not
under the law.

19

The acts of the flesh
are obvious:

sexual immorality,

impurity

and

debauchery;

20

idolatry

and witchcraft;

hatred,

discord,

jealousy,

fits of rage,

selfish ambition,

dissensions,

factions

21

and envy;

drunkenness,

orgies,

and the like.

I warn you,
as I did before,

that
those who
live like this

will not

inherit

the kingdom of

God.

22

But
the fruit of
the Spirit
is

love,

joy,

peace,

forbearance,

kindness,

goodness,

faithfulness,

23

gentleness

and self-control.

Against such things
there is no law.

24

Those who

belong to Christ Jesus

have crucified

the flesh

with its passions

and desires.

25

Since

we live by the Spirit,

let us keep in step

with the Spirit.

26

 

Let us not

become

conceited,

provoking

and envying

each other.

That Which Defiles

Matthew 15:1-20

Then
some Pharisees
and teachers of
the law

came to Jesus

from
Jerusalem

and asked,

“Why
do your disciples
break the tradition of
the elders?

They don’t wash
their hands before
they eat!”

 Jesus replied,

“And why do you
break the command
of God

for
the sake of your
tradition?

4

For God said,

‘Honor
your father
and mother’

and
‘Anyone
who curses their
father or mother
is to be put
to death.’

5

But
you say that
if anyone declares
that

what
might have been
used to help

their
father or mother
is

‘devoted
to God,’

6

 they are not
to ‘honor their father
or mother’ with it.

Thus
you nullify
the word of God
for the sake of your
tradition.

You hypocrites!

Isaiah was right
when he prophesied
about you:

“‘These people
honor me with
their lips,

 but
their hearts are
far from
me.

9

They
worship me
in vain;

   their
teachings are
merely human
rules.’”

10

Jesus
called the crowd
to him and said,

“Listen
and understand.

11

 What
goes into
someone’s mouth
does not defile them,

but
what comes out
of their mouth,
that is what defiles
them.”

Then
the disciples
came to him
and asked,

“Do
you know that
the Pharisees were
offended

when
they heard
this?”

He
replied,

“Every plant
that my heavenly Father
has not planted

will be
pulled up
by the roots.

Leave them;
they are blind
guides.

fall into a pit.”

“Don’t you see
that whatever enters

The Good News

When
the men
