The Parable of the Persistent Widow

1

Then
Jesus told
his disciples
a parable to show
them

that
they should
always pray

and
not give up.

2

He said:
“In a certain town
there was
a judge

who
neither feared
God

nor
cared what people
thought.

3

And
there was a widow
in that town

who
kept coming
to him with
the plea,

‘Grant me justice

against

my adversary.’

4

“For some time
he refused.

But
finally he said
to himself,

‘Even though
I don’t fear
God

or
care what people
think,

5

yet

because
this widow keeps
bothering
me,

I will see that
she gets
justice,

so that

she won’t
eventually come
and attack
me!’”

6

And
the Lord said,

“Listen to
what the unjust
judge
says.

7

And
will not God
bring about
justice

for his
chosen ones,

who
cry out to
him

day and night?

Will
he keep
putting them
off?

8

I
tell you,

he
will
see that

they get justice,

and quickly.

However,

when
the Son of Man
comes,

will he
find faith
on the earth?”

그 밤낮 부르짖는
택하신 자들의
원한을

풀어 주지
아니하시겠느냐

그들에게
오래 참으시겠느냐

내가 너희에게
이르노니

속히
그 원한을 풀어
주시리라

그러나
인자가 올 때에

세상에서
믿음을 보겠느냐
하시니라

Leaving that place,

Jesus
withdrew
to the region of Tyre
and Sidon.

22

A Canaanite woman
from that vicinity
came to him,

crying out,
“Lord, Son of David,

have mercy
on me!

My daughter
is demon-possessed
and suffering
terribly.”

23

 Jesus
did not answer
a word.

So
his disciples
came to
him

and urged him,

“Send
her away,

 for she keeps
crying out
after us.”

24

 He answered,

“I was sent
only to the lost sheep
of Israel.”

25

 The woman
came and knelt
before him.

“Lord,

help me!”

she said.

26

He replied,

“It is not right
to take the children’s
bread

and
toss it
to the dogs.”

27

 “Yes it is, Lord,”
she said.

“Even
the dogs eat
the crumbs

that
fall from
their master’s
table.”

28

 Then

Jesus
said to her,

“Woman,

you have

great faith!

Your request

is granted.”

And
her daughter
was healed

at that
moment.
